That is only true if the dynamo theory is correct.  A flat object can exhibit magnetic properties the same as a spherical one, only the mechanism must differ.

3
The shape of the earth would have little effect on the behavior of magnetism.  What leads you to believe this is exclusive to a round earth?

There's a reason for that.  I support individual rights until they begin to infringe on the rights of others, which coincidently beating gays to keep them in the closet would tend to do.

I think you have your facts backwards.  A liberal society would allow a woman to make their own choices in their lives even if we might disagree with it rather than calling them witches and burning them so they will stop.

It wouldn't be that far of a stretch.

It was way better when homosexuals kept it to themselves for fear of a good beating. I mean I know that's not PC, but its a system that worked for thousands of years.  :-\

It worked fairly well on the slaves too.   ::)

So are we supposed to ignore the fact that the pressure gradient present in earth's atmosphere generates an upwards force on all objects?

Irrelevant.

That air pressure applies more force to the bottom of an object than it does to the top?

What if the object has a net positive upward acceleration relative to the earth's surface?

It's because of attention seeking.

The thing that annoys me about some gay people, not all, is that they want attention for being gay. It looks like that's what your friends doing.

If you're gay then why do you have to keep reinforcing that fact with people? It seems being gay makes you appear to be cool.

You say that like there are no heterosexuals that exibit this same behavior.   ::)

There are, it's human nature to want attention, but the attention they're getting isn't due to their sexual preference.

However, in a lot of cases it is.  A bunch of dudes standing around talking about their lastest romance or making lewd sexual gestures is no different other than being more accepted.

P.S. my elevation was only 3,300 feet so it's not like Denver or anything! The atmosphere would be thick!

Not as thick as if you were at an elevation of 6 feet.  Would you disagree?

Buoyancy pushes up on objects, gravity pulls down on them. Opposite forces.

I still argue that air pressure creates an opposing force to gravity, and thus cannot be the reason for it.

The 'direction' of bouyancy as a phenomenon is both meaningless and irrelevant when viewed as two opposing accelerations.  The same mechanism that causes helium to rise causes air to sink so the direction is merely a relativistic determination by the observer similar to lift and drag.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: How do we get weather
« on: May 29, 2012, 11:35:44 AM »
Can you explain a little more about what you mean by the mechanism Robby? Are you referring to what makes the tides rise and fall?

Yes, mechanism and observation is just another way to say cause and effect in essence.  Observation of the effect can have variations at times depending on the method used and what exactly it is that you are observing, but for the most part it is what it is.  If you and I stand side by side looking at the ocean, we are making the same observation, but may come to different conclusions as to what the cause is.

Again, not true. Light has mass, and travels at the speed of light.

Photons have energy and momentum, but rest mass is zero.

Therefor matter can reach the speed of light.

Incorrect.

Space, however, can travel faster than the speed of light.

Relative to what?

Your understanding of the world is as laughable as the fact that you couldn't get in a real military branch.

And what superior branch of service were you in?

On topic:

I was just really curious on what the tides would do on a flat earth.

Whether the earth is flat or spherical makes no difference on what the tides would do.  The question is the mechanism, not the observation.

The speed of light is not some magical speed limit that inhibits acceleration once you reach it.  You cannot exceed the speed of light because you can never reach the speed of light.

Flat Earth Debate / Re: Formation of Bodies disproves FET

Constant acceleration of matter is terminal; eventually it will be travelling at the speed of light, at which point it will cease accelerating.

This is where you are incorrect.

Speed is absolutely not irrelevant.

Speed has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Just what would be causing said deformation?

Acceleration.  I believe I have already mentioned this six times in this thread.

And so regularly?

Constant acceleration.

At such speed?

Speed is irrelevant.

This may not be possible, but I'll go ahead and throw it out there anyway.  When you go to your new replies there is a button on the right side that takes you to the last post in the thread.  Is there a way to put in a button that takes you to your last reply to the thread as opposed to going to the last page then cycling back pages until you find it?

Assuming that you have cookies turned on, that should be the default action of the new button to the right of the thread name.

Are you saying you are going to add it or that you have already added it?  If it is already there, I don't see it.

Is that the closest we'll see to an admission of error?

Quite the opposite. It's my deflection of Robbyj's attempt at switching topics to avoid my very relevant point, by illuminating a minor technicality.

I said the force of acceleration can cause deformation.  You said if that was the case the earth would be traveling faster than light.  I then said that it is impossible to reach the speed of light making it possible to continuously accelerate causing said deformation.  This is a minor technicality?

From a civil rights perspective, the only difference between being gay and being black is that you can hide being gay.  How would you feel if you were forced to paint yourself white and keep your true color a secret in order to join the corps that you love so dearly?  How would you feel if I told you that it is fine that you are black, just don't let me or my impressionable children see you being black?  How would you feel if I told you that marriage was between one white man and one white woman or one black man and one black woman and that whatever you and your white girlfriend do at home is your business but you do not qualify for marriage?
