Philosophy, Religion & Society / Is it possible..
« on: December 27, 2010, 07:08:00 AM »
This is an odd concept that I've been thinking about lately. Is it possible for us to conceive of something that is physically impossible? You can talk about unicorns and flying spaghetti monsters, but neither of those things are physically impossible. I've been trying to think of something which could never exist under any circumstances, but I haven't been able to. I'm not talking about abstract concepts here like married bachelors or square circles. Those are just issues with language and naming.

I've developed feelings for this girl I know. She's 19 and married with 2 kids. I get really jealous around her and it's really a downer. I know she sees me as just a friend. Bleh what should I do.

Flat Earth General / The reason why FET is implausible
« on: December 03, 2010, 05:59:22 AM »
Flat earth theorists set a claim (the earth is flat) and set out to prove that it is true at any cost. We find the same line of thinking amongst religious philosophers. They are not willing to observe any counter evidence as being plausible. They regard their theory as being infallible and this is not a scientific way to go about things.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Miracles
« on: December 03, 2010, 05:07:04 AM »
Do you think miracles occur? I often talk to creationists and it seems like every one of them has had a miracle experience. Of course it's always something which could occur within the bounds of reality as we know it. No one ever talks about how their house turned into gold when they were tight on money.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Knowing when you're wrong
« on: November 13, 2010, 04:20:23 AM »
This idea scares me sometimes; the possibility that I might be wrong about a certain world view or concept that I have which seems to me to be completely valid. In the past I've held views about certain topics and I felt that I had an unshakable position only to find out that I was in fact wrong about it.

So the topic of this thread is to figure out how to know whether we are right about something. There is another problem which arises and that is perception. We might be completely valid in making a judgment about something because our perception of it is a certain way. But if you look at it from a different perspective, you might draw a very different conclusion.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Evil
« on: October 27, 2010, 12:15:23 AM »
I was thinking about Christianity and evil recently. Just wondering if you can tell me if this is right or not.

If god is infinitely good, how is it that he created a world in which it is possible for evil to exist? The free will argument isn't sufficient to refute this because everything originated from god supposedly. If God is infinitely good and all powerful, then it would be impossible for him to create a world in which evil could exist. In fact, evil would be a non-issue because it just wouldn't exist at all. To me it just seems like the buck stops here.

The Lounge / Social phobia
« on: October 14, 2010, 12:42:30 AM »
Dunno if this is the right section to put this in, so please move it if not. Thanks.

Basically I'm just wondering how one would go about dealing with social phobias, and self esteem problems. I have symptoms of several different personality disorders, bi-polarism is among them. Although I don't think I have one disorder that is completely full blown. I'm asking this here because I know quite a few of you are very intelligent despite some of the trolling you do. I've only recently started making an attempt at fixing these problems, but I've found that I'm not going to be able to do it myself. I've already missed out on so much in life because of this problem. What would you recommend?
