Flat Earth Debate / Re: Transit of Venus
« on: October 25, 2013, 08:56:02 PM »
Well, for one, my brother saw it with his own eyes.
I think he made some pictures.
I'm not going to ask him for them because he'll just chastise me for arguing with "trolls" again.
Sorry for the late reply. What exactly did your brother see? You'll have to elaborate a bit more. He saw the whole pattern of visibility? I would doubt that.

Flat Earth Debate / Re: Can we stop all this ignorance please?
« on: October 25, 2013, 08:29:31 PM »
Just to add one general thought to this discussion: Whenever someone claims that the Earth is flat, they are called "ignorant". However, I am absolutely sure that a large percentage (above 90%) of the population in all developed countries would not be able to provide a proof that the Earth is a sphere that is in accordance with the alleged proofs provided by mainstream science. And I don't count "Go to space and take a picture!" here, because I want proof that can be reproduced by an average person. Allegedly, such simple proofs exist in mainstream science, yet, like I said, most people would not be able to provide such a proof if you stopped them on the street and asked them. I dare you to try it if you think otherwise.

In fact, I have seen many people give "proofs" that were easily refuted and where even mainstream scientists would have bashed their heads into a wall. And many people would eventually probably admit that their teacher simply told them so, so it must be correct.

Yet, it is the flat-earthers who are described as "ignorant"? In my opinion, it is more ignorant to accept some statement as a basic fact without being able to actually prove it than rejecting it outright and using the basic perception of our senses as default assumption. I might be an anomaly among flat-earthers, but I am an atheist. I will not accept the assumption that there is a god without accompanying proof. In the same way, I will not accept the assumption that the Earth is a sphere without accompanying proof. However, large parts of the population do. And that to me is akin to a religious belief. If you determine why people believe in a god, you will find that most of them simply accepted the statement "There is a god!" from their parents. In the same way, people simply accept the statement "The Earth is a sphere."

So if someone wants to stop ignorance, they should start with the people who actually do believe that the Earth is a sphere. If the Earth is indeed a sphere, then we flat-earthers are simply a strange anomaly, a sadly small bunch of misled people. Such people are easily ignored. However, the people who believe the Earth is a sphere without having even the most basic proof for such an important statement are people who will believe everything that someone in authority told them. They are your real problem.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: The notsoflat earth
« on: June 05, 2009, 03:28:12 AM »
Sorry to inform you, but... If there is light, there is heat. It's because there are 2 ways to create light. First, electrons. Well, those give heat ofcourse. Second. Chemical reactions. Ever heard of Collision Of Atoms? That's what happens if you want to do some chemistry. If atoms collide they will keep going faster and produce heat.

Conclusion: Your theory is WRONG

HAHA. Sorry but where did you learn about flourescance?! This occurs when a decomposition (or reaction) emits its energy via light not heat. The energy of the reaction is "stored" in one of the products as it is created in a high energy state.  The light energy is then released when the electrons drop to the more stable energy state.  This is the same type of idea of transition metal complex colours, except this is when the complex absorbs certain light energies depending upon its do or dt (depends upon the type of complex) and whether it is possible for the metal to attain a high spin configuration from its low spin configuration due to electron spin pairing rules (complex type rules and ligand type also come into this quite significantly but is quite complex (yeah you got the pun...)). Thus giving us the reason why they are coloured and how strongly they are coloured.

Light is therefore possible without the expulsion of heat (especially in bioluminescence  as these reactions are carried out by enzymes and occur MUCH more easily than the harsh conditions occuring in a conical flask).
Maybe you should go to school instead of copying some nonsence from the internets..
Why is it that Flat-Earthers are always accused of ignoring evidence, but when Round-Earthers are provided with evidence (which can actually be found in many school textbooks), they can ignore it with statements like that one.

Yes, there is light without heat. There are reasonably simple experimental setups for checking that fact at home (or at school, as a matter of fact, so you can ask your chemistry teacher about them). Or you can just buy a glow stick (or "snap light").

You said above that there are two methods of creating light, and then you sort of posted the equivalent of clueless mumbling ("collision of atoms something something...") as opposed to actually saying what these methods are - probably because you have no idea how light is actually created. There are quite a few more than two methods for creating light.

But on the other hand, I think you are the same guy who thought that mobile phones work via satellites. I guess you think that all those mobile phone antenna towers are purely for decoration.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: Proof its round
« on: March 04, 2008, 02:05:20 AM »
how do you explain the navy shooting down the spy satellite?

