I believe this is the first American military action in my lifetime that I've actually been in support of.

The Lounge / Scheduling
« on: August 30, 2011, 03:19:23 PM »
I'm mainly just whining, but suggestions are welcome too.

I start my senior year in high school tomorrow. The school counselor royally fucked my schedule.

As of now, it says I'm taking:

1 Business Math

K, so, I thought I needed the business credit that Business Math provided, but apparently not cuz Journalism is first period, and because I'm the editor, they told me that they were transferring me to that instead.

2 English 12

I signed up for College English. Apparently there was some question about my ability to receive college credit because of my grade last year, but my ACT score saved it, so I'm good now...? But still taking regular English? Wat...? I know I'll miss having the teacher of regular English, but that's no reason not to live up to my potential.

3 Guitar

I don't fucking know how to play the guitar. This is the period that other seniors are taking Physics. I didn't sign up for Physics cuz I thought I'd like to take College Bio instead, but the counselor decided to put me in neither and substitute it with... music. Does he think I'm retarded?

4 US Government

Fine, whatever, it's required.

5 Creative Writing, but only for the first semester

I would greatly enjoy this, but I've taken the class before, and I've heard of this particular class taken twice has put people in danger of not graduating. And why no second semester plan? I'm pretty sure this is the period that College Bio is, but, y'know, I'm not good enough for science, remember? The arts are much better for me to get into college.

6 College Algebra first semester, then Trigonometry second

The fuck? I didn't sign up for either of these; am I missing math credits? Even if I am, I'd rather not try to take a college course in one semester, especially since math isn't my strong suit.

7 Spanish 4

Cool, fine, I'm actually supposed to be higher, but since they don't offer anything higher, I'm happy with this. I do get my old teacher back that was laid off last year and replaced with Rosetta Stone and this other unexperienced teacher, so yay.

8 Radio Broadcast

I didn't sign up for this, but I guess the teacher requested me cuz I've been in the class before and the staff is really new this year. Whatever, it's just one more year, and it's hard to find good News Directors.

Ugh. I guess this will all be sorted out tomorrow, but I kind of wish that wasn't how I had to spend my first day. Then again, since I'm indecisive as fuck, I started thinking that maybe having two arts would really boost my GPA, or at least maintain it at average. Really the only thing that has to be fixed is Journalism, cuz if I'm not there, there is no paper. And maybe having College Algebra in one semester, because that may be too big of a workload for me. And I'm pretty sure I need a Physical Education credit... Aaaagh, FES, halp.

It was supposed to be a 7-day ban, as announced in his ban notice and a moderator's post in S&C.
PP is banned for a week

After its duration was supposed to expire, it has been extended to one month with no explanation provided. Likely, there is no explanation at all.

Fix it.

What do you think and why?

EDIT: After thinking a bit longer, I chose neither, keeping in mind that the artist could also be the viewer.

The Lounge / Collegey stuff
« on: May 30, 2011, 12:40:34 PM »
Cuz most of y'all are older and more experienced and junk, and probably have some good opinions.

I have seven schools in mind to apply to- one fallback (Western State College of Colorado), five in-the-middles (CU Boulder, U of Oregon at Eugene, U of NM at Albuquerque, U of WA at Seattle, and U of KY at Lexington), and one reach (UNC Chapel Hill). Probably will be aiming for a psych PhD.

I'd like to have more scores where I want them before I apply, and I'd like to start applying this summer. ACT is good, but I'm taking it again on June 11, cuz the test I got good scores on was without writing. SAT I'd like to improve, but the only summer date is next Saturday (the fourth), and obviously all there is left is standby testing, which is HOLY FRICK $88 and won't guarantee me a seat.

So, a] should I standby SAT and b] are those good schools?

I'm going to one of his concerts in January in the city of Aaron's university, and will be missing school to do so. Discuss the magnitude your jealousy. Also, if Aaron doesn't wanna go, there is one free ticket. I suggest y'all fight to the death for the possibility of my considering giving it to you rather than a friend of mine.

What's it like, yo? What's a nice, mid-sized city with opportunities for good education and low tuition and living costs for foreigners?

« on: August 24, 2010, 12:54:37 PM »
1) Find a vintage portrait, preferably black and white and preferably of someone attractive. Perhaps a pinup.
2) Find a cartoon character you enjoy. Stick it creepishly behind the portrait.
3) Tint the image to the main color of the cartoon. Mine is red, but teal would work quite nicely and give an underwater effect.
4) Write your name in the same color in a corner.

Tada! You're done. Post pics.

EDIT: If anyone is having trouble getting started, use these:

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Pansexuality
« on: August 22, 2010, 06:16:17 PM »
What is it exactly? It seems to me that there are three popular beliefs that contrast vastly:

1) That it is whoring yourself out to male, female, and every oddity in between.

2) That it's interchangeable with bisexuality.

3) That it's having little to no preference of gender or physical attractiveness, but rather being drawn to the person themselves, sex merely being a bonus of love.

??? Which one is it? A combo? Or perhaps something else entirely? Let's discuss.

I remember someone here claiming that orientation...Davito, maybe?

Philosophy, Religion & Society / What's wrong with selfishness?
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:32:31 AM »
Christians always talk about how they don't pray for material goods, or for God to intervene directly and make his/her life better. I always hear this; that they pray for the "strength" or "willpower" to make it through life's challenges. Isn't this still a selfish act? Aren't they still asking for something? And to be honest, I'd trade a stack of money for a healthy dose of willpower any given day. Do any Christians have any comments on this?

What is wrong with selfishness?

Irrelevant. Make a new thread if you want to discuss that.

Arts & Entertainment / TED Talks
« on: August 16, 2010, 11:26:50 AM »
Does anyone watch TED Talks? I've seen a few (thanks to Aaron and a writer friend of mine), and they're remarkably insightful.

Specifically, I've seen the ones done by Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Ken Robinson, and Vilayanur Ramachandran.

If you haven't seen any, watch these. If you have, post what you've seen. Either way, opinions are wanted.

There's a thing on the back to record donations with; does anyone know if it is I or the phlebotomist who is meant to do that?
