Technology, Science & Alt Science / Knives & Multitools
« on: May 01, 2011, 12:28:36 PM »
It's not the kind of discussion I normally associate with this board, but it seems like the best place for it. Knives are technology!

I recently decided to invest in a Leatherman Wave to replace my ruined (my fault!) Victorinox multitool. However, I'm also considering picking up some kind of survival or hunting knife. As I'm looking for something that's no-frills and value for money, I think I'll be picking up a Mora No. 1, but I just wondered if FES has any other knife-nerds who want to wax lyrical about their awesome pocket tools or manly, bear-cleaving blades?

The Lounge / Decisions decisions...
« on: April 22, 2011, 06:06:26 AM »
I have been offered a place on Trinity College Dublin's M.Phil in Popular Literature, starting in the Autumn. This is pretty cool, as Trinity is one of the world's top university's (especially in the arts), and the course is seriously interesting. Here's a brief summary of the content:

http://www.tcd.ie/English/postgraduate/popular-literature/

However, there's also a strong chance that I'll be offered a place on University College Dublin's MA in Philosophy, though I won't know until the summer. UCD is not as good a university (though it still ranks quite well), but the MA in Philosophy is a really cool course - just as diverse and interesting as Trinity's M.Phil in Popular Literature in its own way. Here's a summary of its content:

http://www.ucd.ie/philosophy/graduateprogrammes/taughtmasters/mamodules/

Both courses sound fascinating, and I have every confidence that I can do well (i.e. get a distinction) in both. The problem is that if I go on to do a PhD and pursue an academic career (which I hope to do), my options will be in part determined by the masters I choose to enrole in this autumn. On the one hand, the M.Phil in Trinity would give me tonnes of scope to do pretty much any kind of Literature thesis I want to do for my doctorate, and teach pretty much anything in the field. On the other hand, the UCD course would give me serious academic credentials in Philosophy, meaning I could go on to do a Literature or Philosophy thesis, or even a mix of the two. The long and the short of it is that I don't know what I want to do. Both sound great, so it's a case of picking which feels great-est.

Now, I'm obviously not going to make my decision based solely on what you guys think. However, like internet addicts the world over, I am turning to you, the plebian masses of FES, to ask you what I should do with the rest of my life. Thoughts?

A particle accelerator in the US has shown compelling hints of a never-before-seen particle, researchers say . . . It could also signal a new fundamental force of nature, and the most radical change in physics for decades.

A new particle and a new fundamental force. Sounds like another brain-scratching moment for globularist science! Nevermind, I'm sure you'll jam it into the "standard model" somehow - you always do!

Flat Earth Believers / UK Skeptic Invitation
« on: April 06, 2011, 06:43:53 AM »
I've received an invitation to speak at a meeting of the Cheltenham Skeptics on behalf of the Flat Earth Society. As I live in Ireland and I'm currently saving for a return to college next year, I'm not really in a position to attaned, but I thought I should ask if anyone here would be interested. I'm thinking in particular of James, as he's based in the UK, but I forget where some of you are from and thought I should ask in here. They've offered to cover "cover petrol / reasonable expenses" and have promised a polite and friendly debate.

I'll also be contacting Daniel, but he's been pretty quiet of late, so I don't know what's likely to happen there. Anyway, let me know!

The Lounge / Operation Payback
« on: December 08, 2010, 08:35:02 AM »
So by now Operation Payback is headline news all over the world. Personally, I think it's protest and civil disobediance at its best. This society's motto is 'IN VERITATE VICTORIA' - in truth, victory. I believe WikiLeaks embodies the same values of truth and inquiry which this society seeks to promote, and for that reason I encourage other people to take part.

I genuinely think that anyone here who supports the above values shold get behind this protest. Whatever you may think of Julian Assange and the charges he faces, or the manner in which WikiLeaks has gone about releasing this information, I think the efforts to shut them down and cripple the organisation via state pressure and semi-legal or even illegal methods must be resisted. I know a lot of baggage comes with the 'Anonymous' banner, and you may not agree with all actions undertaken beneath that banner, but this surely is a cause which we can all support. Get behind it and do what you can. It doesn't even take that much effort.

Finally, I say all of this in a personal capacity.

Announcements / The Flat Earth Society now has over 200 official members!
« on: December 01, 2010, 12:09:49 PM »
It has recently come to my notice that the Flat Earth Society now has over 200 official members!

This means that since last year we've had an average of 4 new members a week. This is great news, and comes as we celebrate the 1st anniversary of the society's official relaunch. I think it shows that we are well on our way to raising membership to the levels seen prior to the death of Charles K. Johnson. Between this boom in membership, the press coverage we have received, and the new sense of energy within the Zetetic community, this has probably been the society's best year in a long, long time.