Just out of curiosity, how does that prove that the Earth is round?

It's all amusement, none of it is fact, and frankly I applaud the FE'ers dedication to the cause.  But until they come up with actual, physical proof beyond random "Government conspiracy!" and "Um, the earth is moving...upward?  Yeah, upward!  That's it!" type statements, they will forever just be playing in the philosopher's ultimate sandbox.

Please define "actual, physical proof". What actual, physical proof do the round-Earthers have? That is something that I have yet to see.  You complain about the Flat Earther's arguments, when the Round Earther's arguments often border on the ridiculous.

What is the problem with the Earth moving upward? Round Earthers claim "Um, the Earth is spinning! Yeah, spinning! That's it!" Great. There is no physical proof for Dark Energy or Dark Matter, yet the current world view of the "greatest scientific minds" is based on these concepts. Is that also philosophical masturbation then?

1. It doesn't, they believe there's an ice wall that would stop you from going over the edge. Too bad no one's ever seen it.

Of course people have seen it. It's just that round Earthers don't believe that people have seen it.
Quote
3. The Earth doesn't have to be a sphere for the laws of physics to apply, however if the laws of physics do apply, Earth must be a sphere, as gravity will cause any object above a certain mass (even a flat Earth is well above this minimum mass) to form a sphere.

I guess you don't realize that the Flat Earth model has eliminated the need for the force called "gravity".
Quote
4. That doesn't help your case, as Google Earth is part of the conspiracy according to the FEers.

No, Google Earth isn't a part of it. But where do they get their images? I don't think that Google owns a bunch of satellites.

we are told all the time that bacteria is around us all the time, but have you ever seen bacteria? scientists say that they can see bacteria through microscopes all the time, but how can you be sure that they are telling the truth? maybe they are part of the Conspiracy?

Nice try, but it doesn't quite work, because microscopes are fairly cheap. I owned a microscope as a kid, and I've seen bacteria. In fact, anyone with a bit of skill can build their own simple microscope. But building a spaceship to prove whether the Earth is round or flat, that's a totally different thing. Apples and oranges here.

a couple of days ago, there was one person from there who spammed a lot here. he made about 3 usernames. there was another person who started spamming aswell, who found the AN through this site, but he only posted in the one thread and left.

but if any FEer were to post a thread on the AN, trying to convince people the world was flat, well they'd get their argument completely ripped appart and destroyed.

So the AN people can come here and spam, but the FE people are supposed to go to the AN board and try to use arguments to convince the ANers?

If so, why can't I feel the centrifugal effect - I live very near the rim.

Shouldn't you pose the same question to round-Earthers? If the Earth is round and rotates (at a fairly high speed, I might add), then why don't we feel the centrifugal effect?

You seem like a trustworthy individual.  I want documented proof of you in the frame of the shot holding up an edition of a current newspaper.  Actually, perhaps video evidence would be better.  If you fly over the ice wall in a light aircraft (like a Cessna) while taking photo's and video clips, I'll believe you and will convert to being a FE'er.  How does that sound?

You are extremely trusting, you know that? I could never be that trusting. I saw a documentary called "The Lord of the Rings" on TV recently, and there was crystal-clear footage of the most amazing people and creatures (Hobbits, Balrogs, Wizards, etc.) in that documentary, yet I still fail to believe that these creatures really exist or existed. ;)

I'm sure any movie studio could easily provide the footage you require. :D

13
Quote from: "Mr Hanky"
Of course it's relevant.  The only photo's I've seen of any of the things you mention are blurry, hazy, or just plain blob-like.

Actually, to me, a photo of the Yeti doesn't hold any more value than a person telling me "I have seen the Yeti". The person could be lying and the picture could be faked.

Have a look at this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retouching
Faked pictures were already used even for political purposes long before Photoshop.

14
Quote from: "Mr Hanky"
Yes, if you brought back evidence, like .... photo's.  Especially if those photo's were taken from an aircraft (I'm yet to see any such evidence).  Call me a trusting individual.

So if after not posting here for two weeks, I post a picture of the ice wall here, you will believe that the Earth is flat?  :D

but are just putting arguments for it for whatever reason (debating practice? fun?)

I've never even considered this board to be debating practice, because with very few exceptions, the people who argue in favor of a round Earth model come up with fairly weak arguments (and telling people to read the FAQ doesn't count as debating practice). If I want debating practice, I go e.g. to the boards at www.infidels.org ( http://www.iidb.org/vbb/index.php ). Many of the discussions there are led at a very high "debating skill level".

