One of the worst things about Remembrance day is the jingoistic poetry of Kipling, Chesterton et al. The First World War was a tragedy, not a heroic struggle for freedom. That we need the poppy appeal to look after our veterans is a damning criticism of our government's collective failure to look after those they asked (or forced) to serve.
I hold the two minute's silence not with pride but terrible shame that we're still prone to cause obscene pain and suffering to one another. So I remember the poor Brits dying in stinking holes in the french countryside, and I also remember the poor German boys also killed pointlessly.
Never Forget. Never Repeat.
Unfortunately wars are a necessary evil in today's world, I wish it wasn't. The video I posted gave the reason why.
Remembrance day isn't about 'celebrating' or remembering war. It's about remembering those who have died in war. When I undertook the 2 minute silence I was thinking about the loss of life on both sides not just our own, because it was so tragic.
I don't disagree with you about the government not doing enough for veterans but I don't see why I should give up on remembrance day because of that.
Never Forget. Never Repeat.
I thought that was the purpose of remembrance day.
