Flat Earth Debate / Re: Earth the ONLY flat astronomical object?
« on: February 24, 2016, 06:45:57 PM »
Earth is not an "astronomical object" in the same class as these other planets.

Well, that would depend on your Frame Of Reference, wouldn't it? Say, to an astronaut in orbit, or perhaps one standing on the moon? Through they're eyes, I imagine the Earth would be one of the most wonderful "astronomical objects" of all.

This time it is on topic. It shows that the earth has a curve. Isn't that's the thread about?

I imagine it can be interpreted that way. If it were to be accepted, it would show that there is no flat astronomical object at all.

I'm teetering back and forth now. I made the mistake of watching a Russian conspiracy documentary about Antarctica and how Nazi Germany was trying to claim it because it had good hiding spots for them under the glaciers. Surely the Russians would tell us it's not a continent so I was convinced until that but if you give me a reason to not trust the Russians I might lean more towards flat again, I'm in the middle now. Middle Earther.

I don't think you made a mistake watching that. I have heard the same accusations concerning the Nazi party from another source. However, you need to take this for what it is . . .simply information for you to weigh against what you know, then make an educated decision on how it changes your point of view, if at all.

It would make sense that the Hitler led Nazi party would seek out such a place, at least to me it does. With that said, it can be interpreted differently depending on who you talk to. . . . Just look out your window . .

Haha! This is great. My job also relies somewhat on the round Earth. I work in the welding industry, specifically, supplying the wire for welding. The company I work for supplies special alloys to companies like SpaceX and its subcontractors, and some various companies in the oil industry. Since apparently the Charming Anarchist seems to think that the flat Earth has an impact on the oil industry in some way. I could be out of a job!!

Welding wire? I started my business with 2 spools of wire, a welder, no face shield, and, obviously, no brains. That was 30 years, 2 kids, and 3 grandkids ago. Man, how time fly's when your having fun. Then again, fun is just another Frame Of Reference.

My wife interviewed with SpaceX 3 years ago, but declined do to a relocation requirement. Can't say as I blame her, if she took the job and CNN broke the news of a Flat Earth, we would really be fracked.

You can't draw a comparison to the flatness of a galaxy or a solar system because they are not singular objects. They are a series of spherical objects orbiting around a much larger object. Orbit happens around a central point so a number of objects orbiting at varying distances will appear disk shaped but in reality the system as a whole is fluid and moving at different paces. Take Saturn, its main body is spherical but its orbiting objects appear disc shaped when In fact we know that they are many icy lumps orbiting. It's like comparing the qualities of a solid to that of a liquid.

I understand the physics behind Orbital Mechanics and the formation of Galaxies and our Solar System. But keep in mind when you are debating with a Flat Earth believer, that the "Lights in the Sky" are somewhat different then what we (Round Earthers) believe to be true. So yes, I was comparing Apples to Oranges.

There is good reasoning to why our planet is inhabited. It meets the appropriate conditions for carbon based life forms. That isn't to say that life forms formed from other compounds couldn't exist elsewhere, we just haven't discovered them yet (or if you follow the doctrine that NASA are lying to us then maybe we have!). Perhaps there is life on the rocky moons of Jupiter and Saturn... We don't know yet but I'm sure that in our lifetimes we will. And then our Earth will seem less special and a little more... Ordinary.

To set the record straight, I am a firm believer in evolution, and I have no reason to doubt NASA. With that being said, I also have an open mind and will look at the Flat Earth and Dual Earth models completely, ask questions when needed, and then I will debate the observations behind each theory, including RET.
As far as life on the rocky moons of Saturn or Jupiter, if we have or when we do find it, and it turns out to be microbial or maybe silica based, my thought is we will be far from "Ordinary". We, as a species, have evolved and left our own planet in search of life. That alone will still make us "Special".

Stop derailing.
Yes, I would appreciate it if you would give my Topic back, please. It's mine.

On another note, my Wife and I were talking last night, and I mentioned The Flat Earth Society. As I was explaining to her what it was about, she interjected and stated, "So, let me make sure I understand. In the Flat Earth Theory, satellites do not exist?" to which I said "In most cases no, but it is still a theory in progress." and she replied, "Great! The Earth is flat!, I'm going to put in my 2 week notice first thing in the morning! Then I can come work with you!" When she saw my blank stare, she reminded me that she works for AT&T . . . . as a SATCOM signal analyst.

So, I guess my world will change after all, in more ways than one. Thanks, FES!

Well, who ever heard of a fisherman who was wrong?

Well, the fishermen I'm referring to spend more time trolling than catching.
Anyways, welcome to the greatest online debate since Al Gore said he invented the Internet!!

Finally, an actual debate rather than just "you're wrong, it's not the way you think it is but I have no argument to back up my claims"...

Try to see it from the other side, as difficult as it seems. Advancement and knowledge is the child of an open mind.

That's a good point, if may be difficult to observe. But we'd be pretty unlucky if all flat objects happened to be side-on to us wouldn't we?! Surely they'd move in relation to us allowing us to see an oval shape?

