Flat Earth Debate / Illogical inference
« on: June 15, 2018, 12:55:46 PM »
Here is some idiocy from the Q&A thread:
I tend toward the concept of a disc-shaped earth based on historic/mythic records and how well the shape loans itself to the rest of my model. The known extant is clearly a circle. It's certainly possible it exists as an infinite plane. I do not find other shapes as likely, but as I previously noted, it is impossible to know.

(a) Mythic or historical records are meaningless. The "ancients" didn't somehow possess geographical knowledge that now eludes us.
(b) The shape of the known area is utterly irrelevant to the shape of the actual area.

Flat Earth General / FE disproved by longitude
« on: February 27, 2018, 12:26:47 PM »
As if we really needed another bullet to the hole-riddled skull of FET, here's another one.

Navigation in longitude south of the equator by means of sextants and chronometers, as was used for a long period of time in the golden age of seafaring exploration, is totally unable to function on any flat earth maps because the calculations break down if longitude lines do not converge towards a point at 90 degrees south.
Yet amazingly, sailors were able to get to where they wanted to go.
I expect the FE'ers will blame wharpools, or "bendy time" or something.

Flat Earth General / Ice Maiden Expedition disproves flat earth (again)

See this:

Another mission that would have been impossible to pull off on the "conventional" flat earth model. Step forward, supporters of all north-at-the centre models, and explain how they managed to walk approximately 10,000 miles in 62 days.

Technical Support / Crappy recognition of when posts are made
« on: January 06, 2018, 05:59:04 AM »
My first post of the day today was greeted with the message "Your last post was less than 30 seconds ago". No it wasn't.
Waiting a bit and trying to post it later got the message "You've already submitted this post" (this always comes up in this situation) and yet going to look at the thread, the post isn't ever there.
Please fix this dumb system that doesn't detect things properly.

Suggestions & Concerns / Further uselessness of Q&A
« on: December 30, 2017, 12:24:45 PM »
The front page of the Q&A section currently stands at 12 topics moved elsewhere, and 5 left in place.
Adherence to the rules and strict moderation is really working well for it, eh?

Also to note: me debating in a thread resulted in it being split off into CN. Totallytacky debating in a thread resulted in it being moved in its entirety to General.
Nice, even, unbiased moderation from Reverse Cowgirl, there. Well done. Seriously, bravo.

Suggestions & Concerns / The uselessness of Q&A
« on: November 29, 2017, 02:14:24 PM »
I have given my opinions on how useless the Q&A section is, due to its restrictive rules, and that it would be far better to just let people ask questions in the General section. And maybe opinions are just opinions.
But here's some cold hard facts.

There are 17 threads on the first page of the Q&A section.
Of these, 9 have been moved by moderators for not following the rules
Out of the remaining 8 threads, 4 of them contain debate or derailing , going against the rules for Q&A.
Out of those 4, 2 have had SCG step in and warn posters to stick to the rules.
Leaving a grand total of FOUR THREADS which actually adhere to what the section is meant to be for.
And one of those has received no responses in the six days since it was posted.
This means just 3 threads - that's about 17% of the total - have actually achieved what they were meant to.

It's a complete waste of time having that section.

Flat Earth General / Flat Earth Conference - funny how nobody was there...
« on: November 20, 2017, 11:12:07 AM »
https://www.space.com/38828-flat-earthers-first-conference.html?utm_content=buffer0e107&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

So there was this massive Flat Earth event, but strangely, nobody from this forum hosted a talk or was invited as a special guest, or as far as I can tell, even went there. That does seem a bit odd if John Davis, Master Lord Willmire, Tom Bishop etc. are such leading lights in the movement, like they'd have us believe...

Flat Earth General / Longitude of the South Pole
« on: November 11, 2017, 12:00:18 PM »
In FET's most common model, with South at the edge for no reason, at what longitude do the FE'ers believe the spot generally identified as the South Pole to be?

