The Lounge / Basic Human Rights
« on: August 16, 2006, 10:18:35 AM »
This post goes out to NorthRider for the most part, but anyone is welcome. I was originally going to post on Woman's Rights but why stop there? this is about Human Rights.

http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html

Alright, as you probably know i'm an American. Let me specify. I'm a US citizen living in Alabama, a conservative Southern Sate. born here, raised here, and collegially educated here.

Having said that, i will probably sound bias. Why? This is the only life i know, and some of my rights i probably take for granted. Since this site has ppl from all around the globe I hope to enlighten and be enlightened to Human Rights outside my countries soil.

I have the freedom of speech. I can say any vile disgusting thing i want to say, and however much ppl may disagree with me, I do have the right to say it. I definitely hate bigots, racists, and sexists; but they have the right to their opinion. And they can voice it without being arrested.
In short, I have the right to porn (Yeah!), even though some ppl don't like it. Sadly i don't think this is the case everywhere else.

I also have the freedom of Religion. I can worship any god i choose to. Whether it be a conservative god, a radical new god, or no god @ all. The coolest part about that is if someone persecutes me for having whatever faith, they can be prosecuted. You can not discriminate over religion or you can get sued. If my Christian boss overworked me (an atheist) and not my co-worker (a Christian) due to being atheist, the government would put a stop to that.
In short, I can have any religious view i want with no retaliation. Sadly i don't think this is the case elsewhere.

Lastly Women's Rights...
In this country, everyone is equal; (@ least in theory) whether that individual is: black, white, male, or female. It isn't just the rich white land owners that have rights. It is everyone. Women do not have a dress code. Men do not have a dress code. There are laws against public nudity, but as long as you are wearing pants you're Ok. Women can also vote alongside men. Women can drive cars alongside men.

There is no such thing as an "honor killing". If you kill a woman you are killing someone. Not a second class citizen. You do not have the right to stone your wife to death.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honor_killing
And i'm not even going to go into genital mutilation. That is just pure evil.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_genital_mutilation

Discuss this however you would like. I'm just curious why ALL people do not want the rights that the UN says you should have. And i'm curious why anyone would allow a government or church to take these rights from them.

And this is not an oversized sense of entitlement. These are basic Human rights.

*Note that i did not bring any religion into this. I never said: Muslims are stupid, Buddhists are wrong, nor Christianity for all. I also never said that the US is right and everyone should be like them. I couldn't care less about what god you pray to (or don't). I could care less if you have a president, king, queen, dictator, or Parliament. I could care less if you are Capitalist, Socialist, or Communist. I'm merely pointing out that not all ppl are born with the rights i have. And I feel these rights should be true for all humans regardless of nationality, religion, or sex.

Flat Earth Q&A / Myth Busters
« on: July 17, 2006, 02:13:45 PM »
IDK about you but i believe this would make a GREAT myth busters episode.

They use back yard science to prove and disprove things all the time. I wonder what Low-Budget means they would use to prove/disprove the earth is round/flat.

Just think. it would have to be:

a) something you could make with your hands.
b) something on a tight budget
c) something clever that used applied science.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / The Bible and Science
« on: July 11, 2006, 01:24:00 PM »
** I am not poking fun of any religion, nor am i insulting the core of your beliefs **

I hear the Bible being brought up a few times. FE'ers are Christian based i am assuming. (i could be assuming wrong.) Coming from a highly Christian upbringing, turned atheist, i'm wondering how the Bible can be seen as a Scientific text.

The Bible is a great book. It has been reproduced easily more times than any other publication. It's social effects are vast, and for some, answers questions that can't be answered by science.

Politically it gives a church that controls people and gives them structure and foundation for society

Mentally it gives a higher power to answer to, and ultimately controlling ones actions for and against the fellow man.

Historically it is an account on what happened on Earth for thousands of years.

I'm a firm believer that the world is a better, more organized place because of the Bible. Just imagine if the average person didn't have anyone to answer to, and couldn't be held accountable for anything. This can be said for most all writings of Faith.

Having said that, and firmly believing:
I can not for the life of me see how the Bible can be used as Scientific fact. I can't apply what i have learned in my Calculus book to the psychology of humans. I apply Math when Math is needed. I apply psychology where psychology is needed. I apply history when history is needed. I don't pull out the US History book when i need to know the density of lead. So i can't see pulling out a socio-political-religious book out when i need answers to the physical world around me.

The Bible was written thousands of years ago. And whether you believe it is Divinely inspired or not, you can't refute the fact that it was scribed by man. Interpreted by man. Reproduced by man. And past on from generation to generation by man. Since it has been in the hands of man and men are sometimes wrong, I can't see believing this few thousand old document as Scientific fact.

ie. Lightning is caused by static electricity in the clouds. But the ppl in the Biblical ERA believed Lightning came directly from God and showed his wrath. Now whether or now God created the storm itself for whatever purpose is irrelevant. The ppl saw the lightning as coming directly from God, where as today we see it coming from a storm.

How can a ppl so ignorant of today's modern day Science write and reproduce a book of science when their faith was not based on scientific fact? And how come ppl continue to use a religious text as scientific fact, when it doesn't follow or support our modern day findings?

Flat Earth Q&A / celestial bodies
« on: July 07, 2006, 08:08:40 AM »
Before Newton invented our modern day physics, it was a common belief that Celestial bodies behaved differently than matter here on Earth. This is true in the case of Galileo when he first saw the moons of Jupiter in an orbit with our very first telescopes.

The basis of Newtonian physics is gravity, which FE do not believe exists. Rather than try to argue over a conspiracy theory OR an all encompassing theory of Gravity, i pose a few simple questions:

Objects in motion tend to stay in motion, unless acted on by a force. Other than non-existent gravity, what keeps other moons, such as Jupiter's, orbiting a planet? What force keeps these moons from flying straight, rather than orbiting as we have observed?

Also, other than non-existant gravity what keeps a planets atmosphere in place? I understand that an ice wall can keep in water, but how does it hold our atmosphere against the vacuum of space and solar wind? And what force keeps Jupiter's atmosphere in place, when it is round not flat?

Why do most other planets have orbiting moons, yet in the FE system our moon travels in a completely different fashion than other planets every other planet in our system?

If celestial bodies (planets, moons, stars) are for the most part round, Why isn't Earth?

Since celestial bodies orbit, from time to time their paths intersect, causing an eclipse, both lunar and solar. How in a FE orbit do we have predictable solar and lunar eclipses? Also explain the phases of the moon.

**These questions are posed in a polite manner and without criticism. If you are to debate for OR against, i ask that you do the same.**
