Imagine posting anything other than the Montreux performance, where you can hear people booing at the start.

If I may, I would suggest reading a little bit about the Zetetic Method and why it takes such a direct-realist approach to knowledge:

https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=48821.0

You say that you have direct personal experience that leads you to believe in a round earth, but even within the globularist framework that is supposedly only possible for a very small number of individuals, without relying on indirect arguments.

I am in my room, and the window is wide open, moonlight pouring in onto the floor. I know that a spider has got into the room, and I am looking for it. The spider runs out from under my bed. It is large but thin, without visible hairs, appearing scaly. Its exoskeleton is covered in luminous green striations, and they seem to grow and pulse when it crosses the moonlit sections of the floor.

I try to kill the spider with my shoe, but it survives. Now all the green striations appear to be draining into its abdomen, which is growing and pulsing and becoming large and green. The spider appears to be dying, but the bulging sac is feeding on the moonlight. It appears ready to burst.

I just had a dream I ate some expired bread and used reddit to realize it expired 1.5 years ago then I went to a fast food where a man used a raccoon to order kid sized tacos, telling the waiter they are for the racoon

So I went and said loudly that the man is just using his raccoon as an excuse. Then the raccoon ran off with a iPad

Anyways I just woke up from this nap and am really relieved because I did not actually eat spoiled bread

The Lounge / Hello Everyone!
« on: December 28, 2015, 11:17:32 PM »
I posted this over on our sister(/brother?) site, but thought I should share it with you guys as well. So as per the topic title, hello everyone!

Anyway, this thread is not actually a hello thread. It's more of an introduction thread. And, on that note, allow me to introduce someone very special. My cat. His name is Birley:

Birley is a pretty cat, and full of personality.

However, there is also something not quite right about him. Frankly, he is a bit of a dope. A hilarious dope, but decidedly a dope. This is a not-unusual pose:

(There is no-one/nothing off-camera here. He's just staring into the aether.)

He has a sister, Needle, and they're both about a year and a half old. They are the best of friends and love to hang out and play with each other. They're litter mates, and can't really bear to be apart:

Anyway, the reason I posted this topic is because I have been a member of the Flat Earth Society forums for almost ten years, and it's had a huge impact on my life. And when I got a cat, it only seemed right to give him an appropriate name. Whenever I see Birley, I think of you guys.

Merry Christmas, and a happy new year to you all. I'm really, genuinely hopeful that 2016 will be a better year for the Flat Earth Society, and that we'll finally end the rift in our community. I promise to do everything I can to make that happen.

IN VERITATE VICTORIA

jroa does a lot of good work under a lot of pressure, and frankly gets very little thanks in return.

I don't think this thread is very productive at this point, so I'm going to lock it.

For almost a year now, I do not know what to think. Which theory is true FE or RE? Please help me I am so confooooosed  ???

Why would the goverment fake the space program, that would cost a lot, why would they not want us to know that the earth is flat? Why do they want me to believe what is wrong? And if the earth is round, should we not slip down from it? I have so many questions!

There is only one way to embark upon decision: look out your window.

Today I did an interview with NewstalkFM, one of Ireland's largest radio stations. You can listen to it via the link below (roughly the last 10-15 minutes):

I suppose I should have said something over here as well as on tfes.org, and thanks to Particle Person/Alexandyr for making this thread. For reasons stated on the other site, I have been quite distracted and can't dedicate as much time to this as I'd like to. I felt that if reunification was the goal, the important work was to engage with the guys at tfes.org. That wasn't my intention going over there, but as soon as I started talking with pp & Parsifal, I realised this was not the best situation for anyone. For those of you who haven't read the thread in which most of my comments were made, you can read them here:

http://forum.tfes.org/index.php?topic=1704.0

Anyway, I'm happy to take any questions anyone wants to ask, and I'll do my best to answer them promptly. I've mostly be talking with Milosz and Steve via email, along with the fairly extensive (and ultimately fruitful!) back & forth in the thread I linked above.

