Are you implying that I'm usually inhumane? :P

Not as inhumane as being reminded that Jeremy Beadle still walks the earth :!:

Maybe, to avoid confusion among the literal minded, the choices should be spherical earth and flat earth. But since there are so many advocates of the devil in each camp, perhaps it would serve no purpose at all.

This forum amply illustrates how resistant people would be to such a paradigm shift

I was alluding to this very space, which seems to be populated mainly by our colonial cousins. At least thats my theory; any other nationality would have got the joke by now.

Bro. Did you know the perennial sowthistle is a "Prohibited noxious weed" in most parts of the USA?

Not sure how they are going to prohibit you though; try saying something contentious, that seems to get them going.

I'm not sure? Would a 40 year old Phd scientist involved in plant DNA 'really' go with a flat world theory?

Regardless of what country you are from, it will be a less prosperous, less powerful and less successful country than the one that Bush is leading.

The trouble with the prosperous and powerful is that they erroneously believe that this state of existence proves that they must be right in all manner of things and therefore have the right to impose their beliefs on others

I think this forum has everything to do with exploiting peoples general intolerance of competing beliefs (genuine or otherwise) to have a bit of sport.

This thread is only unusual in not having decayed into invective after a couple of posts.

What about mistakes(or evel just subtle changes in meaning) in translation? Embellishment over time? Inaccurate chronicling? Church-driven alterations? Do you really think that over all this time, the integrity of that book is 100% intact? Even IF the original texts were completely true?

Maybe it was the bit about the guy being nailed to a cross that got changed...

If the truth, as revealed in the bible, contradicts the theories of science, then we should regard this both as a test of our faith and also a sign that the theories of science need further tuning.

Just because it's disk-like now doesn't mean it'll and up that way.

Given that our earth is flat it seems perfectly logical that a protoplanetary disc will coalesce into a disc shaped planet.

Not yet, but it clearly reveals the mechanism by which disc-like planets can be formed.

Isn't belief emotional whilst knowledge is rational?

Indeed, but the question that goes to the root of this forum is How much knowledge is compatible with belief?

I'm not a Christian anymore, so I think the whole thing is B.S.

And why did this Damascene conversion occur, was it because you found concrete evidence that god doesnt exist?
More likely your beliefs changed for reasons that you dont fully understand, you just became uncomfortable with your previous world view.
Belief is not something that a person has any conscious control over; you cannot decide to believe in something that you know to be unlikely.

If a person is a Christian, I think he should try to make sure that he is not misinterpreting the Bible before he places too much faith in some specific area that has nothing to to with 'salvation.'

Oh dear. Which bits are about salvation and which bits are not? How, about eating pork? Clearly that's optional  ; but homosexuality?

No, its all or nothing.

Indeed, anything else leads to moral and spiritual relativism.

The conflict between faith and common sense is a tricky one: for instance common sense tells us that there are three spacial dimensions while string theory assures us that there are 11 or more, all wrapped up very small so we cant see them. Should we place our faith in science or stick with common sense?
