Arts & Entertainment / Rubiks Hypercube

Has anyone seen this?

It's a free, downloadable, higher-dimensional rubiks cube. I've been playing with it for the last hour or so; the only puzzles I've been able to solve so far are single-scramble puzzles, just trying to picture which way the cubes will rotate is tough as there's a face 'hidden' in the fourth dimension (Which is visible if you zoom fourth-dimensionally but that just makes it more confusing for my money.

EDIT: Just solved a couple of 2-twist puzzles, starting to understand how it moves, now.

Here's the computer solving a fully sccrambled hypercube:

Have a play! I'd read the FAQ first to learn the controls and how it spins.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Dutch catch men after Final Fantasy Pr0n
« on: November 05, 2013, 10:28:45 AM »
So apparently, a Dutch research team caught thousands of men trying to get a fake Filipina 10-year-old to get naked and perform sexual acts. My question is: what men were possibly convinced that the 'child' being portrayed was remotely real? I mean, don't get me wrong, the CGI would be good for a game, or a Pixar movie, but I'd never believe 'she' was real.

I imagine the thousands of 'predators' were more than likely intrigued by a weird game someone found online which simulates a ten-year-old child.

Arts & Entertainment / The Quest to be published
« on: October 17, 2013, 01:20:49 AM »
So, after about a year of writing, about as long editing, getting it reviewed, re-writing and re-editing, I'm finally ready for my 100k novel to fly the nest and start weighing down publishers' desks. I know that in this day and age, anyone can e-publish and get some appreciable sales if they market themselves right, but I quite like the idea of going down the traditional route and getting a physical copy of my work on the shelves of all good booksellers.

|I am preparing a list of potential agents and publishers and I'm looking to start trying my luck this weekend. Wish me well!

While you expect a certain amount of corruption and vote-rigging in the former Soviet states, releasing election results before the first polling booth opens is probably a new low. Still, should make the election cheaper,I guess...

Possession

"OooOOohhh, spirits talk to me. Hear my voice across the veil of death and let my crystal orb channel your voices to speak to the realm of the living!"

The twelve strangers in the dark room held their breath as the medium chanted, rubbing gold-bangled hands over the crystal sphere in front of her. All of them hoped to gain knowledge, wisdom, advice and consolation from the other side.

Unfortunately they didn't know which spirits were listening.

"Is she trying that chanting shtick again?" The ghost of Parsifal sighed "Doesn't she know that's an outdated proprietary language? And what's she rubbing her hands over?"

"A dumb dome." One of the others said.

"You know what we should do?" Lorddave's etheral form asked, hovering close to the chanting medium's ear "Th*rk with her head. We'll take it in turns to possess her and the rest of us get to work out who's possessing her."

"Won't that cause serious lasting brain damage?" Supertails' wraith asked with some concern.

"She's an old lady who sits in a dilapidated caravan with just three scrawny cats and the stink of incense to keep her company. I don't think the living will be missing much." Beorn's shade pointed out.

They sniggered, this was going to be fun.

~RULES~

I have put you all randomly into a list, at the start of every turn I will PM both the person who is to possess me and the next person on the list so that if they can't take their turn they can let me know in advance.

You will have 12 hours from the moment of receiving your PM telling me what you want me to say. There are restrictions to what I'll wrte, however:
-Minimum 10 words
-Maximum 10 lines
-Nothing which breaks the rules
-No 'hate speech' (This will be my discretion "All gays are very bad and against God's holy will" is fine "Homosexuals are evil shits and should be strung up from trees" isn't as it promotes violence. I'll let you know if I won't post fully what you wrote)

You may vote ONCE and cannot change your vote. For convenience- phrase it like this "Thork votes for Tausami" and keep a running list of votes at the bottom of your posts e.g:
'Thork votes for Tausami
Tausami votes for Thork
Dann votes for Thork'

~Scoring~
-Every vote you receive gives you 1 point (Except the possessor)
-If you guess the right person you get 5 extra points
-If you are the possessor you start the turn with 15 points, every vote you receive loses you 2 points. You can have minus points.
-You cannot vote for yourself.

~How the turns are arranged~
-When you receive your 'possess me now' email you have 12 hours to send me a PM. If you fail to do so you lose 15 points and I'll move on to the next person.
-After I post the result of the possession, you all have 24 hours to cast your votes.
-The game starts tonight

The Lounge / 'Possession' - A forum game concept
« on: January 31, 2013, 08:53:39 AM »
These are just my musings on a new style of forum game which is neither werewolf based or a team game. Inspired by the game 'Balderdash'

'Possession'

The aim of the game is to score as many points as possible by bullshitting.

The 'story'- All the players are ghosts who are taking it in turns to th*rk with the mind of a spiritual medium (The Oracle) the game is to possess the Medium and make them say something, the other ghosts then have to guess who possessed him.

