Title: Oscars 2019
Post by: Pezevenk on February 09, 2019, 03:31:32 AM
Have you seen any of the movies nominated? What do you think about them? What do you think about the awards in general?

Also, of course everyone here is team Lanthimos. I don't think he's going to win a lot of stuff though...

scaries 2019.

Illuminati vs illuminati vs illuminati. And the winner is illuminati.

Boring. Just boring. Nothing but boring. I do not interest at all since many years.

Well I can agree with that, but it's kinda fun to talk about sometimes.

It better not be a movie about a fish in a tub that some homeless woman falls in love with. That just doesn't sound interesting.

I've only seen three of the movies on best picture list. Blackkklansman black panther and bohemian Rhapsody. I liked all of them but best picture? I don't quite see it.

I'm gonna watch Green Book today. Doesn't seem very interesting but eh, whatever. None of them are very interesting. But of course I hope the Favourite wins, even though I haven't seen it yet lol.

I think it was not a great year for movies.

I just got back from Green Book. It's a movie alright. It has a beginning, it has a middle and it has an end. The characters have arcs and everything is good in the end. It is played by actors directed by a director and it is shot using cameras and then edited. It makes you feel good in parts. You can also tell everything that happens in the movie from the very start. Actually you can tell everything that happens if you watch any 10 minute segment of the movie. Fine, but I probably won't be watching it again and it's not special. It's ok if you want to see a feel good movie.

Not one much for short films, but this oscar nominee is just simply haunting. Check it out.

Okay I changed my mind. There is greatness this year.

https://www.netflix.com/title/81035279

It's pretty interesting. But there's a part half way through the movie where they need to secure 175,000 gallons of water and there's an issue with customs. I don't want to ruin it but it's the hardest I've laughed this year.

Lol I was reading about the story some time ago, it's hilarious. And now they wanna push for another one I hear, no idea why.

ALSO, I just got back from The Favourite. Good movie, extremely well shot. Maybe don't get your grandma with you if you see it, she probably won't like it very much. However, it's extremely inoffensive compared to some of Lanthimos' other films, I was a bit surprised. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that the ending is a biiit abrupt and not very satisfactory, it makes sense why it ends like that, but it might not be very satisfactory to some people. Overall it is one of the better movies I've watched this year. I'm glad a Greek director is making cool stuff and getting awarded. It's been a long time since we had someone gain recognition abroad.

Also the tweets/instagram posts against it that they showed were absolutely savage, I love them.

There's another documentary sort of like it on Netflix called The Queen of Versailles.   It was about this real estate tycoon who was building one of the most expensive houses in America and then the financial crisis hit. You start off by hating these people and taking perverse joy in watching them get wrecked by the crisis but by the end sort of sympathizing with them, especially the wife.

Idk I'm definitely not sympathizing with this Billy character... I can definitely sympathize with some of the people who worked for it and the pressure they had to face.

As for the tycoon guy, i don't know his story but real estate tycoons kind of fucking suck in general so I don't think I'd care very much.

Black panthar won an Oscar! For a forgettable musical score.

Guranteed if it was the same kind of movie but set in a place that lent itself to having white actors, it would not have won a damn thing

Hackerman.
Rami Malek.
He's in a show called Mr. Robot where he's a hackerman.
He also fell off the stage.

Damn Shifter, why is it that you and the rest of the SIWs (Social Injustice Warriors) drag identity politics into everything? Can't you just enjoy something without dragging politics into it?

Seriously though, BP's success has nothing to do with "black privilege". It has to do with wokevertising, companies cashing in on the popularity of these issues to make a lot of money for very white people and to give a "human" face to their conglomerates.

Tell me I'm wrong! No other super hero movie, including the latest avengers which raked in more than 2 billion dollars even gets a mention. You know if this was 'white panther' it could have had the same musical score but not even a nomination.

We are being told that Wonder Woman was a first for a big screen super hero movie featuring a woman as the main star. We did, but in 1974. I wonder if that was super progressive for its time. It's been rebooted a few time since but only the one featuring Gal Gadot seems to count. Forget that there were ever any others. Doesn't fit in this current male bashing patriarchal society we live in. We have also had Super girl, Black Scorpion, Birds of Prey, Cat Woman, Elektra and Jessica Jones. Now we will get Captain Marvel and Black Widow movies

Do you not see the narrative at work? We were never some evil patriarchal society diminishing women. And I could go on an even bigger list of all the black actors and movies they had a lead or were the majority of the actors but somehow history has been erased and only Black Panther counts. The industry is playing on everyone's so called 'progressiveness' and trying to cash in on all these 'movements' going around. Our generation has been pretty equal to black people and women. Only difference is we didn't have social media back in the day to constantly deceive us about the world around us.

Insane, I know. We already met the quota of 1 superhero movie staring a woman per decade.

Oh wow, maybe that's what this is all about, cashing in on stuff, and maybe it has nothing to do with any of these groups being privileged!

I am 37. I get the impression you are younger. My parents generation, did not have equality for all, I grant you that, but I am not talking about that generation.

It's pretty obvious social media was not a thing until only ~12 years ago or so. I think you would find that many people do live in 'bubbles' there ie they 'like' and read news which is biased to them and their friends are like minded. As such their view of the world is skewed. You would probably agree that social media is not a neutral, factual or independent news source yet many people digest their news from the Facebook 'feed'.

So tell me again which part of that is hilarious. Or are you really this stupid?

Do you find the hype of 'wonder woman' (the Gal Gadot one) being 'progressive' (because 'oh look! A female lead!) as over the top? Seeing that we had a wonder woman movie in the 70's? Plus a string of female led movies since
