Flat Earth General / Re: Contributions to Society
« on: December 15, 2009, 11:22:24 AM »
C'mon guys, I just wanted this to be a place we could celebrate the achievments of FE believers.  Where we could show that this world has been changed by FEers, and that FE contributions are really what keeps things progressing.

After people read this post, I want them to think "wow, if it weren't for the thorough, brilliant, and meticulous as Zetetic FET scientists, we would never have made it as far as we have in such a short time"

There are multiple origin stories for the Christmas Tree, several of which are pagan. Does this touch a nerve?

And you people laugh at the religious.  As long as its not actual "religion" you believe it.  It is actually quite comical.
Where have I ever said that I laugh at the religious?

I laugh at the ignorant and illogical. If ignorance and religion happen to coincide every now and then... well, that's certainly not my fault.

Also, there are very few things that I believe in. Anything other than my absolute core values/beliefs is subject to change at any time.

If ignorance and religion happen to coincide?  Religion is the last bastion of the incurious.  Having a book that claims to have unquestionable answers to questions like the origin or the universe, the origin of man, life etc. mandate ignorance.

Flat Earth General / Re: Disproving RET - a challenge
« on: December 15, 2009, 09:19:24 AM »
This brings us back to the fact that problem with modern science is not that it is BS, but that religious nutcases who don't understand it are frightened by it.  They deal with their fright, as Mr. Bishop has demonstrated, by covering their ears and shouting "LALALA LA".

and they live by the words of Stephen Colbert (who they no doubt don't realize is a satirist):

"I can't prove it, but I can say it"

The only reason these people aren't constantly met with the mocking derision they deserve is that religion is considered outside the realm of reason.

Bendy light is a sad excuse for a theory.  Boats appear to sink below the horizon because they are sinking below the horizon.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: Why does Tom not want to address this?

looking at a map that includes time zones, you can clearly see that the part of the earth illuminated on a flat earth would not be close to circular at all, much less the perfect circle seen by spacecraft.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: C'mon, give it a shot! I won't poke fun.
« on: December 14, 2009, 02:13:21 PM »
I understand that. that's why I tried to assemble a few examples of phenomena that could not be explained on a flat earth, just to show just how many coincidences are necessary for FE to make sense.

As it is, it seems the earth would have had to be designed deliberatelyto give the illusion it was round.  too many coincidences.

The field lines ARE nearly vertical in Antarctica, because it is the SOUTH POLE!  You finally got something right!  Your parents got to spend a moment relatively shame free!  Keep this up, and maybe they'll let your dad back into kiwanis!

Honestly, since when is a hypothesis a conclusion?

Does this whole thing stem from one man's stubborn refusal to pick up a dictionary?

and one poor estimate clearly devalues the rest of my post.  Way to ignore all substance for semantics as usual.

What substance did you provide? You just mentioned something about how modern science allows computers to exist.

Computers are also an ancient technology. The Greeks had a computer called the Antikythera, which they used for navigation.

In the Victorian Era a man named Charles Babbage built programmable computers which could perform IF, AND, OR operations.

From there it was just a matter of commercialization and miniaturization.

I'm not going to quote myself, but first off, really?  Computers are what make it possible for you to spread your simple minded drivel around the world with a keystroke?  That's it?  I really hope I don't need  to explain in too much detail how many other technologies are part of the process for you to realize how ridiculous that is.

and it still ignores the fact that the main argument in your OP is a quote from a scientist who is way over your head.

Since this is THE place to be if you care about your flat earth, I thought I would start a thread about modern contributions of flat earthers to society.  A place to share the, I'm sure, bounty of distinct progress that zetetic thought has resulted in, and thinkers have made possible.

What better place to honor them than here?

I would LOVE to get one of those shirts for the sake of irony(like my DARE shirt, teehee).  Unfortunately, donating my money to halfwit spreaders of misinformation makes me nauseous.  Please know that I am wearing it in spirit.

This entire inane argument has been made possible by modern science.

the last 100 years or so have seen more progress than any other time in history by a long shot.  The reason for this is the development of the scientific method, which is the foundation of modern science.

What is your evidence that modern science is bunk other than a quote from a scientist?

Psychology and Socialogy are not sciences, and should be ashamed for presenting themselves as such.

Quit being so ungrateful, science has provided you with everything from the computer you use to spread this drivel to the material your shoelaces are made of.  The god you forgot to mention is the reason for irrational fear of science hasn't done anything because he doesn't exist, and that makes you jealous of science.  sorry dude.

You make it sound like one great ape had hair and then gave birth to a hairless version...which now had to use its huge brain to invent Tommy Hilfiger. Im not sure that was the case.