The format - At the start of the game, the Medium will randomly generate a list of the players and every turn PM one of them to send the Medium a reply with something they would like me to say. The other players spend the next 24 hours trying to guess who possessed the Medium.

For every vote you receive you earn a point, unless you are the one who possessed the Medium, in which case you lose a point. Everyone who votes correctly gets three points. You cannot change your vote

The aim of the game, therefore is to write something for the Medium to say which sounds like it was written by somebody else and then convince people in the forum.

The winner will either be the one who gets to a set number of points or who gets the most points after everyone has had a turn.

What do people think? Want to give it a try? Want to change any rules?

THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS YET-TO-COME SPEAKS

The snow fell heavy on Christmas Eve,
So deep and so thick that no-one could leave.
But with wine and food and friends all so near,
Nobody in the old house felt any fear.

'Til from the bedrooms a scream was heard,
A terrible sound like someone murdered.

They rushed to see Rushy white like he'd just seen the dead,
And pointing his finger at a shape in the bed.
And floating above it, a figure so pale,
Was a spirit drunk on ghostly ale.

"Don't be afraid." It said with a slur,
"'tisn't me you should fear this time ofyear.
But an evil so evil it feasts on your fear,
Dark, cursed and ravenous were-reindeers.

"There are two in this house sent forth by the devil,
(Trust me about this - I'm on the level.)
They'll stalk and they'll kill twice every hour,
Unless you can end their wretched power.

"Stake through the heart made of pure holly,
Or boil them with pudding, the work won't be jolly.
Kill them both before the stroke of midnight,
Or you'll all be walking towards the light.

Welcome to the festive Forum game - Were-reindeer.

Two of you will be assigned the role of Were-reindeer and when it is a killing turn you send me a PM with up toTWO villagers you want to kill.

When it is a voting round, the TWO villagers with the most votes above a certain number (Which will vary by round) For instance if I say that you need to have over 6 votes to secure a lynch  then if Saddam has 7 votes and Gayer 6 then both will be lynched but if Saddam has 7 votes and gayer only 5, then only Saddam will be lynched.

-Winning conditions-

Every turn is an 'hour' starting at 6 pm.
Reindeer need to get the ratio of Reindeer:Villagers down to 1:2
Villagers need to kill the reindeer before they get to this ratio.

-Roles-

Villagers - Festive folk who have come to a house deep in the forest to celebrate Christmas. Dead villagers become ghosts who can only talk during the 'killing' period

Werereindeer - (Dancer and Prancer) Ghoulish monsters who can transform back and forth at will. Were-reineer know who the other monster is.

Scrooge - Bah humbug! Scrooge can ask the ghost of Christmas yet-to-come whether a villager is a were-reindeer or not. he cannot reveal that he is Scrooge until he's dead.

The Lounge / Werereindeer - A Quick Xmas Forum Game
« on: December 21, 2012, 05:55:51 AM »
'Twas Christmas Eve and all through the house,
Something was stirring, but 'twasn't a mouse.
It came through the chimney, by stockings hung with care,
In the hunt for blood it hoped it would find there.

The Flat-Earthers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Tom Bishop danced in their heads.
And mamma Gayer in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When from the lounge there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the door I flew like a flash,
Turned on the light to see what had smashed.

The shards of glass lit by the lamp's glow
Lit the beast whose growl was so low.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a grisly and gore-soaked were-reindeer.

I ran from the room, so lively and quick,
I hoped beyond hope it was surely a trick.
More rapid than plague rats it came,
And it snarled and howledand moved its massive frame!

"Please Dasher! Please, Dancer! Please, Prancer or Vixen!
Please let me live, let my eyes still glisten!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now go away! Please go away y'all!"

It reared on its legs and let out a roar,
Then lashed out and knocked me down to the floor.
It ripped and it rent and it tore me asunder,
(Little left to be buried, even six feet under.)

It sprang to its hooves, to the bedrooms it turned,
The blood lust now in its belly it burned.
So lock up your doors and don't die of fright
Happy Christmas to all, try to survive the night!

It's the Christmas season, so what would be more festive than a horror-filled forum game told in verse?

The rules will be like a standard Werewolf game except that the Werereindeers will have 2 kills per turn and the villagers will have the option to lynch up to three suspects.

Hopefully this means that it will be finished fairly quickly and before people have time to become bored and walk away.

The Lounge / Parliament - Players Only.
« on: September 17, 2012, 06:20:07 AM »
The Federated Empire of Shenton (FES) is in crisis. Emperor Rowbotham III died, leaving no heir to the throne and now the Empire threatens to crumble into chaos and civil war.

