Title: No, seriously...is this a joke?
Post by: John87 on September 08, 2016, 12:30:42 PM
In response to some of the threads I've been reading recently I would really be interested in the results of this poll to see what people's real motivations are for being here.

It would be interesting to see the numbers of people posting on this forums who ACTUALLY believe the Earth is flat.

I was gonna make a topic about this yesterday lol.

Flat earth society is entertaining. Like a clown or WWE.

I'd compare this forum to wrestling...idiots beating onto eachother, even though they know the other one is only playing :)

I like watching those 5-8 minute videos about flat earth, they are entertaining. You know like those fantasy movies about birds who can speak English.

40% troll who pretends to believe
40% trying to disprove flat earth
10% is just here for entertainment
10% is retarded and actually believes earth is flat

Yes. I believe the earth is flat.

And the idiot that I am, I accidentally voted 'I genuinely believe the Earth is flat' when I meant to vote 'I genuinely believe the Earth is round' :D

So the poll above is currently more round Earthers than flat ones :D

I am actually curious on this one who picked what. I will say I am one of the two that only has one vote.....which one though?? Quite the difference.

Oh and I too thought John was a flat earther because of his avatar

Well, he edited the poll after people voted. Clearly this is a joke to him!

Didn't vote.

I don't BELIEVE.
If I didn't know, I would leave it in limb of undecided.
Wouldn't believe either globe or disc.

I KNOW it is Globe, because I see how things work around us.

And I see how much effort some people put into rejecting facts that Sun rises and sets,
that for sunrise and sunset horizon casts crawling shadow on mountain sides and tall buildings,
that Sun and Moon massive amount of time don't change angular diameters during the day,
that light mostly travels in straight lines, except when atmosphere bends it slightly down
(or little more down or little up when temperature distribution on air layers allows),
that with all other, real conspiracies, nobody has reason or wants to spend money on "Globe Conspiracy",
that circumferences of Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn are both smaller than circumference of Equator...

How hard some people try to believe that Moon landing was "hoax",
and that midnight sun videos on Antarctica are "fake".

But I'm not here to "convince".
Everyone has right to believe whatever they want.

But THEY have to want it.
And they have right to know ENOUGH for their own decision.

Cherry Picking to convince ignorant people the Earth is Flat can harm them.

Some kids can reject formal education and lose hundreds of thousands of dollars during carreers as lower qualified workers.
That money could, under special circumstances, even save lives of their dearest ones.

No, no, by all means no, much like yourself I am one of those 'fringe' Earthers, neither flat nor round.

My Earth is the donut shaped Earth and yours is evidently the heart shaped Earth, although our two belief systems may seem to differ greatly I think we share a lot more in common than these flat and round heathens nevertheless.

It is approximately flat on shorter distances.

Two verticals 60 nautical miles apart are not paralel.
There is one degree of tilt between them.

Between two verticals one nautical mile apart there is angle of one arcminute.

Right now I can't afford even the cheapest theodolite myself
(that cheapst one that I could find has accuracy of 5 arcseconds),
but there are organisations and people who have them.
Some even have Total Stations, much more expensive.

Didn't search for theodolites or transits on e-bay, but here is description of both.
Theodolites and Transits (http://www.johnsonlevel.com/News/TheodolitesAllAboutTheodo).
Total Station integrates theodolite and distance measurement.

The Earth Is Flat.

The Milky Way is a flat disk.

The Milky Way is a flat disk.

How is that possible when in all other instances "gravity" causes spherical shapes?

The earth is not a sphere because it is rotating.  If the rotation speed was increasing the Earth would become closer and closer to having the shape of a disk.

The Earth Is Flat.

Saying it is, does not make it so. Further  there is no proof that it is. EVERYTHING is against it being flat.

There is nothing to support that fantasy and everything to prove otherwise.

The Milky Way is a flat disk.

How is that possible when in all other instances "gravity" causes spherical shapes?

"In all other instances" centrifugal force causes bulge around rotating edge.
Earth included.
And "in all other instances" we have "tons" of other galaxies also "depressed at poles".

Shape depends on ballance between centripetal and centrifugal force.
Centripetal force is produced by gravity, and centrifugal by rotation.

Being pseudo forces or field forces doesn't change their intensity.

Actually this is what Earth and the Moon look like, and we don't know what causes the egg Moon shape...

You draw Earth wrong.
You draw it extended at poles.

Earth is expanded at equator, all around. Like "symmetrical belly fat", but it is very small percentage.
It has 14 miles bigger radius at equator than at poles.

And yes, we do know what made Moon extended in the direction of Earth.
When it was formed, tidal wave on building material extended it.
Tidal wave on Moon was caused by Earth gravity.

~~~~~
What do you think, was Moon liquid while was forming,
or was forming "rock by rock" collected by own gravity,
was it forming slowly, during millions of years,
or it was created in a second and already solid?
