Title: Why do you believe?
Post by: No on October 13, 2006, 06:31:44 PM
Why do you believe this when there is no evidence or reason for a conspiracy, and no basic reason to believe in a flat Earth. What is it that makes you want to believe in a flat Earth? There doesn't seem to be any reason.

Read the FAQ for the experiment that started it all.

Yes, it is based of a crazed psuedoscientist who died 150 years ago. His work was clearly not ignored, so why hasn't it become the mainstream theory? Simple: it is wrong.

So far, all of year posts have been rants, with NO evidence for a round earth. Bring some to the table.

No evidence? How about NASA? How about every government in the world believing its a round earth? How about the man on the moon? How about World War II? How about the simple fact that there is no scientist, no politician, no respected official who believes in a flat earth? How about the years of ridicule by popular culture? I don't need to prove a round earth because it has already been proven by Antarctica, NASA, and the common beliefs of all citizens. All of your evidence towards a flat earth has either been the defending of the possibility, with no reason to even believe it in the first place. Conspiracy theories are all that this is based on.

It's not a question of belief.  Belief implies faith.

Then what is it? Knowledge? That one guy's experiments don't invalidate all of the other ones made by round earthers.

It's because we take a zetetic, not a theoretical approach.

Contemporary scientific method (which has arrived at Round Earth conclusions) tends to begin with a hypothesis which is later tested in attempt at validation. If a scientist has a conclusion in mind before he even makes observations, how can he hope to avoid subconciously formulating evidence and theory which supports it?

Zetetic science puts the observation and testing before the hypothesis - any Flat Earther worth his salt will have addressed the issue of the Earth's shape without any preconceptions, and concluded by observation that the Earth is flat.

Most Round Earthers will simply have learnt that the Earth is round from higher authority (the scientific establishment, the media) and will not have sufficiently verified the "facts" for themselves.

The Flat Earth Society does not encourage people to believe that the world is flat, it encourages people to find out the shape of the Earth for themselves. Why do I believe? Because I did just that.

I too am sceptical, which is why on one of the numerous times I've been on a plane I concluded to myself that the Earth is round. No, actually more accurately I saw nothing I wasn't expecting.

...of course I've not considered how the conspirators have played a 10-hour long movie against my plane window every time.

WisconsinAmmo's aeroplane video clearly shows that curvature (if there is any, which there isn't) is not visible from the window of an aeroplane. I have verified this myself on numerous flights when I have been specifically looking for signs of the Earth's alleged roundness.

Depends where you've flown. On my several trips to America, I've flown across the Atlantic Ocean on pretty clear days and it clear for all to see the curvature, but as you're an FE'er you obviously deny everything anyone else says.

Why do you reject, then, his statement of not seeing any curvature?

Obviously its okay for you to deny what anyone else says unless it supports your agenda.

Why does Dogplatter continue to say this when the line he drew himself over a still from WA's video clearly denoted curvature?

I have not seen WA's video, but it is unfair and unsound to claim that one person's observation is better than another's simply due to which idea it backs up.

Not that far, actually. I stood on the summit of a 6000' mountain and was only able see about thirty miles in all directions, and not because of Earth's curvature.