16
Quote from: "Mr Hanky"
Not me personally.  But are you telling me that for a population of well over six billion people, no one has?

Isn't that fairly irrelevant? Out of these six billion people, there are many who claim to have seen Bigfoot, the Yeti, angels, UFOs, the Virgin Mary, etc., etc. Does it really make you more or less likely to believe in a round Earth if there are many people who claim that they have seen that there is or isn't an ice wall at the edge of the world? If I tell you that I have travelled to the edge of the world and that I have seen the ice wall myself, would you believe me?

Because then we'll be told that we simply didn't reach the ice wall.

I think if you managed to reach the South Pole, this would count as pretty conclusive evidence that there is no ice wall, as there is no South Pole in flat Earth geography.

So FE'ers believe that no one has ever flown South for long enough to disprove their theories,

Have you?

if you people believe in this whole 'ice wall' then why dont all of you regular posting nutters who actually believe in this get together and go to the ice wall? you say the government stops anyone from getting near it, if they killed you then we would know because you arent posting anymore and everyone would spread the word.

How would you know the difference whether those people stopped posting because they were killed or stopped posting out of embarrassment?

And would you be willing to prove one of your beliefs by letting someone kill you for it? I strongly doubt that.
Quote
how could they cover that up? or if they didnt kill you you could come back here and actually tell us. you believe in it so much so why not attempt it?

Why is this kind of thing always being asked of flat-Earthers? If you believe so much that the Earth is round, why don't you get in a boat and go to the South Pole?

Then came WWII and the whole new frontier came crashing down on the Powers-That-Were. Rocketry took a big step forward and from the high-altitude pictures thus obtained it became clear that something was very, very wrong.

As much as I would like this explanation, there is just a little problem with it: The conspiracy must be significantly older than WWII, because you don't need rocketry to tell a flat Earth from a round Earth. All you need is a boat.

You'd think that the conspiracy would date back to the "discovery" of Antarctica, because that is the point where this lie really manifested. However, Antarctica was made up already by Ptolemy - and yes, even mainstream scientists admit that Ptolemy made it up, as nobody had actually seen Antarctica at that time. supposedly because he believed that the landmasses had to be symmetrical. So the core of the conspiracy would date back at least as far as Ptolemy's time..

By the way, I do think that it should give people pause that the one continent that can not appear on a flat Earth map and whose existence would refute the flat Earth theory appeared on round Earth maps before it was even "discovered"!

There's no need to question your surroundings (although an athiest [apologies if I've used the term incorrectly as many people do] upbringing would also have contributed) as your surroundings are explained to the molecule. Anything and everything has an explanation.

I can tell that you haven't had an atheist upbringing yourself. You may be surprised that most people who call themselves "skeptics" are also atheists. Check out the "Skeptical Enquirer" at some point. After all, it's a part of being an atheist not to believe what the majority of the world population believes.

Now I understand the ignorance of the acceptnace of truth - skeptisism (again sorry if I've used the term incorrectly, but I think you know what I mean) is the path to the actual truth.

Agreed. And Occam's razor is a mighty sword.

There is the third option that these pictures were indeed taken from "very high up", but not from a satellite orbiting a spherical Earth. After all, all of these pictures you are referring to could just as well have been taken from planes.

You know how a comet leaves a tail?  Are we leaving a "tail" as we travel upwards?  If not, what force is keeping the underside from slowly deteriorating and eventually becoming nothing?

The "underside" is being accelerated with the rest of the Earth, so there is no reason for it to deteriorate. In fact, it is my assumption that the force that accelerates the Earth actually pushes against the underside.

It's funny TO ME because it seems absurd TO ME...

The idea that we all evolved from single-celled organisms sounds quite absurd as well, yet it can be explained through fairly simple scientific arguments. I think the reason why the idea of a flat Earth sounds absurd to you is not that it is absurd, but that it's not what you were taught. Like I said, 400 years ago, you probably would have been a firm believer in a geocentric model of the Universe, and you would have wondered how anyone can believe in Galileo's absurd ideas.

An interesting consequence of the solid having a lower density than the liquid is that ice will melt if sufficient pressure is applied. With increasing pressure the melting point temperature drops and when the melting point temperature is lower than the ambient temperature the ice begins to melt