Flat Earth General / Another example of trash used as "evidence"
« on: October 28, 2017, 04:45:12 PM »
I recommend you watch this video first.

Perhaps This will be disappeared at the next, for this reason I want to shortly explain: There is neither satellites, nor planets and such as things.  we can not say about anything we saw in this world "this is absolutely like this".

This is ridiculous, because any of us can purchase a telescope, go outside, set it up and observe the planets directly. And we will see that they don't actually look like this. The reason they look like this in the video is because the footage is out of focus and taken through very turbulent atmosphere. I have a telescope, and I don't see this. I'd take the telescope back to the shop if I did.
Intikam, if you're going to waste our time, do it with something that can't immediately be checked.

Flat Earth Debate / If the earth is flat, what shape is it?
« on: October 17, 2017, 11:46:43 AM »
Assuming, for the sake of argument, that the earth is a plane of some kind... what shape is it?
A disc?
A square?
A pentagon?
Something else?

Please post your answers below, but only do so if you can present a logical argument to back up your choice.

Flat Earth Debate / Addressing problems raised in Q&A
« on: October 05, 2017, 11:26:22 AM »
I can't answer this in its original thread because it would be labelled as debating (although there's already debate going on in the thread).
Hi, I've just had a read through the FAQ and I have some questions regarding the answers given.

1 The Bedford Level Experiment
You say the experiment was performed many times, however I can only find one or two examples of the experiment successfully showing a straight path between the points. There is evidence of a curve not as harsh as the RE theory suggests, but that seems to corroborate evidence of light refraction in the air density as you move away from earth. Are there more freely available works that can be read to further disprove RE theory? I cannot rely on senses as it has been proven many times that ones own senses are not always a reliable source of information.

2 Faking space travel
This is quite a simple question. During the 60s the industrial revolution had long since taken hold, mechanical technology was in its prime, and industrial development was an all time high following the war, Space craft should have been well within the realms of possibility at the time. By contrast, digital technology was still in its infancy, recorded video was only starting to take hold, let alone digital manipulation. Occams Razor suggests it is far more likely for us to have actually gone to space than faked an entire space program. My question is, by what means could the various agencies have managed to fake their programs for decades, and still receive funding even today?

3 Southern Hemiplane
Where is it? In your explanation of the sun and moon it is mentioned that the seasons are defined by their position relative to the North Pole. I understand the North Pole being in the centre, however the South raises more questions, Is 'south' and infinite number of positions around the wall? Or is it a defined point on the disc?

4 Gravity
What is it in Einsteins theory of relativity that says we can accelerate forever without ever reaching the speed of light? If C was infinite this would hold true, however it is not, C is a measurable, absolute value of ~3x108m/s. As we approach C we cannot accelerate further. The energy used to accelerate is transferred to mass, allowing the earth, sun, moon and all its inhabitants to reach an infinitely large mass. With this in mind, we will still reach a velocity infinitely close to c, but we will no longer be accelerating. How can this anomaly be explained?

5 Flights
In the final section it is mentioned that flights circumnavigate the north pole. With a flat earth it makes far more commercial sense to fly a direct line between destinations. Current flight paths align with a straight line path between destinations on a round earth. Translating that route to a flat earth would make the flight considerably longer than necessary. A flight from Sydney to Buenos Aires currently flies directly over Antarctica, resulting in a flight near the circumference of the disc, why would they do that when it would make far more business sense to fly directly over the north pole given the considerably shorter flight time.

6 Ice wall and Antarctica
What is protecting the Ice Wall? There have been multiple expeditions to the south pole (Commercial expeditions are available now), yet none of these expeditions have reported a wall. Is there an allure to the wall that when people see it, they are bound to go beyond, never to return? If this was common knowledge, surely at least one of the many expeditions since the first in 1911 would have a survivor reporting the presence of a wall.

I appreciate this is a forum for questions and not debate, so clear, concise answers with no room for speculation would be appreciated, otherwise that forces the hand of one to debate.

