Also, emphasizing "white privilege" appeals to guilt rather than compassion.

The end, there is some possible truth about it being more of guilt than compassion...that may be from a few. However, most is either from people jealous and lazy, or those that want to jump on a mainstream bandwagon and hope to be accepted in the "cool crowd".

I wasn't talking about the motivation of those appealing to "white privilege", but rather the emotion that appealing to "white privilege" stimulates in the people that are confronted by this argument, whether by design or by accident. Probably accident.

Hey guys! I was tipsy and thought of you.

@Shifter - I know it's rough living in 'straya. Spend 10 minutes every day doing a headstand. It will even out your brainwaves and make the world less confusing.
@Pez - Love is just around the corner. Don't give up!
@SCG - Hi mom, I'm eating my vegetables.
@BHS - You are beautiful regardless of the black folk whispering behind your back.

Oh yeah, the topic: "White privilege" is indeed a thing... on average. It's just an exceedingly stupid strategy to bang on about it endlessly. The margin is small enough that exceptions are the rule, which causes a lot of people to feel cheated/alienated. Also, emphasizing "white privilege" appeals to guilt rather than compassion.

Hey it's Totes! I totally didn't notice your absence! Sorry about that!

As for you saying it's exceptions rather than the rule, sorry but that's just not the case.

"exceptions are the rule"

You haven't been doing your daily headstands, have you?

(don't pretend you haven't cried yourself to sleep every day that you don't get a response from me)

TotesReptilian is alive?!!!

What does it mean to truly be alive? The affirmation of consciousness? The consumption of carbon to maintain the cohesion of a collection of commonly coalligned particles? A twinkle in the eye and a wiggle of the bum?

Fuck yeah I'm alive.

You can't stay in the shade while sit under the sun.

Yes you can.  Unless you mean you can't get a sun tan in the shade.

If the sun is a sphere like the earth, then technically we are always above the sun, not under it.

Meanwhile back in fantasy land...

<Tweet about dumb people>

Why am I not surprised?

Because you understand that there are 300+ million people in the US, and that you can find anecdotes of stupid people on every side of every issue if you look hard enough? At least I HOPE that's why you aren't surprised... right?

Precedent isn't critically important to this Supreme Court.

Paul Ryan standing up to trump? I guess there's for a first time for everything.

Personally I think the most likely cause of failure in this plan is trump getting distracted by shiny object.

Tell Hillary to give a speech in which she spends thirty minutes reminiscing about how she won the popular vote. Wait until after midterms though.

Dammit, I hate learning about civics.

The Lounge / Re: I'm no longer a conspiracy theorist.
« on: October 31, 2018, 08:43:22 PM »
As some of you may know and seen, I used to be a conspiracy theorist. I've promoted conspiracy theories such as 9/11 being an inside job, chemtrails, shootings like Sandy Hook being a hoax, etc. Basically I was your mid tier conspiracy theorist where I didn't fall for every conspiracy theory I happen upon but I did believed in some of the more mainstream theories out there.

How I got into conspiracy theories in the first place basically started with my interest in UFOs. My dad once saw some when he was a teenager and that got me curious as to what he saw. I listened to an array of speakers and radio talk show host (surprisingly I didn't listen to Alex Jones. His antics never appealed to me) and still do listen to some for their other content.

What actually started my journey out of the conspiracy thoery community was when I decided I wanted to become a cop. The more I learned about police and police work, the more I realized that they are human like me with the same interests. By the time I graduated from the academy, I've came to the conclusion that police don't have niether the will nor the resources to hoax something like Sandy Hook.

Things came to a head, one day, when I thought to myself "hey, if I only believed that the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax simply due to my ignorance on the subject, what else am I believing in simply due to my ignorance?" That's when I remembered one of the posters on this site linked to YouTube channel called Myles Power in a 9/11 thread. I decided to watch the whole series with an open mind and the series basically answered all of my questions about that event.

Fast forward to today. I've pretty much renounced all of the conspiracy theories I believed in by listening to counter arguments. There are still some things I have questions on, some things that I'm still a bit weary of, and some things I'm still convinced is true. But all and all, you can't confuse me with Alex Jones with what I believe or don't believe.

Welcome to the wonderful world of skepticism! Feel free to theorize about conspiracies all you want, but withhold belief, either for or against, until the evidence warrants it. Tentative belief and "I don't know" are perfectly valid options! Wasting countless hours on the pooper reading philosophy is optional, but highly recommended.

Welcome.

I would argue that both approaches are equally upside-down.

I went to the 7-11 the other day.
Try opening the 'enter' door on the right with your left hand
with a cane in your right hand. It's awkward.
I worked my way around the door just in time for an 11 year old kid
to use his forearm to push me back and force his way out.

I called him an asshole, loud and clear.
His mother was following him out.
"Did you just call my son an asshole?"

"Yes."

She paused a moment and then shouted, "GET OUT OF MY WAY!"