Well, we are not unlucky. Galaxies are flat, and we see plenty of those. If you look at our "Currently Accepted" model of the solar system, if there were to be a flat planet, it would stand to reason that it would be presenting an "edge on" profile to us.
As far as FET goes, If I were to believe it, we would be quite unique in the way of things. But that's my opinion. Another FET believer would be better suited to answer that.

And then there is DET. Follow the link in Jrowes sig to read about it. I am currently reading it, and find it quite fascinating.

Massive objects have their own set of physical laws in the same way that minuscule objects do. They form in the same way, move in the same way and look the same. So it's not hard to believe that the Earth would do the same thing as all the other similar objects, of similar size, that we observe. It's fairly egotistical to assume that we're special!

But we are special, regardless of what shape the earth is. You are a Round Earther, such as myself. Can you tell me how many planets we have found with signs of civilized life? . . I think the answer to that makes us special.

. . .  because I think this place is going to be a whole lot of fun!
By the quote above, I believe you understand quite well.
With that said, the FAQ should answer most of your questions, though it will more than likely propose more questions than it answers.
There are some well educated people here, on both sides, as well as a few fishermen . . . . . chew on that for a bit . .

Have fun!

Hey, if being right means that much to you, by all means.
With that, I have to ask, what is it exactly I am supposed to be faking?

So, when the story breaks, and all of your hard work and research has paid off, what will change in your life?
I will be rich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Just think of all the wasted taxes I will save!

You? on the other hand??  You clearly sound worried.
I bet you will be out of a job because you are probably just a middle-man between multiple lies.  Why else would you care??

What part of my post makes me sound worried? The only thing I worry about is where the fish are biting.
As far as being out of a job, I seriously doubt it, unless the revelation of the earth being flat causes a serious decline in the love affair people have for the classic American muscle car. With that said, I don't see myself as the middle man in any possible definition of the word.

I would still like an advocate of the more standard FE model to supply a response to the original post though regarding the other observable planets...
The answer will be the same, especially under the acceleration model.

"Why would they need to follow different laws of physics? The same laws create different objects. Under RET, the Sun (a star) allows the creation of planets. under DET, and several classical FET, the existence of the Earth (a flat surface) allows the creation of the other objects."

But the point, JRowe, is that there are a number of different astronomical categories; Stars (in their different phases and different chemical make-ups) Rocky Planets, Gas Giants, Ice Giants... All of these objects are observed as spherical. NONE of them are flat. To suggest that the Earth should be different because stars are different is a pointless argument because we are a rocky giant just as Mercury, Mars and Venus are.

How sure are you that we would be able to 'see' a flat, disc like celestial body, if one existed? Even in our own solar system, if it was presenting an edge on profile, in the outer rim, I think it would be a challenge to find.

Some of us are actually interested in truth. Why is this such a hard concept to grasp?
And how do you know for sure what the truth is? What you personally observe? We can't always trust what we see and hear, so we have to make a conscious choice of what to believe is the truth.
With that said, I am a firm believer in science, after all it has given us a few amazing discoveries. I'll let you think of some on your own.

I have seen some wonderfully beautiful things on this planet that leads me to believe it is a globe, .... and then there is Kansas.

When I was growing up, and looked out of my window, all I could see was tall snow covered mountains. That's all I knew until I was 10. In those 10 years it never occurred to me that the entire planet was like that....... oh, never mind, it isn't.

My point is, everybody is going to have a different point of view. A different opinion, or interpretation of what is placed before them. As far as I'm concerned, science, when followed with an open mind and no pre conceptions, can lead the observer to the truth.

But I still do not think my life will change much either way.

And the Governments of the world have been lying to us.
My question is, if this were to happen, and Flat Earthers finally get to have they're day, what would change?
How would this affect your day to day life, your job, your hobbies, etc.?

Myself, I don't think it would change much. The shape of our planet (or disc) really doesn't influence the choices I make every day.
I would still wake up every morning, jog 7 miles, shower, eat, and go to work making sure that the 84 employees that rely on my business to provide for themselves and they're families have a job.
After work, I would still come home and spend a couple hours working on 1 of 4 classic cars in my garage, then spend the evening with my wife before going to bed only to rise and repeat.
We will still enjoy our weekend getaways on the water, out of site of any land (I'm sure that wouldn't change).
I will still revel in the sound and feel of a big block Chevy.
I will still relish the feeling of the air rushing past me when I go skydiving.

With that said, I'm sure some changes in the world governments will take place, what exactly I can't say, but I'm pretty sure after that story breaks, changes will happen quickly.

So, when the story breaks, and all of your hard work and research has paid off, what will change in your life?

Hey all,
I came across The Flat Earth Society a couple of weeks ago, and I haven't been able to stay away since! I find myself drawn back here even during my lunch break at work, so I figured since I'm already addicted, I might as well sign up and make myself known.
It goes without saying, I am a Rounder, however I do have an open mind and I look forward to discussing both points of view. Who knows, maybe "Outside the Ball" is where it's at.
