think about this:
your driving in a car at 65 mph - you hold in your hand a ball. you toss the ball one foot in the air, and you catch it. it went straight up and straight down. now if you hold you hand out the window while driving in the car at 65 mph, and toss the ball, the ball is actually moving at 65 mph and will slow immediately when thrown due to friction with air.

same reason why airplanes dont have to speed up to catch the speed of rotating earth
