Flat Earth Debate / Google Earth style flat earth 3d view
« on: July 19, 2018, 11:27:33 PM »
An interesting experiment would probably be to do something like Google Earth but instead of having a round earth you have a flat earth. So instead of just seeing a map you would get to zoom into places. Either someone has tried this or no one has tried this. I hope someone has tried this.

Flat Earth Debate / The Fall-Flat Fallacy
« on: July 11, 2018, 03:14:32 AM »

MrDebunk presents

THE FALL-FLAT FALLACY
A small window into the flat earther psyche

The scientific method, and before that, scientific experimentation in general, is to observe something, hypothesize what is happening, then experiment, and collect all the observations into a conclusion. A theory is formed from observations. This is how we know many things about the world we live in.

The flat earth theory, being incredibly false, naturally has many holes in it. Flat earthers are constantly patching these holes with workarounds which are just that. Workarounds. That is forming observations from a theory, which means it is not an observation, just an easy exit from a tough argument. These are never truly observed to be true, and may as well have huge holes by themselves.

Flat-earthers are flat-earthers for one reason: they barely know anything about the round earth model (a.k.a. reality). When they discover the flat-earth, they eat up all the "proofs" out there and now believe the Earth is flat and the government is covering it up. One thing that often reveals itself is a lack of understanding of simple physical concepts by flat earthers, as evident when they try to debunk the round earth. Sometimes their errors are in the more complex sense, other times they completely fall flat. Their mind usually is too tainted to understand more than a basic level, but it can be done.

Hence, my coinage of the term "Fall-Flat Fallacy." (FFF)

Don't believe FFF is a legitimate thing?
Here are some examples of cheap workarounds created by flat earthers.

Sun and moon rising and setting?

A complex system of the sun and moon
orbiting something, while the Earth
orbits nothing. Where is the object it
is supposed to orbit around?

Sun rises and sets due to "perspective",
which is usually not elaborated beyond
that.

The four seasons?

A 13-minute video that is for "demonstration
purposes only", and uses a complex animation
instead of 22-degree axis tilt and Earth's orbit.

The edge of the Earth?

It is usually believed an "ice wall" surrounds a flat
Earth (normally called Antarctica), and that it is
heavily guarded. There is no proof for either. No
actual images, nothing.

Gravity?

A common belief is that a flat earth is accelerated
upward 9.87 m/s^2 by a mythical force called
"universal acceleration". Not only is there no
proof of this, but this "universal acceleration"
would break the first law of thermodynamics.

Eclipses?

A solar eclipse would probably still be
just the Moon in front of the Sun.
A lunar eclipse is described as being
done by a "shadow object", which not
only has no proof of existing, but is
not supposed to be visible. Easily the
most ridiculous of the excuses.

Boats going under the horizon?

Again, the excuses of "perspective" and maybe even
"waves" are the most prevalent on this one. No real
argument, just an excuse or a shallow "debunk".

There are various other things that I could cover here, but I probably could not bother to do so. This shall be a debate, this post is only the start.

Flat Earther Special Edition of the scientific method:
1. Discover an observation from a round-earther that seems to be a total nail-in-the-coffin to the Flat Earth theory.
2. Wait and think about what they just said.
3. Make a claim that would be used as a lazy exit from the apparent end of the Flat Earth theory.
4. Dance around Occam's razor like a retarded octopus, but never even sense its presence while you abuse your claim all around the Internet.

3
This is Blue Marble 2017 (which I created myself):

The tools used to make this image:

  • A very good computer (you can use a potato if you want to wait longer)
  • The Internet
  • Google Earth
  • Paint.NET (or other painting software)

No, I didn't use some magic CGI software. No, I didn't go on some secret page or go to the deep web or do anything like, if you wanted to know. You can do this at home, with the listed tools.

How did I do this?

First step is to open your web browser, and navigate to this link. It will open up a page that shows a big map and some options. Open the layers tab, and make the Suomi NPP layer visible, which will show a map which is (almost) complete. Put the entire map in view, then click the button with the camera icon in the top right corner. Make sure the selection fills the entire image, set it to a KMZ file and set it to 5km quality, then download.

