This intrigues me. The Nazis had proof the earth was flat. When have the Nazis ever been wrong or let anyone down?

No one seriously believes the earth is flat, this entire site is a hoax to make people buy t-shirts which never arrive.

In my opinion everyone who uses a computer lots should have a program that reminds you to take breaks. Personally I think everyone computer system should come with this by default

I use workrave but I'm sure you can find something free and useful whatever platform you use.

It is important to take short breaks often so your fingers and arms don't end up in main, and longer breaks less often so that your legs and body do not get hurt and damaged.

Do you have other advice for computer user?

Island by Huxley is one of my favorite books of all time. Check it out if you like him.

seconded, Island is a favorite book.

I'm listening to an audiobook of "fire upon the deep" and it doesn't make any sense I might stop.

The Lounge / What do you do on the computer/internet?
« on: June 15, 2013, 11:21:49 AM »
What do you do on an average day on the internet? What websites do you go to, what do you do on them, do you enjoy it or is just grinding away the hours?

I'm trying to change my internet usage habits because I noticed they were unhealthy. On the other hand, I don't know many good sites or anything..

You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dua%27s_layer

Dua's layer is a newly discovered layer of the human cornea proposed in a scientific article in June 2013.[1] It is 15 micrometres (0.00059 inches) thick and is located between the corneal stroma and Descemet's membrane. It is the sixth layer of the cornea to be discovered

I recommend not actively searching for happiness. Happiness is like a cat. When you call it it'll hide behind the TV, but when you're just sitting on the computer minding your own business it'll jump on you and fall asleep in your lap.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Re: On the automation of work
« on: July 24, 2012, 09:22:46 PM »
As someone who works with automation daily, I can honestly say that no one at the company that I work for, to the best of my knowledge, has ever directly lost their job because it was replaced by automation.  My plant employs well over 1000 full time people and many part timers.  When a particular operation is automated, the person who formerly occupied that position is absorbed elsewhere until a position opens up.

My company does not do this to directly increase profits.  They do it to lower prices.  The lower they can reduce the cost of manufacturing their product, the cheaper they can sell it, which means that they sell more of the product.  This benefits the consumer, the company, and may even help to lower inflation and stimulate the economy.

I think this is a win for everyone.

I'm pleased to hear this, it's a lot better than the situation I had expected.

I came across some recorded essays which are relevant

good listen and very optimistic.

Here's a writeup by sci-fi author against DRM http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2012/04/more-on-drm-and-ebooks.html it's actually an essay he sent to the publishers who were considering not restricting thier ebooks in future.. his main argument against DRM in this essay (which is geared towards the publishers) is that it stops people moving books from one reader to another and he suggests instead tracking people by hiding details about them in their files without their knowledge.. I am against this but it's not nearly as bad as DRM in my opinion.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / On the automation of work
« on: July 16, 2012, 08:28:38 AM »
An important issue for our society is the impact of the gradual process of automatic computers and robotics replacing working people. Automatic computers have been able to replicate small pieces of human reasoning (such as arithmetic calculation, route planning, deduction) and robotics may serve as artifical senses as well as limbs and transport. Most peoples source of income (which is necessary to pay for housing, food etc.) comes from working: We are focused on the work or parts of peoples jobs that may be automated by software or robotics.

Despite the massive balloon of optimism around robotics and AI in the 60s we have seen very slow and little public introduction of robotics replacing peoples work, on the other hand there has been significant introduction hidden away in industry (machines to build cars, robots to search out and sort packages in warehouses, ...). Much of 60s sci-if focused on the implications of a robotic explosion, where all of a sudden incredily articulate robots had a comparable population and access to resources as humans, nothing like this has happened of course - but the issue remains important.

The question is whether the replacement will simply benefit companies (in that they  get the same if not more work done, and have to pay much less  for it - hiring less people for example) and leave people helpless and unable to find jobs - or whether it will increase everyones wealth and free up peoples time. Consider for example if one person wrote a near perfect bus driving software which replaced all (this is not technically possible today, but it's realistic to think it could be in the near future) bus drivers: Everyone is still getting the bus and paying their fares so what happens to the drivers? Are they able to sit at home doing nothing and still receive the same paycheck, or are should they become unemployed and unable to find work? While it may seem unfair that the bus drivers no longer have to do anything and still receive a paycheck it's important to consider where the money would go elsewhere.

More generally, It's important to find a way that the gradual introduction of robotics can be seen as small steps towards a utopia where nobody ever runs low on food, shelter, medical supplies or anything they might need - rather than more and more hard working people becoming unemployed and being thrown into poverty so that techno-slave drivers become richer and richer profiting off automation.

This is a blog post called The Silencing of Maya http://niederfamily.blogspot.be/2012/06/silencing-of-maya.html

The girl can only speak via this certain program on the iPad, but the iPad is full of DRM and the software is non-free.. in particular it relied on a software patent and due to legal issues apple have recalled the program from the store. This is the situation her parents have to deal with:

We are now shadowed by a huge, impending threat.  With the removal of Speak for Yourself from the iTunes store, the SfY team has lost the ability to send out updates or repairs to the people who are currently using the app.  At this point, an update from Apple to the iPad's operating system (which gets updated semi-regularly) could render SfY useless (because if the new operating system was to be incompatible with the code for SfY, there would be no way for the team to reconfigure the app to make it compatible with the new OS and send out the updated version).  Our app could stop working, and Maya would be left unable to speak, and no one would be able to help us.

I recommend reading the rest of the article and keep in mind that this is the reality of non-free software.

Some problems with Firefox on the horizon: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_Social_Integration

The Web has become inherently social. The browser is not yet playing a significant role in enabling the social experience. We are going to change that.

The first generation of integrating the social experience into Firefox will consist of four touch points.

  •     Integration of persistent social notifications into the Firefox toolbar.
  •      Integration of news feeds, tickers, buddy lists, etc., into a Firefox sidebar.
  •      Integration of chat, voice, video, etc. into docked or floating window.
  •      Integration of a share/recommend service in the Firefox toolbar.

With these touch points, users will be able to carry their social presence and tools with them, outside of confines of specific social websites. No longer will users need to be visiting a social provider to share or recommend something within that service[/i]

Absolutely disgusting.

At 30:00 he argues for the earth being flat,

the whole talk is quite good too, he discusses why arguing destroys truth.

http://www.reddit.com/r/SuicideWatch/comments/u335v/my_brother_just_committed_suicide/
I am currently in the states while my brother was back home in India. He had some plans to startup a business and had been working really hard at it. I had called him yesterday to discuss his plans and ended up telling him it was too risky. He agrreed to give it up. Three hours later I missed a bunch of calls from him. After calling him back he started telling me how much he loved me. He was clearly drunk. He apologized for a bunch of things and asked me to tell him a good memory of us. He also asked why i didnt call him more often. I was busy driving so I said I'd call him in 5 mins. I did but he didn't answer any of my calls. I thought he went to sleep or something. This morning my parents called to come home ASAP. He committed suicide.

I don't really know how to deal with this. I didn't even say I love you to him when I said I would call him back. I am currently at the airport on my way back.

He was 20 years old.

Why suicide is selfish: You have a lot of people that care about you and it would be a real disastrous for them if you killed yourself.

So if you feel really awful and don't want to live  :'( you just have to continue suffer so that other people don't get upset..

it makes me worry sometimes is anyone on earth actually happy? maybe we are all just pretending to keep up appearances for others..  that's one of the reasons why I created vegetationism.

Can an OP with only two vague questions and a link to an external article be considered high-content?

I am guilty of this sometimes too, but what should I write when I have nothing more to add?