Our thanks go to everyone who has helped the Flat Earth Society or contributed to discussion of Flat Earth Theory over the years, whether FE'ers or RE'ers. None of this would be possible without you.

Flat Earth Believers / Potential Addition to FAQ
« on: November 22, 2010, 11:30:25 AM »
Thork and EnglshGentleman have sent me a possible additionto the FAQ. I thought I should put it up here and see what other Believers think of it, and if they have any suggestions or criticisms:

Quote
Aerospace and flying ...

Q: As a passenger on an aircraft, how is it I can see the curvature of the earth?

A: Quite simply you cannot. It is widely stated you would need to be at a height of at least 40,000 ft to get even a hint of curvature if earth were round. Commercial aircraft are not allowed to fly this high. They are only allowed to fly just under this altitude. 36,000ft might be typical.

Q: What about Concorde? That flew at 60,000 ft.

A: It did, but Concorde also had incredibly small windows as a design concession, to prevent passengers seeing enough of the horizon  and building up a picture of earth's shape for themselves. Only 6 inches across. As even that was deemed risky, Concorde has since been decommissioned.

Q: So what about flight times then? How can FEr's calculate times with the distorted map above?

A: Quite simply RErs can't do that either. There are two many variables. Performance is effected by fuel loads, ambient temperatures and pressures, engine models, the list goes on. Depending on what is happening with other traffic you might be in a hold, or routed out of your way to avoid other traffic or storms. The pilots do not fly direct to their destination either. Depending on the wind they might take off in the opposite direction to the intended route. They then fly SIDS (Standard Instrument Departures) onto a route, follow some beacons, get onto an Oceanic Highway on the way their, follow a STAR (STandard ARrival) on approach, and again go right round the back of an airport to land in the right direction. When pilots are following routes like the typical ones below, how can anyone make a simple straight line DST comparison to ascertain shape? Only the aircraft's Flight Management System really knows how far that trip is. The pilot just uses the data it provides. However FMS source code is closely guarded.

Below is a SID example. Note how the pilots fly curves and loops. They do not go direct.

Q: Well what about flying in the Southern 'Hemisphere'? Surely that would take much longer than times we have.

A: No. Pilots make use of jet-streams in both directions.
Quote
Jet streams are undulating bands of strong, high-altitude winds, associated with cold fronts. They have an average altitude of 10 km and may occasionally exceed 400 km/h. Pilots often seek out a jet stream to speed their jet planes along.
http://www.moriartey.ca/wd/wxfacts1.php

Q: What about balloon flights? I see lots of amateur videos on the internet of high altitude camera shots.

A: They do not show ball-like curvature. The horizon curves all the way around, but what do you expect? Look at the map in the geography section above. The earth is flat and round like a plate. It is this curvature you see. Not the earth falling away at the edges.

Q: How come the sun takes longer to set when flying west?

A: Again look at the FE map above. You are following the spotlight of the sun for longer, when you fly west.

Q: What about Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles? You said there was no space flight.

A: Correct. ICBMs fly just below what would be deemed space. Orbit is not possible.

Announcements / New rules and a new board!
« on: November 07, 2010, 05:25:17 PM »
Okay, so we all had a big happy chat about the rules a while back in true town-hall style. There were a few suggestions: some of them have been agreed on, others have not.

First of all, we've made the distinction in how different boards are moderated official. The boards are now divided into three categories, and each category is moderated differently. We've been doing things this way since that topic (perhaps even before), but now it's all there in black & white. Secondly, we've also put up the enforcement guidelines we use when enforcing the rules. They're just a rough guide, and there are always exceptions, but it'll give you some idea of how we actually make decisions about bans, warnings etc.

What didn't make the cut? Well, in the end we decided not to exempt Random Musings from the 'No profanity in thread titles' rule. Basically, a good few of the mods felt it would eventually lead to problems, and that for everyone's sake it was better if we left things as is. Having huge swear-words on the front page is kind of ugly and looks bad, even if guests can't see it.

The other 'big news' (stop the presses!) is that we have at long last created a board for technology discussions, namely Technology & Information. What's that? Are you okay? Sit down, please! You're feeling faint? I understand - this is a lot to take in at once. Things move thick and fast here at The Flat Earth Society.

But wait! I've saved the best for last. Hold on to your hats people, because I have edited the forum so that offcial usage of the terms 'forum' and 'board' is now totally consistent. Thrilling stuff huh? Of course I've probably missed a couple of topics and left typos everywhere, but progress is always incremental. At least now I can sleep at night without having to worry about inconsistent noun usage.

And that's basically it!

Your friendly neighbourhood Admin,

Okay, there are probably a load of threads in different places around the forum which now belong here. We don't need to get them all, but any decent & recent ones should probably be moved. If you know where they are, post links to them in here and I'll move them. I've already got a few, but I'm just not aware of most of them.