Thanks

1. Either you take that as a valid source or not. I'm not sure how to help you here. We, here, are very much interested in our own senses.

2. Space agencies make governments look good lots of times. NASA receives a relatively small budget yearly. I disagree with your assertion that it would somehow be simpler to aim a rocket at a certain point allegedly 200 thousands plus miles away rather than busting out a camera and filming on set. Another idea is that they've done so well at it that they have the people funding them fooled.

3. The south pole is all around the edge. To put it more logically, there is no geographical south "pole", but there is a magnetic one.

4. My model takes care of this problem. You're right. The acceleration is linear, when it should not be. Nothing about relativity says you can keep adding 9.8 to 9.8 and never reach c. I assert that the entire universe is accelerating upward at this rate. It's at this scale where relativity breaks down. This can be seen with the alleged expansion of the universe accelerating objects apart at velocities greater than c.

5. On a globe, there are no straight lines. Give that some thought.

6. It is purely speculation that the land might go on for awhile before an actual edge, assuming the land stops at all. There are variations of FET which include an infinite Earth, though I don't subscribe to this idea.

1. Most people performing the Bedford Level Experiment have an agenda, i.e. they expect to see flatness. Most roundies can't be bothered to perform it because they already understand how other abundant evidence renders it unnecessary. A flattist who doesn't get the answer they want will keep very, very quiet about the result.

2. Someone cited the effects in 2001 A Space Odyssey. Yes, they're good, but they're nowhere near as realistic (or consistent) as the footage from NASA and the Russian space programme of the time, plus there are some things that are shown in space agency footage that there was literally no way to convincingly fake at the time.

3. This directly contradicts the following facts: there is an axis of stellar rotation directly above the point agreed as the geographic south pole. That there is an agreed point labelled as the geographic south pole also contradicts it - why that point? Why not one 4000 miles away round the rim? It contradicts that mapping of Antarctica has been consistent from every person involved and suggests that all cartographers are complete idiots.

4. Upwards acceleration is easily disproved by the easily measurable evidence that the strength of gravity varies from place to place. If the speed of acceleration varied from place to place, the earth would be in pieces by now.

5. No straight lines on a globe? Using a pathetic semantic argument doesn't address the question. Let's address it again using "great circle" instead of "straight line". Oops, suddenly you can't provide a logical answer...

6. The infinite plane model has been disproved by trans-polar expeditions and flights, and exploration in general.

Flat Earth Debate / Celestial movements
« on: July 22, 2017, 04:17:13 PM »
Hi FE'ers, please can you answer my question: why is the angular distance between any two given stars always constant? If there are celestial gears they have to - by definition - move relative to each other. In the models without celestial gears, their apparent angular distance would be affected by perspective.
Explanation please?

Flat Earth General / Name the lunar lifeforms: poll
« on: April 10, 2016, 04:59:08 AM »
This poll is to determine, in a democratic manner, what users of the forum would like to refer to the postulated lunar lifeforms as. I have included all the options which were suggested in my post (even the obviously non-serious ones), plus terms which I am aware have been used in the past.

Flat Earth General / Name the shramps!
« on: April 07, 2016, 11:09:35 AM »
One of my posts was recently obliterated because I dared to use the term "Moonshramp" to describe the bioluminescent organisms which FEers propose live on the moon. I believe James referred to them as "Lunas". But it occurs to me we have no formally agreed name for these creatures, by which we can refer to them without fear of punishment.
Therefore I propose we select a name by the most democratic means possible: a poll.
In this thread, please post suggestions for what you'd like the official name of these creatures to be. When people have had a reasonable opportunity to add suggestions, I will collate these into a poll to see what is most popular.

I'm sticking with Moonshramp as my preferred term.

Suggestions & Concerns / Unreasonable moderation
« on: April 06, 2016, 02:15:22 PM »
This post, which was added as a description of a FE theory which several people genuinely propose as an explanation for moonlight, was moved to CN:
http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=66375.msg1771511#msg1771511
The post was pertinent to the thread it was in, it is accurate and truthful, and moving it was inappropriate and clearly an example of discriminatory moderation.

