I do not condemn people to hell now and never will.  I don't get offended when people say that god does not exist becuase that is their opinion.  There is no proof of a god and no proof that their isn't a god.  To each his own.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Calvinism
« on: October 04, 2007, 05:25:45 PM »
I'm a Presbyterian which a section of the branch of Calvinism.  I just have a couple questions and my ideas on them if anyone wants to chime in.

Total debravity-Man is born with original sin casted down Adam and Eve.  This means that if you are not baptized for any reason you are going to hell because of the original sin.  I think this is ludicrous.  Sins are not passed down.

Predestination-The idea the God has chosen all who will be saved at the beginning of time.  I don't like to believe this because it takes away free will but knowing that God is all-knowing and all-powerful means he already knows what will happen.  This one is hard to argue against.

Limited Atonement-Belief that Christ only died for the elect few.  This is where I have the most trouble accepting Calvinism.  Granted in Matthew it says that many people will not see eternal life it also says in 1 John "and christ died for our sins(or says he is the propiation for...) but not just our sins but for the sins of the whole world.  So is Paul talking about the whole world or is it just a mediphor for the elect.  I personally believe it means everyone no matter what religion.

Please chime in and list your thoughts.

There will never be an answer for this.  In the bible it is all about actions and the opposites for those actions.  There is a heaven and a hell, a god and a satan, a believer and a none believer and so on.  I know these aren't great examples but I think you get my point.  So following this pattern you have to say that if works don't get you into heaven then works don't get you into hell.  Many probably don't agree with this but god gave us brains and expects us to use them as my pastor says.  I like to think that if you are a good person then you get into heaven but then the question comes up well how do you define a "good person"?  Many would say you have to be a christian to be a good person(not me).  Just think about it.  This means that Ghandi is going to hell and if had just believed in Jesus he would be saved.  Just change that one thing.  Personally I don't like to think of a loving God that way.  But that's my choice I guess.  YEAH FREE WILL!!!

Does this mean acts don't get you into hell?  If you accept Jesus as your lord and savior and are baptised does that give you the right to go and protest gay marriages, synagogues, Holocaust Memorials, soldiers funerals, or anything else like the WBC does?  By accepting Christ are they automatically going to heaven?  It can't be that good if they are.

Actually I'm pretty sure only Massachussetts allows gay marriage.  Other states allow civil partnerships but not marriage.  My point in posting this thread was just to state my opinion that churchs, even my church, cherry picks bible versuses to use against gay marriage.  A long time ago someone was sitting and decided to write a bunch of laws that they wanted to inact.  The bible is not god's word but mans word.

I was just wondering if the thousands of air force personal and commercail pilots are in on the conspiracy to.  Do they really know that the earth is flat and are just hiding it from everyone else?

Jesus said to Peter"I give you the keys to the Kingdom of god" then after hundreds of years someone comes around and says I found the keys and establishes the catholic church.

How is the church the power of god on earth?  Is it run by god... no.  In the bible is there a gospel according to god... no.  All of religion is based off of what certain people wanted at a certain time.  People corrupt the church not god.

My biggest problem is that I don't think people have the right to damn people to hell.  If I had the power I wouldn't just make all christians go to heaven.  I mean look at the WBC.  They believe in christ but are they going to heaven?  If they are and people like Ganhdi aren't I'm not sure I want to.

No religion is wrong to me(except scientology).  I am open to anything.  If you had never heard of christianity and a person walked up to you and said a child was born from a virgin, walked on water, was teh son of god, and died for our sins on a cross you would think he is kind of crazy.  There is no proof of a god or proof against a god.

The bible says that christ died for everyone, so how do you determine who goes to hell and what sins are unforgiveable?  He died for the sins of the world.. all of our sins.  So how can a sin be unforgiveable?  To get into heaven is the only qualification that you believe that christ was the son of God and he died for our sins?  In that case is Hitler in hell?  Is Pope Pius, the pope who didn't speak out against teh holocaust, in heaven?  Are all of those crusaders who killed in the name of teh lord in heaven?

So the Bible must be taken literally?  So you believe the earth is around 10,000 years old, because if you trace the bible back you get the creation somewhere around there.  Also in Genesis it says that God flooded the earth and only Noah and 7 others and teh animals he brought on the ark survived.  No one else.  Then in Leviticus it says that incest(having sex with family members) is sinful and punishable by death, but I thought we are all one family?  How is this possible?  Also the bible can't even tell us how humans where created.  It first says that God made man and women together then in Chapter 2 it says he made Adam then Eve.  I'm not trying to convert people or anything but I think to take the bible literally is absurd.

Flat Earth Debate / Re: Moon Landing was no fake!
« on: September 26, 2007, 07:58:22 PM »
So Bishop thinks that all the photos taken on the moon are fake, pictures of earth from space stations are faked, being able to measure distance from earth to the moon and concluding that it is 400,000 km away is a fake and it is all a fraud by teh gov't.  Wow Bishop get a life.

I know I'm new here but I have always wanted to ask this question.  I want 1 and only 1 absolute piece of evidence that states the earth is flat.  I don't someone (Bishop) to come in and say "well state one piece of evidence that the earth is round" because that's not what this forum is trying to prove.  Just one piece of concrete evidence please.  Thank you.

True but in Corinthians it says that if a women prays in church without a veil or hat on her hair should be shaved off.  My point is that most churchs tend to cherry pick verses from the bible, like the one against homosexuality, but tend to leave ones like the one above alone.  I think, and this is just me, you either have to take all the bible and all of its verses as fact or you have to think of it as a metophor which I do.  I don't think it is right to have both.

I really don't get it at all.  Most churchs do not allow gay marriage because they say that the bible renounds it and say it's a sin.  True there are verses that say gay marriage is wrong but there are other verses that say eating shrimp is wrong, wearing two types of cloth at the same time is wrong, not to mention it says love your neighboor as yourself not love your straight neighboor as yourself.  1 John says "and he is a propiation for our sins, but not for just our sins but for the sins of the whole world."  i guess most people tend to ignore these.

Who made up the idea of an ice wall?  Don't you think that that is a little absurd?  How could you keep that a secret.  That is just ridiculous.  All of the FE's theories are scientifically possible maybe but then this ice wall thing kind of ruins it for you.

First on the homepage you said that satellites don't exist and everything is just broadcasted from radio towers.  Then in this post you said that a satellite could see you before you got close enough to the ice wall.  So which one is it?

Flat Earth Debate / Question about gravity
« on: September 14, 2007, 03:46:36 PM »
I have a question for all of you FE's out there that I would love for one of you to answer.  You believe that since the Earth is flat it can not have gravity and gravity cannot exist because that means it has to have a center and be a sphere.  Instead you believe that earth is increasingly moving upward at a constant rate.  Now for my question.  If I am in a plane and I am going from NY to Paris and the plane levels off so it is parallel to the ground why doesn't the Earth acclerate and smash into the plane?  Is it accelerating to slow?  When a helicopter levels off at about 15ft in the air why doesn't the Earth catch up to it? Plz answer serioulsy.  Thank you
