it is kind of because the main flat earth argument is 'the earth is flat because it looks flat'.  good work!

I think the argument "It's flat because it looks flat" still easily wins over the argument "It's round because it is round". The former is at least based on observation, while the latter is purely a circular argument.

so if it is flat then we should be able to see the edge of the world with a telescope if we are high enough right?

You keep saying "us" and "we". If "us" and "we" includes you and me, then yes, "we" most definitely don't have the means to make a space craft. If I had the means, I'd be making one right now, because I'd love to go out into space.

If by "we" you mean humanity, then yes, the technology for making space crafts exists, but there are very few people who have the resources to actually apply this technology.

ok so the technology exists. and it has been made. people have gone out to space. they have taken photos from space which shows the earth to be sphere.

In any case, I may have missed a thread here, but I have yet to see an argument where you haven't lost in the most embarrassing way. Your arguments so far seem to be based on statements similar to "The Earth is round because it's round."

have it your way. so for someone to believe in a flat earth you HAVE to have someone who has NEVER heard about the round earth or flat earth before. once they reach the age of 5 however they will be intelligent enough to know it is round.

It's funny how in this thread, Vegeta accuses flat Earthers of making immature insults. So far, however, those immature insults seemed to come mostly from round Earthers. I have always thought that in any discussion you can easily figure out who is right or wrong just based on how many insults people feel they have to use. People who use insults are rarely on the winning side of an argument.

Yes, I'm wondering too why they don't. Why don't you? You could simply prove flat Earthers wrong by travelling to the "south pole". But for some reason, you don't. Just like 99.99999% of the population, you'll never get further south than Cape Horn or Cape Agulhas in your life, yet you ask why people don't just fly south to see whether or not they will reach the edge of the Earth. I'd think the answer would be obvious.

Do they now? Gravity is caused by all mass being attracted to each other, a law of the universe. This can be proven if you want. You'd have to ignore that if you wanted to believe a flat earth. Ignore gravity and believe an unknown force pushing the flat earth up at a constant acceleration, for no reason, with no speck of anything which comes close to proof. I'm sold on gravity thank you.

For the sake of the argument, let's try to be objective for a moment. Let's assume we have never heard anything about a round Earth of a flat Earth before, and now two people representing these two sides are trying to convince us of their opinions. You could hear something like the following:

Round Earther: The Earth is a sphere and we don't fall off because of a force called gravity which pulls everything towards the center of the Earth. We can't explain what causes gravity. By the way, the universe is expanding at an accelerating pace. We can't explain what causes this acceleration, so we have introduced a hypothetical concept of "dark energy".

Flat Earther: The Earth is flat and the reason why things are being pulled towards the Earth's surface is that the Earth is constantly accelerated in one direction. We can't explain what causes this acceleration, so we have introduced a hypothetical concept of "dark energy".

Which of these statements sounds sillier? Note how flat Earthers have to say "We can't explain" only once, because they don't have to explain where that mysterious force called "gravity" originates, i.e. flat Earthers don't have to deal with gravitons or eleven dimensions of M-theory only to explain why an object falls down instead of up. Occam's razor seems to favor the flat Earthers.

Lets have some theories as to what the conspiracy could be about.

To come back to the original topic of the thread, I think people assume too much when they see the word "conspiracy".

In the 17th century, Galileo Galilei promoted a heliocentric world view. He was forced by the church to recant his views. As most round Earthers also promote a heliocentric world view, they must believe that there was a "conspiracy" in place to keep people from believing in a heliocentric world in the 17th century. So what is the problem with a similar "conspiracy" today to keep people from believing in a flat Earth? Whatever reasons the church may have had in the 17th century to keep Galilei from spreading his ideas may be exactly the same reasons that today's governments have for letting people believe that the Earth is a sphere.

I personally don't actually think that a huge conspiracy is necessary. Throughout human history, the majority of humans have believed incredibly stupid things without a cabal of puppet masters behind the scenes to pull the strings. I think the number of people who have to be willing to actively conceal the thruth can be surprisingly small.

Because cosmologists rightly use it to describe things that they cannot otherwise explain. We can explain ourselves being attracted to the earth via gravity and the earth being round, rather than rely on dark matter and acceleration.

What is the difference between relying on acceleration and relying on gravity?

In fact, scientists have a very hard time explaining the origin of gravity, so explaining the "downward pull" we experience on Earth through acceleration sounds at least as reasonable to me.

Why does the sun "have to" move by zig-zagging?

Turns out that at different latitudes, the sun is at different heights in the sky.  So your friend in Perth will be like, "Dude, you're right, it is much lower in my sky than it is in yours, wtf?"

The sun is not directly over you during midday; not at all times of the year.  In fact, if you don't live in the tropics, then the sun is never directly overhead.

So yeah, get off your podium.  You don't win.  You are not a winner.

have you measured where the sun is exactly personally? have measured the height of the sun at different latitudes personally? if not shut the hell up. i still win loser.