Flat Earth Debate / Disproof of DET via neutrino experiments
« on: February 11, 2016, 01:12:06 PM »
Neutrinos from a source have been detected emerging in parts of the world other than where DET predicts they should emerge. DET only works for travel across the surface of earth: it fails completely with particles following a path that travels significantly beneath the surface.
I should also add that the existence of a horizon at sea also disproves DET. I can only imagine how devastating neutrinos at sea would be to the theory.

Suggestions & Concerns / A concern and a suggestion

I have a concern. Jroa is telling people off for not following the rules of the Q&A section, then not following them himself. I can post examples if required. I don't think moderators should do that.
Here is also a suggestion: remove Jroa's mod status, or make him subject to the bans other people get for similar infractions.

Suggestions & Concerns / Jroa consigns legitimate debate thread to CN
« on: April 12, 2015, 06:03:10 PM »
I started to split posts that needed to be moved to CN, but then realized that most of the posts in this thread were either low content or otherwise inappropriate, so, I am moving the whole thing.

This is in reference to the thread "Dual earth theory pounded by Einstein's iron fist".
Jroa moved the entire four page thread, with the excuse above. However, at least the first two pages are legitimate debate, and what's more, it's debate that stays more or less on topic. I would go as far as to say the majority of threads still resident in Q&A have strayed more off topic than this did (including the one about Meteorites which is home to Vauxhall's turtle sex claims). This is not moderation, it's jroa doing what he wants on a personal whim.
I suggest you go look at the thread and see what you think. I would imagine most of you will agree that moving it to CN in entirety was abysmal moderation. Do bear in mind that if jroa comes back and says it was the right thing to do, I will choke him on an enormous list of other threads from Debate and Q&A which are way further derailed, and ask for an explanation why they weren't moved. (Not that I expect him to actually give an explanation - but to see him give weak excuses humiliates him just as much).

Suggestions & Concerns / Jroa's hypocritical Q&A posting
« on: April 10, 2015, 12:29:35 PM »
Following the idea of the flat earth map, how is it that people have been to the South Pole? What if one were to walk south until reaching the end of the world? Wouldn't the end be the South Pole? Because if that were the South Pole, we know there is no 'drop' there.

Make sure to bring extra socks for your expedition.  I am fairly sure it would be very cold there.

Did you know that when it gets cold enough, the air that you breath will turn into a liquid and even a solid?  Sounds like a pretty inhospitable place to me.

This doesn't answer any of the questions. How dare you lecture the rest of us on inappropriate posting in Q&A. Shame on you.

The Lounge / Karl Popper
« on: March 31, 2015, 12:33:17 PM »
According to Karl Popper, an idea can only be considered a scientific theory if it can be falsified. When a theory is presented it is not only necessary to give the supporting evidence, it must also be stated what evidence would falsify it. What evidence could falsify Dual Earth Theory?

Suggestions & Concerns / Spethial Allowance for Sandokhan
« on: March 25, 2015, 02:07:02 PM »
There is a thread in FE Q&A asking for FE opinions about Sandokhan.
http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?reportsent;topic=63216.msg1673366#msg1673366

In this thread, Sandokhan himself is posting numerous items of no relevance.
If the two remaining "moderators" wish to demonstrate that they're not biased and idle, then this is the perfect opportunity.

Flat Earth General / Tomorrow's sunrise/sunset
« on: March 19, 2015, 11:57:47 AM »
Tomorrow is the spring equinox in the north, and the autumn equinox in the south. At that time, under RET or TET, a plane bisecting the earth's axis of rotation would be at 90o to a line drawn from the earth to the sun. The result: the day and night lengths are the same everywhere and the sun is seen to rise due east and set due west from every place.
How do flat earthers explain the sun appearing to rise and set at those points, considering in FET people in the northj should see it rise in the southeast and those in the south should see it rise in the northeast?
