Flat Earth Debate / The flat earth model isn't scientific. Period.
« on: April 24, 2017, 06:27:15 AM »
Science is all about making models of the universe based on observations, and then trying as hard as possible to DISPROVE them... unfortunetly, flat earthers make a model based on an observation, (the horizon looks flat!) immediately proclaiming it to be true, and then completely ignoring evidence that disproves it and then start desperately scrambling for evidence that somehow "proves" the flat earth model.

Probably my favourite part about the flat earth model is the unexplained forces that apparently pull the moon and the sun in circles above the flat earth. A lot of flat earthers will just say "hurr durr magic from gawd" but some admittedly smarter flat earthers will claim that these celestial bodies are being pulled around through a material called "Aether" otherwise known as "Quintessence". Not only has Aether not shown any evidence of its existence in all of human history, flat earthers fail to explain why or how it pulls on celestial bodies that are 37 kilometres across and presumably have a lot of weight. In short, watching a flat earther talk about this made up stuff called "Aether" is like watching a train derail itself and explode in slow motion.

Fabricating evidence is another trend for our flat earth friends: For example, flat earthers will constantly rail on and on about how the horizon apparently rises to eye-level; IT DOESN'T. This can be proven by using a theodolite which will determine the location of your eye-level compared to the location of the horizon. At plane altitudes the horizon will be about 3.5 degrees below eye-level... not noticeable without a theodolite, but definitely measurable with one.

Also, when boats disappear over the horizon, flat earthers will ramble incoherently about how you can allegedly take out a telescope and the boat will appear again... this is a LIE. Binoculars, telescopes (or really any magnification device) will make objects in front of you bigger... they don't allow you to suddenly see things that aren't there. That's a magical property that telescopes don't have, get over it.

How far do you think Genetic engineering should go before it becomes unethical? Like designer babies, or getting rid of the malaria in mosquitoes... what are your thoughts?

Flat Earth Debate / Axial Precession
« on: April 10, 2017, 02:23:53 AM »
The northern and southern celestial poles (yes there is a southern celestial pole) change position in the constellations by approximately 1 degree every 72 years.

It is caused by a gradual wobbling of the earth because of the gravity from the massive, distant sun, and the relatively nearby moon. How does this work on a flat earth where there is no gravity?

To put it simply, it doesn't. Because the earth is not flat and gravity does exist.

Flat Earth Debate / Eye Level
« on: April 09, 2017, 10:19:16 PM »
Doo doo doooo, dum dee dumm... It's time to finish the flat earth debate once and for all.

Eye level. A typical flat earth claim is that the horizon always remains at eye level.

This is simply untrue.

Behold...! This is an image taken from ground-level with a theodolite app on someones iPhone 7. Notice that the center of the red square (which represents eye level) is on the horizon perfectly even though it's on an angle. That is to be expected from someone on the ground.

BUT. In a plane at an altitude of 38,805 feet the eye level point (green square and cross hair) is HIGHER than the horizon which is lined up with the center point of the image. (The white cross hair)

The angle drop between the green eye level cross hair and the white horizon cross hair is 3.4 degrees... EXACTLY the amount it should be for a sphere with a radius of 3,959 miles.

I'm so happy to say this...

Flat Earth Debate / Transit of Venus
« on: April 09, 2017, 02:23:48 AM »
Even if the Earth WERE flat, it definitely isn't the center of the universe. There are numerous times when Venus transits across the face of the sun so it's obvious Venus doesn't orbit the Earth. So, if everything in the solar system orbits the sun then, does the solar system look like this?

Well, this doesn't make sense does it? All the other planets are round orbiting a round sun and yet the earth is flat AND orbiting AND being under gravitational pulls without turning into a sphere? HMMMMMMM.

Busted.

Flat Earth Debate / A challenge to all flat earthers
« on: April 06, 2017, 06:17:05 AM »
Hi y'all. I have a challenge to all flat earthers: Send a scientific paper on the flat earth model to a local university for some looking into and evaluation.

That's it!... or to put it in longer terms...

I want you to make a full scientific paper on the flat earth model and explain observations in reality on your model and put them into the paper with experiments, hypothesis and so on.

Like for example measuring the true size of the sun to the earth using a sextant or measuring how far away the moon is using parallax. (There WOULD be parallax if it was 3000 miles away but it isn't haha.) But there should also be explanations for things like solar and lunar eclipses or seasons, Things that match up PERFECTLY with reality and that make sense.

Once you're finished with the paper, send it to a university for some looking into and evaluation. I bet it will do great! (SARCASM)

Flat Earth General / While debating a flat earther, he said THIS
« on: April 06, 2017, 02:55:22 AM »

So... Conspiracy exposed I guess??
I'm not a flat earther but I laughed so hard when I read this comment... I mean holy shit.

Are you flat earthers on this site part of the conspiracy? C'mon I wanna know.

As of the time that I calculated (18th March 2017), A very brave Australian woman by the name of Lisa Blair is circumnavigating the antarctic continent all by herself in nothing but a sailboat. As of the date above, she was out at the coast of Argentina and was sailing at about 7.2 knots.

If the earth was the shape AND the same projection flat earthers claim it to be, it would take her MUCH longer to reach the area that she was at on the 18th of March. According to a YouTuber by the name of CoolHardLogic in his flat earth debunking video, the circumference of the flat earth in between Argentina and Antarctica all around the edge of the planet between the landmasses is about 103,700 kilometers. This gap between Antartica and south america all around the edge in a circle is pretty much Lisa Blair's entire path for her journey.

On the 18th of March, she was 52% and 55 days through her journey on her way back to Perth Australia. 52% of 103,700 is 53,924 so she would've had to have covered 53,924 kilometers in only 55 days... but this is utterly impossible, as I mentioned that her average speed was about 7-8 knots. Let's be generous and say that she can remain a constant speed of 10 knots... unfortunately, it would take her about 121 days to do 53,924 kilometers instead of the TRUE 55 days at a much smaller distance and a slower speed.

In a nutshell, getting from Perth, Australia to the coast of Argentina in 55 days in a boat travelling 10 knots or less is utterly IMPOSSIBLE on an Azimuthal Equidistant Projection. It can only be explained on a round earth because her circle around Antarctica is smaller the closer to the south pole she is.