Open the file you get into Google Earth, and turn the experimental atmospheric graphics on. This will take a while. In the menu around the bottom left with all the options, disable them. Get a good angle, and take a screenshot of your screen (print screen key).

Then open up your paint program, and paste the image into the program. Crop the image, and black out the background behind the Earth. You should get something like this:

If you got that, you will be able to change hue/saturation options to make it look more like the Blue Marble images (from more recently) that you see all over (with more clouds), and the result you see above.

I'd like some debate on this.

Is the base image from REAL data from SPACE?

Take a look at his signature:

Disclaimer: I am confused. Everything I say is speculative and not admissible in a court of law; however, I am neither insane nor a threat to myself or others. I am simply curious about everything in life and enjoy talking about crazy shit. Oh, & btw I like turtles.

Either he is joking, or he is joking in his signature.

Edit: This might also means he is saying he is immune to anyone trying to debunk him, although that is not true.

Flat Earth General / 1 on 1 debate with a Flat Earth using IRC
« on: August 09, 2016, 08:38:12 PM »
I would like to do a 1 on 1 debate with any of these Flat Earthers:

iWitness
sceptimatic
Antithecyst
JRoweSkeptic
John Davis

I would like to this debate in an IRC chat because most of these I have listed are as far as we know psuedonymous and I think they would like to stay that way, like me.

Please contact me if you want to do this so we can set the time and date of the debate starting as well as how we should make it happen. Thanks.

Flat Earth Q&A / Falcon 9 landing in real life
« on: July 18, 2016, 10:12:21 PM »
If the Falcon 9 landing at LZ1 is fake, then how come in my footage of the landing (and from what I remember seeing), when the engines are cutting off, why do I see the silhouette of a Falcon 9 first stage?

Flat Earth General / a challenge to heiwa
« on: July 11, 2016, 12:07:13 AM »
alright heiwa you've been trying to find someone who will win your "challenge" but sadly you won't let anyone win. here we are giving you a chance to win a challenge made for you.

the challenge is:

fly a falcon 9 v1.2 FT with a light payload that you can create, or we can provide, then land the first stage back at the space center

make sure the payload is in a safe low earth orbit (i'm saying you do 200km x 200km to 700km x 700km 10km wiggle room above the max altitude is allowed) and make sure to deploy the payload

i would like some good ksp players on these forums to conduct a demonstration and help me gather the mods

here is a preliminary mod list (growing day by day):

* real solar system and dependencies
* realism overhaul and dependencies
* kerbal engineer
* spacex launchers pack and dependencies (with realism overhaul and real plume configs)
* fmrs
* trajectories
* hullcam vds
* camera tools
* spacex launch towers
* real plume (with dependencies, no stock configs as realism overhaul itself provides configs)
* engine lighting

i can provide links to any mods

heiwa the game is 40 usd so considering you should have at least 40 usd layin around wont be hard to buy ;)

anyways that is it, remember anyone can do this challenge if heiws just keeps saying its impossible or any bs like that

goodbye for now

Technology, Science & Alt Science / @Papa Legba : How Gimbals Work
« on: May 07, 2016, 11:53:49 PM »
@Papa Legba as the "respected engineer" he is, has denied that engine gimbals work. Gladly I made a diagram in about 15 minutes showing how engine gimbals work.

The engine nozzle is tilted a certain amount and the center of thrust is offset relative to the center of mass. This causes the ship to tilt. A gimbal range is how far the engine nozzle can tilt. This engine (not a real engine, just one in this diagram) has a 15 degree gimbal range (compared to the RS-25 SSME, which has a gimbal range of about 10 degrees).

Some rockets have offset center of mass and thrust, so the engines are fully tilted or gimballed to point directly opposite to the center of mass, but the rocket slightly moves laterally. Here we have an example, the Altas V 411, a rocket with 1 booster (frick'n geniuses):

The Space Shuttle also has the same effect, but less prominent.

There is an explanation. If you want more, I will give more.

