Pokemon always seems to die after the 3rd game in the generation, but then releases a new game in a year or 2 making it cool again but then it dies out again only to repeat the cycle.

This. Well, the first part of this. I enjoyed Pokemon when I was a child because I was young and stupid. Now, people enjoy it for nostalgic reasons.

I think once something reaches a critical level it will never die; look at lego, Barbi, Star Wars crap, Thomas the Tank engine etc.  Once something achieves enough mainstream success as a particular 'brand', it can be repackaged, remarketed and will probably never leave our shelves.

Pokemon has always sucked and I don't know why people enjoy it.

While this is a bit harsh, it only appealed to me for a very brief time, and I never really liked the game. The petty little victories of most role-playing games and similar level-advancement-based games really aren't enough for me.

I've mentioned this before, but I feel like saying it again.

I've never played a Pokemon game.

Feels good man.

Pokemon is still the strongest system seller for Nintendo. It's not going to die anytime soon so enjoy your ten generations of rehashed bullshit lol

Or we could choose not to. We don't have to pay Pokemon any notice at all, much less play it.

This, but I'm old so it may not count.

You're not old, it is we who are young.

Pokemon was a very well made turn-based RPG for the GameBoy. It appealed to all ages much the same way any game in the Mario line does.  A younger player could enjoy the game by filling their 'group' full of pokemon they simply liked, while an advanced player could EV and IV train pokemon for maximum potency.  From the first generation on, I have purchased a copy of each release.  While I do not have the time to play them all, they are all extremely well made RPG's and will provide enjoyment for all ages.  It is not a game strictly for children any more than each release of Mario Kart is. Their story lines may lack depth, but for a portable-console game, it's to be expected.

I cannot speak for the Trading Cad Game, or the T.V. show, or any other incarnation of the franchise, but anyone dismissing the games simply on the basis of what society tells you to think, they are missing out on a wonderfully crafted game.  There is a reason why each pokemon generation is phonemically successful.

I will object to anyone who argues that pokemon is a poor game.  Again, as for the other aspects of the game that do specifically target children, I cannot speak for as I have no experience with them.

Pongo must be wrong. First and foremost, pokemon is not an RPG. It has level-based gameplay and turn-based combat, but those features do not define the role-playing game genre. It is no more an RPG series than the Need for Speed series is. Second, powergaming to get your pokemon as minmaxed as you can get them is not the sign of a more mature player and separating young players from advanced players is unnecessary because young players can obviously be good at the game. Third, if neither the cute, fluffy animals nor the powergaming grind-a-thon appeals to a player, Pokemon offers little else, thus making it a poor game for that kind of a consumer. QED, the pokemon games are bad.

I was on the precipice of typing a long reply detailing all the points in your argument that I disagreed with (or were erroneous) before I had a moment of clarity on the absurdity of it all.  If you've played them and don't like them then there is no way I can voice my praise that will change your mind.  If you haven't played them and hate them, then I doubt highly that you will try one out.  Shall we agree to disagree?

Whether we do or don't, we will ultimately disagree. The petty victories of gaining a level or catching a pokemon don't appeal to me, and turn-based combat is not my idea of fun. I did think pokemon was a nice sci-fi concept as a kid, but that was it. Is it really so difficult to imagine someone not liking a level-based TBS game?

Pokemon's heyday was Gold/Silver for the GBC. The 251 pokemon were difficult to catch but not totally unrealistic, the world was huge and felt quite open. They day/night feature was amazingly cool for the time and helped suck you in to the game.

I still remember my kick-ass Silver party, before the game got corrupted :'(
Mewtwo
Mew
Gengar
Golem
Alakazam
Blissey

Ruby/Sapphire were interesting and fairly fun, but wass still pale in comparison to Gold/silver.
