Ha.  We feel your pain.  Believe me.

The Lounge / Why Are People Such Jerks?
« on: October 14, 2011, 12:04:54 PM »
I have always been a trusting sort of person; I was brought up that way.  No more.  My little lake cabin has been totally stripped of everything right down to the electrical wiring and doors and cabinets and light fixtures removed.  It's a weekend type of place that's been there for ages without so much as a 2x4 stolen before.  Bless me for having good insurance.  Now I'm having to sort through old pics and trying to remember everything that's gone.  Just making the inventory gives me a headache.

We will now put the place up for sale the way it sits and be done with worrying about horrible people who just take whatever they want.  It was a pretty little place high above the water in an oak and maple woods with good fishing and many good times will be remembered.  Damnation to all thieves also because I've lost trusting in people.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Human Spontaneous Combustion
« on: September 23, 2011, 04:46:04 PM »

Anyone have a clue about human spontaneous combustion?  I was always told belief in this oddity was non-scientific and ignorant.

I did not realize that cockles were picked.  All this time I thought they were gathered, collected, or just raked up.  You Brits!

The entire US Dept of Education is a bunch of cretins.

Edit:  I sincerely hope this is a hoax.

Okay, so what is dumber than building your casino on the wrong side of the levee?

Flat Earth General / The Roman Arch
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:27:29 AM »
Looking at a Roman arch and paying particular attention to the shape of the keystone should tell anyone in about two minutes that the forces acting upon this very strong structure are downward. Observation only is required; no assumptions need be made and should satisfy even the most ardent zetetist among us. The Davis model is superior to the UA model.

...a family wedding.  I did not let down the side.  Our crew was every bit as presentable as the bride's.  I am so very glad it is finally over.  How many pairs of gloves am I expected to own, anyway?

The Lounge / Security Scare Foiled!
« on: January 04, 2011, 11:35:09 AM »
I got a phone call this morning from wanting to know if I bought a $300 gift card online.  "NO NO NO,"  I said.  Immediate call to the bank stopped the whole thing in its tracks and this was the only fraudulent charge. Lucky me.

What I want to know now is how the heck did Walmart figure out it was a suspicious charge?  How did they know my phone number?  Security must be better than I had imagined.   :)

Technology, Science & Alt Science / UN mulls internet regulation options
« on: December 17, 2010, 07:44:39 AM »
The UN, spearheaded by Brazil, considers internet regulation and is using Wikileaks as the excuse.  I predict outbreak of cholera.,un-mulls-internet-regulation-options.aspx

The Lounge / What Have I Wrought?
« on: November 17, 2010, 10:40:32 AM »

Apparently, I have overfed my songbirds all summer.  A cardinal is now so fat he has become aerodynamically unstable and he fell off backward from his favorite tree branch this morning.  Should I feel guilty or just carry on laughing?

The Lounge / All Souls' Day

Today is All Souls' Day.  What have you planned to celebrate?  I'll be attending a poker party at the cemetery.

It is becoming the home of bawing spammers.  May we have some guidelines in place, please.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Those Poor Animals
« on: March 27, 2010, 10:56:10 AM »
For the gullible Americans among us, the rest of you guys can skip this:

You know those Humane Society of the US ads?  with all the poor doggies and kitties?  I'd already decided it was probably a rip off just because of the ad blitz, so an idle five minutes garnered this:       Scroll to page 11

Basically what it says for all of us too preoccupied to look, in 2009 they took in (in New York state alone) $1,950,521.00 and the 'charity' got $103,141.00 or 5.29%. It doesn't address what the ad producers were paid to film all that misery.

I have to quit turning over rocks cause I just get depressed. This seems a good web site to check out other charities, BTW.

The Lounge / The Appalachian Trail

Has anyone here hiked it or pieces of it?  I'm planning on just doing pieces at a time, starting at the Georgia southern terminus.  It's one of the things to do on my Big List and I figure I'd better get started this spring.  Yeah, I always spend the winter reading seed catalogues and planning spring stuff.