Flat Earth Q&A / FE Opinion on Blue Shepard
« on: May 04, 2016, 08:53:10 PM »
What is the flat earth opinion on Blue Shepard? Basically, it's a tourist rocket ship that goes to the Karman line for a big of zero G then comes back. They have done 3 successful launches with the same rocket.

Flat Earth General / Responding to Intikam's sig

His signature shows of Jesus (flat earth) and Al-Baghdadi (round earth) and you have to choose one. This is a Cherry Picker Inc. production.

I am an atheist, Jesus founded Christianity, Al-Baghdadi is a Jihadist. I side with Albert Einstein, Bill Nye, Carl Sagan, etc., not Mohammed Yusuf (founder of Boko Haram) or jeranism, who is a total potato.

Flat Earth Debate / Moon circular shadow
« on: April 15, 2016, 10:42:32 PM »
So I was going somewhere when I saw the moon at day. It was a bit like this:

This cannot be done with an anti-moon because:

  • The shadow is concave, not convex.
  • It is sort of gradual. If you look at it, you know it's a shadow.

I am prepared and wearing tin-foil to block the impending stupidity and extreme denial.

Flat Earth Debate / Google Earth with a flat earth

Flat Earth Debate / The Venus Transit
« on: April 07, 2016, 07:47:24 PM »
Some people here think that the planets go around the Sun which is above the disk Earth in the specified model.

But the Venus transit is proof otherwise.

Look at that! The sun, and Venus is that black hole in the top right. The alone sight of Venus in front of the sun is PROOF that the Earth is a planet going around the sun, and Venus is in the same solar system. And Mercury transits too!

It's much more vague, but visible. On the right, there is a dimming. That is Mercury.

Done. I am done.

Flat Earth Debate / An interesting question to answer
« on: April 07, 2016, 07:32:40 PM »
If I launched a rocket with a few cameras on board, past the Karman line, with telemetry data, and scientific experiments to prove it, and I recovered it, would I be obviously faking it? Would I see a curvature? Would I hit the firmament?

OH BABY

It talks about many things that explains the Oblate Spheroid Earth. It's short too, if J watches this and makes an hour long video of him asking pointless questions about the things in this videos, I will not be surprised.

Flat Earth Debate / Occams Razor loves the oblate spheroid
« on: March 27, 2016, 10:46:35 PM »
So I went to the Flat Earth "Wiki" (which is more like a sci-fi fairy tale extravaganza portrayed as reality by just showing screenshots of the original archaic 19th century sources of these assumptions). The hypocrisy is astonishing.

Just look'a this:

Quote from: Someone who is as ominous as the author of the Bible
Occam's Razor asks us which explanation makes the least number of assumptions. The explanation which makes the least number of assumptions is the simplest explanation. Occam's Razor works in favor of the Flat Earth Theory. Several examples exist below.

No. No. and NO.

The flat earth is basically an assumption in its core: "The horizon looks flat, so the earth must be flat".

The pearly blue oblate spheroid the Earth is based on scientific observations, rather than made up answers held up by a weak purple snail with a chicken's body.

If anyone wants to cover the rest, ♫ na me let dem ♫. If anyone thinks I am false, ♫ na me get dem ♫.

Flat Earth General / Virgin Galactic
« on: March 20, 2016, 05:49:10 PM »
I think some flat earthers might want to take a ticket when it is available and affordable to evaluate it. Essentially there is a plane carrying the space plane vehicle. Then at a certain altitude the space plane detaches and fires its engines. It takes a sub orbital flight and you get to space and zero gravity and all that. Then you land.

If the Earth is a ball [correction: oblate spheroid] why don't we fall off the bottom?

Because gravity acts equally in Earth's case. See this diagram.

Flat Earth General / An easier KSP challenge.
« on: March 18, 2016, 03:41:48 PM »
You can use either the demo or the full game to do this, so either way you are OK.

The challenge is:

Launch a manned rocket into orbit, perform scientific research, de-orbit your capsule (you'll need to have a service module to do this, basically fuel and an engine), and land safely in the Kerbin oceans.

Take time to learn the controls with the in game tutorials, and then create a save game and attempt the challenge.

Hard mode: Fly by the Mun and get back to Kerbin.