Flat Earth Believers / Flat Earth Believers - Rules & Guidelines
« on: November 07, 2010, 04:09:46 PM »
The Flat Earth Believers board is a place where FE'ers of all creeds, beliefs and theoretical standpoints can discuss ideas, subjects and issues related to Flat Earth Theory, the Flat Earth Society, and matters of Zetetic or socio-cultural significance. Access to the board is restricted to Believers because we feel it is important that FE'ers have a place to talk amongst themselves, without having to constantly explain and justify their beliefs to RE'ers. After all, there are several other boards which exist for that purpose.

Gaining access to the Believers' section is not easy. The Zetetic Council collectively decides who is given access to the Believers' board, and makes this decision based on your character, post history, and contributions to the Flat Earth Society and Flat Earth Theory. The members of the Zetetic Council are as follows:

Ichimaru Gin :]
James
John Davis
Lord Wilmore
Ski

If you wish to join, you can approach any member of the Council. Typically, a successful applicant will be a long-standing member who has made a substantial contribution to either Flat Earth Theory or discussion in the upper boards, and who is considered to sincerely believe that the Earth is flat. Note however that these are just guidelines, and that the Council members may vote as they wish. If your application is unsuccessful you will be informed, but no explanation shall be given and none should be demanded. If you wish you may re-apply at a later date, but it is suggested that you wait at least 6 months before doing so. Those who persistently badger the Council will be ignored, and may even face punishment under the Forum Rules.

Please note that once attained, your status as a Believer is a privilege, not a right. To a certain extent you are representing this forum and the ideas and values it aims to promote. Any FE Believer who engages in conduct not befitting their status in any part of the website may lose that status, in addition to any other punishments which result from said behaviour. Furthermore, your status as a Believer is contingent on your continuous and consistent advocacy of (and belief in) a flat Earth, and statements to the contrary may result in the revocation of that status. Finally, the Zetetic Council has absolute power within the confines of this board and the limitations of the Forum Rules, which apply as always.

It is my hope that the discussions on this board will aid us all on the path to truth and enlightenment, for what we seek is something beautiful and pure:

"When this light came to me, the effect on me I can not
explain for it
is not possible, but I can give you a small idea of
it. It was as if all the avenues of my senses became opened simultaneously,
my mental or inward vision entered a scene where all
the facts were laid bare to me.
The impressions remained in me and details began to form.
and then these details were unfolded in perfect order."

Announcements / The Forum Rules - Read Before Posting!
« on: November 07, 2010, 03:07:23 PM »
Hello, and welcome to the Flat Earth Society Forum! Here at The Flat Earth Society our goal is to make debate and discussion of all kinds as good as it can possibly be. As such, our Forum Rules are designed to strike a balance between the needs of formal debate, promoting The Flat Earth Society and Flat Earth Theory, and making the forum a fun and enjoyable place. In practice, this means recognising that different parts of the forum need to be moderated in different ways. As such, the Forum Rules are not enforced the same way in every board, and this is something members need to be aware of during their time here.

The purpose of this thread therefore is to outline the Forum Rules, explain where and how they are enforced, and answer some questions you might have about their interpretation and enforcement. All members are strongly encouraged to read this topic fully. We know it's long, but it will help you to get a sense of how the forum works, and what the forum staff consider appropriate behaviour in the various boards. It is your responsability to familiarise yourself with the rules; ignorantia juris non excusat.

For ease of use, the topic is divided into the following five sections:

1) The Forum Rules - A list of the forum's 11 general rules.

2) Rule Enforcement Guidelines - A rough guide to how the rules are enforced, i.e. warnings/bans.

3) Forum Guidelines - An outline of the different boards and how the rules are enforced within them.

4) Update Log - A log of updates and changes made to any of the above.

Any queries you may have about the rules or their enforcement should be posted in Suggestions & Concerns. We hope you enjoy your time here at The Flat Earth Society Forum!

- Lord Wilmore

Announcements / 1 Year Anniversary Special!
« on: October 31, 2010, 03:29:01 PM »
October 30th marked the 1 year anniversary of the Flat Earth Society's relaunch! To celebrate this, the Society will be releasing new documents in the Flat Earth Library and running a few contests as well. So check back here throughout November for updates!

We're starting with something very special! In 1898, Lady Blount (one of the founders of the Universal Zetetic Society and a prominent Flat Earth proponent) wrote a book called Adrian Galilio; a Songwriter's Story (which will be released in its entirety in PDF soon). It was a unique combination of prose, poetry, illustration, drama and sheet music. And now, 112 years after its publication, the Society is very proud to present 'Star-Dream', a song from Adrian Galilio, as performed by The Nordic Countess, Ingeborg and with the help of gotham from our very own TFES forums! As far as we know it has never been recorded before, so this is truly something special. Without further ado, the Flat Earth Society presents 'Star-Dream' (MP3):