An emergency council is called in the nation's capital involving the barons from the various provinces across the empire. A decision is made to run the empire under a small parliament until a new emperor can be found to reunite the provinces. Immediately the squabbling began. Who would stand on this new parliament, what new powers would they wield?

Eventually Speaker Chris Spaghetti stood in the hall of castle Shenton and made his voice heard:
"The Emperor is dead, gentlemen but the Empire isn't. Not yet anyway;  but if we continue to let this hateful power vacuum remain then it will die of a thousand cuts. As you know, I was the Emperor's chief consul and I specialised in arcane and forgotten Imperial laws and edicts. There is a precedent for this situation, in the middle of the third era, Emperor Shakleton VIII was assassinated before he could bear an heir, each of the twenty provinces sent their baron to the castle to form an emergency parliament, the head of the ruling faction was then appointed Prime Minister who served until a suitable heir could be found.

I have the transcripts of the parliamentary sessions here and decree that a new parliament shall be assembled as follows:

The game will be split into two 24 hour periods: Election and Legislation

During the Election period, the barons have to elect one of their number onto the Parliament. During Legislation, the parliament votes to give or take away powers to the special players in the game (more below)

~The Players~

Speaker - Plays the part of the Oracle

Barons

- Every player (except the Speaker) begins as a Baron, they cannot vote during legislation but can vote to elect someone other than themselves to parliament. They will be randomly assigned to one of three parties:
-Liberals
-Communists
-Conservatives
-*Independent

A baron wins if their party becomes the overall majority.
NOTE: IT IS AGAINST THE RULES TO PUBLICLY REVEAL YOUR PARTY!

*Independent - The independent may be allowed to form a coalition with  the first of the 2 weaker parties to have all their members elected. Unlike other barons, the independent must be elected to be considered a winner.

MP

- An MP is a baron who serves on the parliament. During the 'legislation' period they can vote to:
-Allow/ban the press
-Arrest a baron (prevents a baron from voting for 1 turn)
-Knight/demote a baron
-Spy on a baron

Knight

- a baron with 2 votes in the election period. Is appointed by parliament or demoted back to being a normal baron again.

Press

 - The press serves the role of the psychic except that their identity is known to all. During the Legislation period they can send the Speaker a PM and ask for information on  any player. It is up to the press if they release the information - remember, the press can lie. The press can also be arrested.

Spy

- A spy is appointed by parliament secretly (if they vote to appoint a spy then the MPs have to send the speaker a PM saying who) the spy sends a pm asking about any baron, the information is not sent back to the spy but every MP

~Sign-up sheet~

The Barons of the (20) provinces of FES:

Baron Pseudonym of the County of Dussex
Baron Von Thork of the Barony of Westwodeland

~Winning Conditions~

You will be broken down as follows:

Conservatives - 7
Communists - 6
Liberals - 6
Independents - 1

The parliament shall consist of 13 MPs

To win, the conservatives must have all 7 members elected to parliament, giving them a majority. The Liberals and conservatives must have the Independant elected, plus be the first to have all 6 of their barons elected.

~

Ok, today I'll be allocating you all your parties and roles. Day 1 will begin tomorrow at 1pm BST which will be a 24-hour election period when you'll elect your first MP. You won't know what party they belong to but remember, they will have total parliamentary control so they could decide all on their own to appoint their own spy, shut down the press etc so prepare your manifestos!

NOTE: When they are elected, their political colours will be revealed.

Current Parliament:

Conservatives = 3
Communists = 3
Liberals = 2
Independants = 1

Last Elected: Enigma (Lib)

-Press is allowed

Roll up, roll up! For a brand new forum game not based on Werewolf!

All right, in this game, the aim is not to track down marauding werewolves or secret aliens but to claim power over the Federated Empire of Shenton. Each of the players will be a baron hoping to get themselves elected onto the parliament and each will represent one of three political parties. The aim of the game is to make your party the majority in parliament and take control of the Empire.

The game will be split into two 24 hour periods: Election and Legislation

Women who have high levels of testosteronemay be investigated and banned from competing in women's events in the Olympics.

The intention is not just to prevent steroid abusers competing but also 'hyperandrogenic' women who naturally produce testosterone in high quantities. According to the Commission, these people will have to compete in the men's events.

This raises interesting questions, if a hyperandronic woman is actually 'male' then would a man with correspondingly low testosterone levels be eligible to be classed as a 'woman'

Given the IOC's ruling that intersex people should be 'treated' to remove male characteristics, could  (and indeed, should) trans person be able to compete in events of their opposite assigned gender if they are 'treated?'

Should intersex and hyperandronic females be allowed to compete in the women's events and conversely, should intersex and subandronic men be allowed to compete as women?

Quote from: William Shakespeare, Richard II
This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.