Of course, if you understand how useless the arretor pili muscle is when we are this devoid of body hair, you will see that that is likely exactly what happened, albeit more gradually then a single generation.  ::)

Yes, goosebumps occur when the autonomic nervous system triggers a response in response to the cold, contracting the arretor pili muscle to pull on the hair follicle, raising the hair to trap body heat. Of course this vestigal function is pretty much useless since we don't have enough hair to make it effective.

Speak for yourself!  it makes plenty difference for me.

Quit staring!

I don't agree with the sky mirror theory at all.
Nor I.  It strikes me as an utterly fanciful hypothesis.

I know this is old, but what DO you guys think makes the sun light up half the flat earth, while still appearing round??  My apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but please humor me anyways if it has.

What is love? What is this longing in our hearts for togetherness? Is it not the sweetest flower? Does not this flower of love have the fragrant aroma of fine, fine diamonds? Does not the wind love the dirt? Is not love not unlike the unlikely not it is unlikened to?

How do you know that it's been proven beyond a reasonable doubt?

What is it with people and the "it's a theory, not fact"  semantic BS??

Let me make it clear for you.

Scientists use precise language.  Because of this, they very very rarely use absolutes.  This is why even after rigorous study and testing, a hypothosis becomes a theory, becomes an established theory, becomes a well established theory.

Take evolution for example.  Wait, don't.

Take natural selection for example.  The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection; or The Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life, was published in 1859.  for the less mathematically inclined, that's 150 years ago.  Over the course of those 150 years, the theory has been scrutinized, tested, retested, studied etc.  as much as any other theory.  Possibly more than any other theory in the history of modern science.

What that means is that scientists have been actively trying to disprove this theory for 150 years and failed to do so.  With a century and a half of evidence in favor of natural selection, and as many years of failed attempts to disprove the theory, it remains that: a theory.

back on topic, I think I had a post deleted from this board for off handedly referring to a certain virgin born messiah (history buffs know that doesn't narrow it down much) as a pederast.  Whoops.

1. How do you explain pictures taken from space of the earth?

Adobe (makers of photoshop) has been in on the conspiracy since day one.

Quote
2. How do you explain people traveling around the earth CONTINUOUSLY?

they go in a circle.  duh.  travelers and explorers also make great coconspirators.

Quote
3. How do you explain the horizon?

light bends.  that's why they call it bendy light.

Quote
4. How do you explain things disappearing over the horizon?

you gotta think outside the box.  don't ask a scientist, ask an artist.  it's about the vanishing point.  raphael or one of the other ninja turtles came up with it I think.

5. If you don't believe people have made it to outer space, then how do you explain satelites orbiting around the earth? (the space station? Do you think that's false also?)

there are no satellites, and there is no space station(which, if it existed would be a fucking satellite because it's orbiting the earth making the question redundant, forcing me to be redundant as well)

6. How do you explain the atmosphere?

the 150 foot icewall holds it in!  and its an atmolayer.  no such thing as spheres

The FAQ's explainations are insufficient in nearly all cases.  I read it all the way through, and I can assure you I am quite literate.  Just because it has been asked multiple times does not mean it has been answered at all.  Besides that, just because it has been answered, does not mean the answer had any substance to it.  I can't be arsed to dig through the FAQ right now, but later I'll find examples.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: I tried the step off your chair experiment
« on: December 12, 2009, 08:34:26 AM »
everyone needs to shut up about the chair!  there is no discernable difference between gravity and acceleration.  Gravity and inertia both increase relative to mass so this route will lead us all NOWHERE.

You are not being succinct, you are being vague.  Your frequent one sentence, or often even one word answers to complex questions are not sufficient.  This is why you constantly tell people to check the FAQ, only to have them tell you they already have.  The FAQ is full of these same short answers that do not fully address what they are meant to.

Your answers are not short because of how direct and to the point they are. They are short, because they are incomplete.

I'm sure they didn't, Licey...  not doubt they took the pole to pole measurement of the globe and used that as the radius give or take and induced from there.  It'd probably be even more accurate if they used their own measurements instead of using those of unreliable REers

Newton's "law" of gravitation is false. There is no conclusive proof of general relativity either.

I can't even begin to fathom how wrong that is.

Ok, pick something up. Anything. Now let go. See how it moves downward at an increasing speed? That's called gravity.

While you are right in the sense that newton's law of gravitation is more or less true, your proof falls short(though there is plenty of proof out there that doesn't).  the best way I can explain this is with Einstein's thought experiment.  lets say you are in a room with no windows and no doors.  you stand on the floor without floating off.  are you experiencing the effects of earth's gravity, or are you on a rocket that is accelerating.  in this senario, you can't prove either.

this is why your proof is insufficient, and why the chair experiment is the same.

It is also a great metaphor for FEers living in a room with no windows refusing to look outside of it and see that there is proof of gravity outside that room.
