Flat Earth Q&A / The Humble Beginnings of the "Conspiracy"

To my knowledge, people living in the the "pre-space" ages believed the earth was round because of "what they saw out their windows". However, in 276 B.C., a genius named Eratosthenes believed the earth was round. He took measurements in Syene (a city in Egypt) and in Alexandria (also a city in Egypt) a year apart, on the same day of the year. Knowing the distance between both cities, and using simple calculations, he estimated the Earth diameter at 7,850 miles. Today, we know that Eratosthenes' estimate was only about 0.5% off. So my question is, was this man the beginning of the conspiracy? explain.
