I'm not surprised, really.  Frankly, given the Pentagon's hatred of gays and lack of honesty, they're probably going to do it anyway.

Maybe someone ask Bush if this isn't a type of a "weapon of ass destruction".
I think this is what you meant to say

(CBS 5) BERKELEY A Berkeley watchdog organization that tracks military spending said it uncovered a strange U.S. military proposal to create a hormone bomb that could purportedly turn enemy soldiers into homosexuals and make them more interested in sex than fighting.

Pentagon officials on Friday confirmed to CBS 5 that military leaders had considered, and then subsquently rejected, building the so-called "Gay Bomb.

I remember hearing rumors about this a few years back, but now its confirmed. As the title states, I really just don't know what to say to this.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Re: Free Will Vs Determinism
« on: May 26, 2007, 03:39:45 PM »
The way I see it, is free will is a logical symptom of conciousness. Like Descarte said, "I think, therefore I am." If I am given a choice between A, B and C, I can, based on any number of factors, choose any of the 3. Determinism gives us a way, in principle at least, to predict this. However, my choice being predictable does not mean that i can't pick the others, it simply means I won't.

You choose what you desire based on your biological makeup, which is made up of chemical reactions and such, which is decided by the particles (composition and position.) This is all deterministic. Conciousness is simply the product of chemical interactions. To say otherwise is to boldy express human vanity and apply an illogical credit and power to humans. The world as we see it is the world as it is, there is nothing else, no invisible, formless entity that controls us(souls.) We simply are the product of complex physics, and thus are subject to determinism.

This argument can only be had by people that do not properly understand determinism. This argument is much better if it is called Predestination vs Free Will.
Predestination says that all things are planned out ahead. The preplanning mechanism is a subjective issue.
Free Will says that you can choose and create your own, and nothing is predetermined.
Determinism, when understood properly, is the reconcilliation of these ideas. It states that we have free will and are completely free to make our own decisions, but that the decisions we do make are wholly predictable given the proper information. Pierre-Simon LaPlace stated it best.

Quote
We may regard the present state of the universe as the effect of its past and the cause of its future. An intellect which at a certain moment would know all forces that set nature in motion, and all positions of all items of which nature is composed, if this intellect were also vast enough to submit these data to analysis, it would embrace in a single formula the movements of the greatest bodies of the universe and those of the tiniest atom; for such an intellect nothing would be uncertain and the future just like the past would be present before its eyes.

This explains how determinism applies to physics. Then one only has to see that chemistry is simply small scale physics applied in a big scale, and biology in turn is built on chemistry. This means that all biological functions, ie thought, are based fundamentally on physical law, and wholly deterministic. Chance could then be defined as a deterministic event in principle, of which the observer has not enough information in practice to predict it. Chance, luck, whatever you want to call it, is not real, wholly deterministic.

Determinism is a very very compelling idea because it has the infalsifiability of most longstanding philosophies and religious ideas, with the backing of fundamental science.

Can you explain why there are two completely different versions of Creation side-by-side in Genesis, if the Bible doesn't contradict itself?

Yes, well most scholors believe that the second (the one involving Eve splitting from Adam's rib) was added sometime during the ninth or tenth century B.C. The fact that there are two versions is does not bother me, there could be one hundred for all I care.
but [][][], as you said,(relavent part bolded)

The Bible is the truth. Every part of it is true, I cannot fathom any reason to doubt it. It has always been a perfect work and will continue to be perfect. There are no contradictions and there have never been any. There is no reality but that described in the Bible. Jesus lived and God exists.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: Atmoplane

The earth cannot be infinite.
Why not, exactly?

If the Earth had been infinite in size it would have had infinite mass and it would have taken an infinite amount of energy to accelerate it.
If the universe could be infinite in size than it could contain infinite energy and an infinite mass such as the earth.

Yes, but then 'most' of the Universe would have been filled by the Earth.
you cant fill most of an intinite universe. even with an infinite object in it, there is infinitely more room.

The earth cannot be infinite.
Why not, exactly?
Because that would require infinite everything, and there is not infinite everything.
Many modern top scientists believe in the possibility of an infinite universe.

I feel for ya dude.

I thought it was going to be another "me" story or something, but the fact that you're life was destroyed twise really sucks.

Has your dad said anything to you?
my dad called me once afterwords, december 23. he told me to come get my christmas present(it turned out to be a guitar that he had bought many months before.) when i got there, he handed it to me and closed the door. a few weeks later, i went over and tried talking to him, he wouldnt listen. i wrote down my number and email so he could get a hold of me, and he threw out the piece of paper. since then, no contact with him.

