Arts & Entertainment / Re: Brahms or Wagner?
« on: June 11, 2010, 09:43:21 PM »
Its not that no one cares, its just that a lot of people don't. We could shift this into a debate about aesthetics, why 'cultured' music is important or why it isn't, but it comes down to the fact that thats not the question I asked. I want to know who your favorite Romantic is and why. I don't care if you think the music is old and dead and that progress is all there is. The music has a context (or it would never be preformed) and it has a meaning. Classical music is relevant because history is relevant. We still read and speak Shakespeare, study Newton, and believe in Locke. Why can't we listen to Bruckner too?

I'm working in the wester classical tradition here, which try as you might, hasn't lost its relevance. Think of Film scores, commercials, Yo-yo Ma. I can't say its more popular than your wonderful "I know you want me" but I can say that if the music loses its importance entirely that the Romantic era will be the last to go.

News flash. The Romantic period is consistently recognized as the high point of western music. There is no music that is preformed more often, or stays in the repertoire than that of the Romantic period. It is enjoyed by more people than any other form of western classical music, and is still found in Neo Romanticism today. There is no reason that it should loose its relevance.

He truly is the piano giant. People pretend that they were better, but you can't match that rubato.

Hi All, I'm Bill. I figured before I started doing things I'd introduce myself. I'm a music/math major, but I've been around the physics game long enough to like what your sayin'.
So um... yeah... Nice to meet you.
p.s. I think I'm going to define myself as a agnostic among the whole Fe debate.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: Sun/(Moon) Significantly Above the Horizon
« on: January 25, 2009, 12:33:59 PM »
I wanted to point out that the "sacred text" chapter nine does not really explain the sunset as well as an round earth model. Keep in mind that both models work but round model need less explanation.
Quote
A flock of birds, when passing over a flat or marshy country, always appears to descend is it recedes; and if the flock is extensive, the first bird appears lower or nearer to the horizon than the last, although they are at the same actual altitude above the earth immediately beneath them.
This is because the earth is round. The evidence is circumstantial. He uses an assumption that the earth is flat to make his point.

Logic Seen and noted. Although they could have mad a Map makers guild for the same profit.

How would the conspirators make money by launching rockets off the edge of the flat earth?

How would they do it off of a round earth? If they can do it off of a round earth, it would be just as easy to do it off of a flat earth. The Conspiracy is uneeded

We got off track again.

Duhem-Quinetheorem, states that it is impossible to conclusively disprove any scientific hypothesis.

We can only make one seem more Unreasonable then the other. There are muany posts and topics dedicated to making a Flat Earth seem unreasonable and improbable, But not impossible. A round Earth, by the same logic, can't be proved impossible. I want someone to make it unreasonable and improbable. ;)

Good Luck and Happy Hunting. :)

Nasa Launches some sort of Rocket. They invite people to watch. They cant all be conspirators. People can come if they want. I'm sure you could go watch one. The point of the question is: Couldn't Nasa fake launches of the edge of a flat Earth? It would seem like a more profitable method of doing it. They wouldn't have to pay gaurds to gaurd the ice wall. Why was the conspiracy neded in the 1400s. There was no NASA then.

It has nothing to do with a Round or flat earth. It's about Triangles! It applies to Geometry. it has nothing to do with falling pencils. Your pencil will also accelerate, until air resistance slows it down. Sorry I didn't catch that mistake sooner.

P.s. Its Pythagorean theorem. And its A^2+B^2=C^2.  Learn your Physics and your math.
Then read the faq. then you can find the holes in an argument like this.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but what I said is true. You can try it yourself. The only thing I can think of that you would be referencig would be relativity. Read about how accelerationg objects work and what outside viewers would see. Then get back to me.

If a flat earth is accelerating then it will be exactly like gravity. Think of jumping at the beginning of an Elevator ride and you fall what seems alot faster. at the end, when your slowing down, if you jump, you fall slower.

Whats past the Ice Wall. If the Earth were flat wouldn't we have missions that Nasa and other organizations could come up with to explore this? Woldn't it be just as profitable to launch off a flat earth as it would a round earth. Why was the conspiracy nessecary in olden times before people could embezzle money from rockets? The greeks thought the earth was round way before they had rocket feul or airplanes, why did they lie to others then?

Can't you just launch a rocket with a camera on it. Think October Sky.
