If the earth was flat, then why is it that when you travel long enough in one direction you see different stars?

I would think that on a flat earth the same stars would be visible the world over.

He would climb atop the ice wall, reach magnetic south and declare his journey a success. The man then turns 180 degrees around and leaves the way he came.

A true expedition would reach magnetic south and continue into the unknown abyss.