To balance important details such as which URL to commit to as the home of TFES must weigh heavy at times. I don't know if much has been discussed with regards to that, but I'd be interested to hear what is being said?

As I understand it, the main proposal now is to have everything under www.theflatearthsociety.org, but use subdomains so that although the hosting will be split between different servers, all the content will remain indexable etc. under a single domain.

Yes, well, that's all well and good until the scientific community makes claims concerning truth, which they frequently do.
Just which claims are you referring to?

When they claim to accurately describe reality.

And of course, if by "because it works" you in fact mean 'because it describes the universe accurately', then that is a claim to to truth, obviously.
Truth or statement of fact?

Sorry? I've already made that distinction. If you have something to add, please do.

The bolded point is precisely the problem. Everyone talks about the superiority of the scientific method, except there are problems with the method as defined, and on top of that it is rarely practised as defined.
What problems with the scientific method are you referring to?

They have been referred to earlier in this thread. See John's posts.

There is no conflation of philosophy and theoretical physics.  No engineer I've ever worked with has mentioned any philosophical precepts when he's been designing a 12-lane multispan suspension bridge.

Have they ever mentioned relativity or quantum mechanics? No? I guess this means that these theories have no bearing whatsover on their 12-lane multispan suspension bridge. Oh sorry - you mean they can do their jobs without knowing anything about those things? I agree, but that doesn't mean those concepts aren't involved does it?

So some scientists do their day-to-day jobs without understanding the philosophical issues involved. Big wow. My binman doesn't know much about communal hygiene, but there you go.

J Davis,

To be honest I do find almost all fields of philosophy to be interesting. I dabbled in courses on western philosophies and pragmatism in college. I do understand that there is large field of philophy that deals with the implications of science and what constitutes science. However, those fields, while fascinating, have no real impact on science itself. Science is driven by its pragmatic qualities. We adopt a scientific theory because it works and that is what a scientist worries about. Not the philosophy of.

Yes, well, that's all well and good until the scientific community makes claims concerning truth, which they frequently do. And of course, if by "because it works" you in fact mean 'because it describes the universe accurately', then that is a claim to to truth, obviously.

The bolded point is precisely the problem. Everyone talks about the superiority of the scientific method, except there are problems with the method as defined, and on top of that it is rarely practised as defined.

In any case, this thread isn't about dissecting science. It is about the results of science such as the inventions and discoveries we enjoy today, and how those results would compare with a zetetic world, where testing a hypothesis is avoided at all costs.

It's really impossible to answer this question. A lot of great discoveries were made without the scientific method being involved, or even the testing of hypotheses. On thing I believe we can say is that there would be a lot less overturning and scrapping of models.

There is currently no contemporary philosophy involved in the sciences, which are purely theoretical.   You need to go back to the periods of Democritus, Lucretius, or Diderot to find any evidence of philosophical input into science.

This is quite demonstrably false. If you're making claims about truth and reality, there are philosophical issues at stake. This is like engineers claiming there is no theoretical physics involved in engineering. It's there, even if they don't have much direct contact with it on a day-to-day basis.

My beliefs are not a secret. I am a Flat Earther.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Flat Earth: General, Debate and Q&A
« on: July 14, 2014, 05:38:06 AM »
They were all intended to make the point that members such as sceptimatic were repeatedly posting totally off-topic, puerile, personal insults rather than engaging in any focussed debate.

The question at hand is the structure of the forum and its various boards. Not the quality of sceptimatic's posts. That jroa is trying to direct the thread back to its original topic is not a reason to get sore. This simply isn't the place for you and scepti to have a back-and-forth, simple as that. Relax.

26
This is a really excellent idea.

The Double by Fyodor Dostoyevesky.

Loved it.  I want to see a movie made out of it, set in modern times, with Jim Carrey in the main role.

Yeah, it was bonkers, but great. Also:

Anyway, finished that, and I'm now reading The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje.

Yeah, you can adjust the time through the main login screen. Just log out, click login, and set it to a different time, e.g. 90/120/360 minutes or whatever.
