Shamelessly stolen from another forum :)

Hewlett-Packard is undergoing a massive overhaul. CEO Léo Apotheker is going to turn HP into another IBM.

ie: Focus on the enterprise, Govt, and commercial markets.
 => Cloud, software, and solutions.

 How will they do that?

(1) Kill off WebOS platform.

(2) Sell or spin off Personal Systems Group (PSG).
(PSG is responsible for consumer and business client systems like desktops and notebooks.)

(3) Acquire cloud search-software specialist: Autonomy for around US$10 Billion

If you want it in more official terms...

Big changes ahead. After all HP makes nearly 20 percent of the world's PC's. Not that they will be missed, HP consumer stuff sucks (the business gear is good though)

Now I know there are only a few of us, but still, in my current drunken state I would dearly love to meet some of you. Vindictus and Parsifal are the ones I remember as of this moment, any other Sydney regulars keen for a meetup?

The Lounge / FES Alcoholic Beverage Thread
« on: July 15, 2011, 07:00:06 AM »
Aside from the Drinking thread in RM, I thought a more serious thread was in order for the discussion of alcoholic beverages.
Here's my rundown of what I like.

Beer: Developed such a taste for beer recently I drink it all the time. Prefer darker beers, Toohey's Old is the only stuff widely available around here but keen to try some others. Guinness and other stouts are still a bit much for me, maybe one day I will like it. Carlton Draught is probably my non-dark beer of choice, tastes nice and malty out of a stubbie. Not that keen on pale ale's in general, and most light beers don't taste as good.

Wine: Wine is pretty expensive per drink and doesn't have the fun of spirits so I tend to avoid, however cheap wine sold in casks is the most common drink on campus, and at $10 for 4L of cheap wine it gets you pretty ripped.

Whiskey: Love a bit of Jack Daniels but haven't tried a whole lot else

Scotch: Expensive, only tried two or three expensive varieties and can't afford a whole bottle myself

Bourbon: Definitely my favourite spirit, definitely drink unmixed. Maker's Mark and Gentleman Jack are both excellent.

Rum: I wish I could bring myself to enjoy it but I really don't like it. Best I have had is probably Mount Gay, mixed with coke it was pretty drinkable. Not keen on the Australian Bundaberg rum, its pretty rough.

Vodka: Wouldn't touch the stuff straight, but great for mixing. Russian Standard is the usual for me, cheap and decent, though clubs and bars all use Smirnoff Red Label which is pretty meh. Some of the premixes in cans are delicious, particularly lemonade or citrus varieties.

Gin: Had a few cheap gins, surprisingly good with coke and lime and in cocktails but apart from that its filthy filthy stuff. I believe I had Gordons last time which was definitely on the cheap side

Tequila: Is the devil

Other Spirits: Don't mind a few liqueurs, particularly curacao.

The Lounge / The Anti-Powerpoint Party

I am a member, sign up today! Quite a bit of truth behind the cause, Powerpoint is a massive waste of time.

The quality of posts in the Suggestions and Concerns board is frankly appalling. I notice on the first page alone I count no less than 6 (some now locked) stupid threads made in an obvious attempt to troll.
I will say this has been mostly a trend started by PizzaPlanet and continued by others in recent weeks, and I would just like to see something done about it. Few legitimate concerns are raised here anymore, and this is one of them. A stronger enforcement of rules is needed in S&C

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Living together before marriage
« on: June 08, 2011, 05:48:45 AM »
Today I was at my girlfriends house and her brother (23) was talking to her mum about buying a house, as he intends to marry his girlfriend. They are a deeply Catholic family as is her brothers girlfriends family. But while this happened I asked my GF if they would live together for a while before getting married, and apparently that isn't a very Catholic thing to do, and I mentioned I would feel quite weird not living with someone (i.e. her  ::) ) for a while before popping the question, that seems REALLY weird to me. I said that it's what just about all couples do.
Anyway on the train trip home I thought about how weird it would be seeing as she probably wouldn't want to live with me until we were married. I googled statistics and was VERY surprised. Only about 60% or so of couples live together before marriage, and those who do stand a much much greater chance of being divorced later on. I thought this would have been some Christian research nonsense but nope it was all genuine studies.

Anyone else surprised by that? Would you prefer to live with your partner before marriage?

Check out my bruises/marks.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Shopping search engine?
« on: December 10, 2010, 04:25:50 AM »
Does anyone know of some kind of search engine to search for shit to buy? Kinda sick of fishing through results from google to find the ones which are selling and those that are just information. There used to be an option on the left to say "Show more shopping results" but its gone now :(

I jumped... at the ball/a guy. We both hit the floor pretty hard. I wouldn't have gotten the yellow if he didn't have a whine about it.

I am now nursing my somewhat sore elbow.

What are your thoughts? I think it could have a good impact and possibly result in cheaper Macbooks.

Arts & Entertainment / The Similar Music Thread
« on: September 14, 2010, 02:55:11 AM »
Admittedly, this is only for my own benefit, however I will help anyone else out if needed.

Basically, I routinely find songs I really like however it is difficult to put them into genre's or search similar artists. Perhaps you could help me?

I have 3 particular songs/genres that you may be able to help me with

1. Space music stuff. Not typical new age atmospheric stuff, like this (my favourite songs atm)

Hard to define. I fucking hate telling people I like "new age" making them think I just like boring nature sounds, but I also hate saying "trance/chillout/techno/electronica" because then I sound like a moronic teen bopper. For anyone similarly interested the entire album is free to download from his website (I own the physical album)

Some kind of guitar/trance mashup? I liked Mike Oldfield's album The Songs of Distant Earth which was recommended to me.

3. and
Don't sound as good as the ones I ripped from the game files but yeah. This is a nice combination of the space music of John Stanford and some nice new age relaxation stuff. Only short songs however :(

Fire away, and I'll help anyone else if I can.

The Lounge / Police and weapons
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:59:43 PM »
I am watching a documentary at the moment in which two British cops go to the US and spend a month with the cops over there. It's quite interesting to see the differences, particularly in an officers armaments.
Apprently just 2% of the British police are actually armed. One of the British cops had never fired a weapon. The other interesting fact that I did not know was that apparently the US cops get provided with ammunition but use their own firearms, at least in the county of the documentary.
I just found that strange. What are your thoughts? I find it crazy that the British cop hadn't even fired a gun and just 2% are armed. What the hell are they supposed to do if they get shot at?

The Lounge / Yet another police thread

Now in Australia this is old news, but no single news article has ever angered me more. This still makes me fume.

Here is the video. The assault in question is the flying headbutt at approx 50 secs.

That was straight out assault on the police officer and he was acquitted. None of this bullshit about protecting his father.