Oh so very, very wrong. I apologize if this is story is a bore. But it's just something I have to say, have to get out.
To start, I am currently 18, going to be 19 this summer. My girlfriend of almost 3 years (3 in august) and I have had an up and down relationship, to say the least. the first few years were amazing. We got along amazingly, with the two of us spending days, weeks, and at times even months on end together, just having a good time with each other. But as time went by, we started to grow apart. by about 7 months ago, it was done.
Now, this other girl had been after me for some time, and struck at the opportunity. we spent one night together. Just one. But luck was against us, and she got pregnant. Now, with her living in another city a few hours away, I had to move in with her. This involved my dad essentially disowning me(and despite my efforts I have not spoken to him since, nor his parents) me quiting my job, and dropping out of school so I could move in with her, rebuild my life there, and continue on. It sucked, but thats life, and it's not like it can get any worse, right? Wrong.
After a few weeks, at a the doctors, it was brought to my attention that the baby was concieved almost 3 weeks before I had had relations with her; further more, she admitted to having known this. I was shattered. And so, for the second time in a month, I was stuck completely rebuilding my life. But the story has not ended yet.
I go back to my home town, of Simcoe. I happen upon Suzanne, the first girlfriend, we strike up a chat, and thus starts a friendship. over the next weeks, we were once again playing around with the idea of a relationship. At first as a joke, but then in all seriousness, we began dating again. We seemed to be doing even better than before. It was exillerating.
As summer aproaches and we are both planning to head off to other things, we were talking about our plans together. Before, we had essentially lived together, and so were quite sure we could do it. Through the several months just passed, we had certainly learnt what we meant to each other, and I had certainly come to realize what I had almost lost. She began bringing up the topic of marriage and kids. She was never serious about it, it was half joke and half to see how I would handle such topics. Neither of us would deny the fact that we are certainly not ready for that as of yet.
Quite literally, the day after we had shared a wonderful dinner and a just wonderful time with each other(that would be this past tuesday), she emailed me to tell me that she had found someone else, a 40 ish year old man, and that we were over. I was and am utterly devastated, despite the fact that I had it coming to me.

Any comments/advice etc are welcome, and even if there is none, it just feels good to get that out.

Flat Earth Debate / Re: 100 Proofs the Earth is Not a Globe
« on: April 26, 2007, 07:24:43 PM »
And guess which type of map projection Seamen typically use.
Mercator, with distortion due to the ROUNDNESS of the real earth in relation to the flat surface. Also, it was invented in 1569, long before the "RE conspiracy"
also of note, it shows a relatively small little continent at the south labelled antarctica, and oddly, no ice wall.

Flat Earth Debate / Re: 100 Proofs the Earth is Not a Globe
« on: April 26, 2007, 07:19:15 PM »
  • Since the Earth is round using a globe would result in very accurate navigation. Using a flat map with the appropriate adjustments would also allow this.
It is impossible to accurately turn a sphere into a flat surface. Why do you think there are so many types of map projections?
Exactly. Because the earth is round, they need different flat projections to show different aspects of it. If the earth were flat, then they wouldnt need all of these different projections.

« on: April 24, 2007, 04:38:03 PM »
To those many who believe the U.N. is a success: please describe how they've succeeded at the following goals

Quote from: UN Charter
WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED

to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and

to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and

to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and

to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

AND FOR THESE ENDS

to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and

to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and

to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and

to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples,
Not only have they failed miserably at all of that, but they have arguably made it worse. Before the UN, wars were generally between fairly equal powers, or rebellions against empires; 'tangible' enemies, direct reasons for war. Now, the wars are proxy wars against small relatively weak nations, with false reasons for invasion masking the strategic value of the area. when 2 nations fight now, it is either a small nations ethnically cleansing another/itself, or it is a world power fighting another power through proxy wars.

Wouldn't that, like, cause the big 5 to leave the U.N.?
That will never happen. if it did, the UN would collapse, with no power behind it. another such organization would be created in its wake, and all the others would follow in line. its alot of work and change for nothing. it would be far simpler to just rework the UN, but they will never go for that.

24
The Lounge / Re: The United Nations - Success or Failure?
« on: April 24, 2007, 04:08:31 PM »
That's the problem. No one in the UN dares stand up to one of the big 5. It's happened plenty of times with Russia as well. Think ditching the veto would be a good step to take.
Yes, yes it would. The big 5 idea doesnt allow for the changing world and changing powers; its too reflective of the just post ww2 era. but the world is a far different place now. but then, those with the veto arent about to give it up easily

The Lounge / Re: The United Nations - Success or Failure?

The UN can get round the veto using the General Assembly but it doesn't happen often
even if it does, USA disregards it, and still does what they want. No one has the power nor political means to stop them.

26
The Lounge / Re: The United Nations - Success or Failure?
« on: April 24, 2007, 04:00:02 PM »
The UN isn't inneffective, depending on how you define effective. heres how it works:
1 Event occurs.
2 UN passes resolution.
3 USA supports or vetoes depending on what benefits them the most.
4 any major objectors (generally though not always small weak countries with oil) are threatened with      military action
5 Countries pass resolution to dispute the US, which they veto
6 The americans do whatever they want

the only difference the UN brings is it adds in steps 2-5. other than that, life is the same UN or not.

5. Uh, yeah you can. Start at the equator, go east. You'll end up where you were before. Sorta like a ring around the earth.
i think out of sympathy you should be given time to think this one through again.

Alright, imagine that planet is earth. Imagine the ring around it is your flight path (I know you can't fly that high, but you get what I mean).  So if you start at the top, and go around, you're in the same place.
i dont see a straight line anywhere in that diagram.

1.  You can't get money of out convincing the entire world that the world is round when it really isn't.

2. Despite the all the contradicting evidence?

3. Uh yeah, the sun would have to be a shitload smaller than it really is for that to make any sense.

4. Yeah, because the entire world is right.

5. If the world was flat you couldn't fly around it in a straight line.
1.     Yes, actually, you can. Resources......keep known supply down, costs up, while having a massive supply to yourself.

2.     Like what?

3.     yes, yes it would. then i guess it is.

4.     how so?

5.     and you dont....you go around the north pole in a circle, in both models.

you are attacking the FE proof without providing any of your own. since, as you said,
It's been proved so many damned times that it's round it's just incredible.
so it should be quite easy to provide some of this proof.
