Didn't Plato and Aristotle have a conversation about this about two millennia ago? I vaguely recall the latter explaining that forms do not exist independently.

There have been many theories.  I don't believe I could say one theory is greater than another.  In philosophy, you look at all the arguments present objectively and try to find something that makes them illogical (note:  logic in its true sense; as in an argument that is unsound [or invalid]).  You follow the argument (or perhaps postulate yourself) which seems most logical.

Knight, that's a very interesting take on it.

I will post back here later; metaphysics is probably my favorite philosophy.

Don't you know that cricket is just a re-creation of the most violent and destructive and terrible conflicts in the history of the Universe?  Shame on you for reducing the lamentable Krikkit Wars to a mere game!  NEVER FORGET!  NEVER FORGET!

i have adhd... belive me, it isnt misdiagnosed... but is that really a mental disorder? i dont think it is... you might, i dont... i just think it is too much energy... but i have learned to harness that energy... use it for good, most of the time...

I have it as well, but I can certainly recognize that it is often falsely diagnosed.

1 in 4 people suffer from mental illness and I think it is very cruel and horrible to attack them over it.

Does it seem to anybody else that if 1 in 4 people suffer from mental illness, maybe the definition is a little too broad?

I do not find it hard to believe that 25% of the population has some form of mental disorder be it small or large.

I am sure, however, that a large number of falsely diagnosed ADHD cases are involved.

There is nothing better than guacamole.

I will contest this.

I make a fresh garden salsa, with tomatos, tomatillas, red onion, garlic, red pepper, jalapeno, serrano, anaheim chili peppers, cilantro, vineger that has been soaking small garden peppers for a year, and a small amount of tequila.

It is excellence in a bowl.

Quote from: "The Dragon Reborn"
Sorry, pal, but a majority belief doesn't mean much. It doesn't make things true.

Consider this:  there's a room in which two groups of people are in.  The groups are to simply stand on opposing corners (the room is somewhat large to accomdate say 10 people standing in the corners).  One group(A), due to the lightning, see's what seems to be a small rock in the middle of the room while the other group(B) cannot see it, again due to the lighting.

One person in group A suddenly says, "What is a rock doing in the middle of the room?"  The people in group B are obviously taken aback and reply that there is no such rock.  Who is right?  Note:  I have not given the objective truth.  The rock could either be an illusion due to the textures on the ground and the lighting, or there could be a rock.

Let's say 8 people from group B go to group A.  Now there are 18 people in group A and 2 in group B.  Obviously the people in group A continue to say that there is infact a rock in the center of the room.  Now, due to the majority now in place, the people in group B are officially crazy.  It doesn't matter if there is a rock there or not, what matters is that group A, being the majority in this society has created the intelligibility.  When people in group B fail to see what the people in group A do, they are officially deviants or mentally insane.  The rock, for all intensive purposes, exists.  Whether it exists objectively or not is immaterial:  the rock exists subjectively.

Perhaps you spoke a bit too bluntly about reality.

Obviously this doesn't concern me, seeing as how I'm an incorporeal spirit who can manifest physically at times.

But, if it did concern me, I'd probably just make sure those chips wouldn't make me a zombie.

The Lounge / Atheism is not a belief.
« on: November 15, 2006, 10:48:47 PM »
Deism is a tricky one for atheism to get around (partially in response to dysfunction's post).  You're right, one could have ample evidence against a specific deity with reguards that the human interpretation of said god is correct, and since we like to live in the realm of intelligibility, we'll say its as close as it's going to get.

But deism is a different matter entirely since the "God" merely set the universe in motion and plays no role in managing it whatsoever.  From the idea that causality stemmed from a god-figure and everything else basically managed on its own (all that was needed was the spark for the fire), it's extremely hard to counter the argument.  At that point, its merely a preference or what seems more likely.  This is why its hard to see anyone other than firm believers in utter entropy reguard atheism as not a belief.

It's as much of a belief as any god is.

The Lounge / Re: The god who created smallpox

Quote from: "Ubuntu"
If a god exists, is it a being who cares about human happiness and suffering? If this god is controlling what goes on here on Earth, then this god created smallpox, a disease which killed as many as 500 million people in the 20th century, many of whom were children. If there is a god, it is almost certainly malevolent, and no, god does not love us.

If a god exists, he did not create a perfect world; he created a good one where we could make choices and go through moral development ourselves.

That argument is older than time.