"Fuck you.", I knocked on the other glass door, "This is your only escape."
She was so pissed she almost knocked the door off it's hinges on her way out.

I'm sure when she retells the story she is the victim.   ::)

I don't remember the point I was trying to make.   ;D

That it's disrespectful to talk about 7-11 on 9-11?

I don't believe there is an outlet anywhere that is completely objective and unbiased in its reporting. Too many humans involved.

Then which in your view consistently rates at least better than some others. For example, FOX would be pretty low on the lest for objectivity. Which would be up near the top? Which is the most worthy one to spend your time reading?

Or do you read from multiple sources on that pander to both sides of the political spectrum with a grain of salt and make up your own mind

For example, in Australia, the ABC is recognised as being up near the top although IMO there is a little bit of a slant to the left with it. But it is far more worthy to read that than anything else if you are going to digest any news at all

It depends. I don't really have a favorite, I don't read any one in particular on a regular basis, and I'll read just about anything if it runs a story I'm interested in. C-Span, APnews, and NPR are all pretty objective, if a bit dry and bare-bones. Foreign outlets can be usefully dispassionate about certain subjects. Reuters and the BBC (as previously mentioned) are decent for US politics.

The real secret isn't identifying the "best outlet" though. It's learning how to read sources that you know are biased. Assume everyone is biased/emotional/ill-informed/fallible to some degree. Learn to detect it. Read everything skeptically. Interpret everything generously to the author before criticizing it and generously to the author's opponents before promoting it.

Easy to say, hard to do I guess.

I think the NYT is a solidly left publication, but I don't think I'd call it liberal.
I don't think there's a major mainstream "leftist" publication thst isn't neoliberal in the US...

Meh. I would peg MSNBC as "leftist", Fox as "absurd propaganda", and most other major outlets as just sensationalist to varying degrees. I would hesitate to describe any outlet as distinctly neoliberal. NYT is hard to pin down though. Left/right are stupidly oversimplified labels anyway.

Is there an outlet in America that you believe is completely objective and unbiased in its reporting?

I hope they just mean that they are trying to get a handle on certain situations before they escalate into crimes. If someone is screaming racial obscenities from their front porch at passersby, a friendly visit from the local constable for a short chat is totally warranted. If they start hauling people in, that's a whole 'nother story.

Unfortunately, their vague-ass Orwellian tweet doesn't give us much to work with.

Okay then 'Answer Man', what changes to the system would you like to see? How do you think the American people would be better served? Or do you think there is nothing wrong with the system that is currently in place that brought about the likes of Trump pitting against the likes of Hillary in the first place?

Election reform, probably via constitutional ammendment: ranked voting, proportional representation, open-source automated districting.

Campaign finance reform is probably also necessary, but it's complicated and I am clueless.

You can call them whatever you like, it really just is rude but you're not running for office. But I think you would expect better from someone with Presidential aspirations. It kind of put Hillary in the same basket as Trump to be honest showing this presidential race really was a race to the bottom. Both your candidates were gutter trash. One of them was just more capable at faking 'looking and sounding' 'Presidential'.

The problem is the system is so adversarial, you govern for those that voted for you when in reality, you should be governing for all those who voted for you - as well as those that didn't - basically, every American, not just a fringe part of it.

False equivalence followed by platitudes. Vintage Shifter.

When Trump has really done something shit, I have always called him out on it or made fun. When it comes to political ideology, I respect that their are differing views - I wont hate on anyone for having a view that is not shared by myself. You know - like calling half the contrary as belonging in a basket of deplorables.

I agree. Calling conservatards deplorables is just rude, and I won't stand for it!

(I'll let that first bit of revisionist history slide for now.)

So is Trump as President like watching your baby grow up? From being a baby not knowing what the fuck they are doing or what is going on around them, to the temper tantrums and melt downs of the toddler stage to the part of growing up where they start to learn big words.

Go Trump GO!!!!!

Ha ha ha....see I told y'all shifter wasn't a conservatard...he is an equal opportunity abuser.

So the bar for not being a conservatard is realizing that Trump is basically a toddler? See... normally I'd worry that you are setting the bar so low that you risk defining conservatards out of existence (we definitely don't want that!), but it seems to barely put a dent in the conservatard population. So I guess I'll allow it. Welcome to the non-conservatard club Shifter! Yay!

President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!

Why does he tweet these things? No one believes he actually cares about people.

My guess: he accidentally overheard a uniformed adult complaining about this possibility, and decided to parrot it without a second thought.

On the other hand, this tweet is cause to celebrate! "Humanitarian" is a six syllable word. New record!

You not a dinasour either.

And you are not wise.  >:(

No, I am wise but my avatar isn't wise either.

Is it wise to be so deceptive?

This is relevant with what you do understand with deceptivity. it is not deceptivity to say different things that people don't agree and to say in a different style than they will accept. wise persons do this.

Knowledge is knowing the difference between a fart and a shart. Wisdom is understanding that prior certainty of the difference is impossible.
