The forums have had some major problems over the past 4-5 days due to malicious hackers. As luck would have it, though, our forums software made the long-awaited jump from v1.1.13 to v2.0 over the weekend. I'm hoping that whatever vulnerabilities were making us a target in 1.1.13 have been removed in the new version. Fingers crossed.
Unfortunately, the old theme we used doesn't seem to have a 2.0 version, so things are looking a little different at the moment. I'm looking for a better theme but I figured this one would do for the time being. If anyone has suggestions for a blue theme compatible with SimpleMachines Forum 2.0, I'm all open to suggestions.
If anyone runs into bugs in the new software, please let me know and I'll do what I can to fix them.
-
Random Musings is unaccessable because the theme is broke or something.
Also, our rank star images are broken.

Already noticed and already fixed. Try now.

Hate the new theme.
-
Some kinks here and there but who's complaining! ;D ;D ;D

The Earth is Flat. There is no denying this in an airplane at 15 thousand feet with clear visibility in all directions.
It's computers that are strange and unfathomable...

The quick-reply box is broken for me, being about 2.5x my original browser/screen width. Also, stickied topics in RM aren't being shown up top for me, though that might be an issue of my own settings. And my avatar is broken, but that is easily fix'd.
-
Is there any way we can change the forums to not look so ugly? I liked the look we had going before. :(

If you don't like the theme here's your options:

Excuse my total ignorance, but are you suggesting I can pick my own theme? If so I would like that.

I'm saying that, of the themes I linked, you should pick one to propose as the new TFES theme.
-
I kinda like this theme.
I'm having the same weird quick reply issue as Wendy. The reply box hangs off the screen to the right, but it's still usable.
-
I like the new look and its good to be back. One question though, are we going to get back the "view my replies" and "view new topics" buttons?
-
Great to have the site back. :) Thanks Daniel!
This layout is quite fine. I like it best of the ones indicated by Lorddave on the simplemachines website.
-

Look top right. They are links.
-
This theme would be fine if the theme images were edited to remove the gradients and keep it at solid colors.
Also, the background of the thread posts need to be lightened up.
-
Could the "View the most recent posts on the forum" button thingy be activated, please? I get a 404 Not Found.

Works for me.
-
I absolutely hate this theme. This is not just a case of "its new so it sucks," nor is it just a hater hating. it is awful.

Hmm. Does it just not like me?
Here's what's happenin: Instead of going to
http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?actions=recent
it goes to http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php
Even when I manually enter it, it still reverts. Sup wid dat?

Ooops. I mistyped in the post. But anyway, following your link I get:

The requested URL /forum/index.html was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Here are a few blue SMF2 themes:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2009

Only if there hasn't been a significant change in the layout between the various RCs. They likely work though but still... gotta be careful.
-
The lighter background examples Tom listed do look better with not as much contrast in the colors. Of those listed, the first one listed called "5th" has the least dark blue in it.
-
I agree that the first one in my list, 5th, is one of the better ones. Facebook SMF is another one which might work. It's a theme modeled after Facebook.
Facebook SMF: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2195
Daniel should try them out.
-
like the new look, thanks for getting it back online. props!

Alternatively, we could set the text to be completely black by default, like so.
-
For those of you complaining about the theme: this isn't necessarily the final theme. It's just the first one I found that was 2.0-compatible and looked vaguely like our old one. I'm looking into others.
I'll also check into the bug issues a few people have mentioned. Thanks for bringing those to my attention..
-
Too many gradients in my opinion. I like simple white with some blue.

Now, if only you could find a way to keep the spambots from getting through registration.

2.0 should be better for that. The captcha looks more a bit more complicated and there's the option to make the user answer a question in addition to the captcha. We'll see how it goes..
-
Someone needs to purge the member list (of spambots), but there are 800 pages so it would probably take forever.
-
Also do remember that it's easy to set up a dozen or so spambot accounts manually and have them lie dormant. This is achievable in minutes. The forum will never be 100% spam-proof.
-
Well, no forum is 100% spam proof, but spambots have already got past the anti-spam countermeasures today. Stop Forum Spam has some mods that might help http://www.stopforumspam.com/contributions

If the site theme is changed at some point, does that mean that it has to be down again for any length of time?

I have to admit...I'm not a fan of the quote boxes.

neither am i. If there was anything why I liked TFES, it was because quoting looked tidy and organized. Actually, I thought SMF was way better than other forum software mainly because of that. Now it looks like every other lame forum.

I agree with Wardogg... for once. :P

That's really odd. index.php is redirecting you to index.html for some reason.
Could you download GNU wget for Windows (http://users.ugent.be/~bpuype/wget/#download) and paste the output of wget.exe -S http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?action=recent (in the command prompt) here? This will allow us to see exactly what HTTP headers are being returned by the server.

It happens to all the forum members eventually. Nothing to worry about. :P

You have all forgotten the worst part.
WHERE IS THE CHRISTMAS THEME?! WHERE IS IT?!

christ. I hate Vista. I downloaded wget thing, I told it to run. Nothing happened, it doesn't appear in applications, it doesn't appear it programs, it doesn't appear anywhere except as the exe. on my desktop, it short it is lost.
I'm too stupid to follow your advice. I'll try again later. :'(
-
double-clicking it won't run it. I think it needs a command-line execution with the parameters Parsifal specified. Then, it will probably generate an output file with the required diagnostic data.

As parsec said, it needs to be run on the command line. You need to open a command prompt by going to Start -> Run and typing cmd.exe, and you need to be in the folder where the file is (you can do this with cd C:\whatever). Then type wget.exe -S http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?action=recent.
This is annoyingly convoluted in Windows, and if you were on a GNU/Linux or BSD system you would already have some version of either wget or curl available.
-
You guys are so sweet. :-* I did run on it on a command line but I have now solved the problem by emptying every last thing out of the cache instead of just the default clear cache (which was the first thing I did when the problem arose and about twenty more times to boot.)
Thanks again. :)

A darker theme would be nice.
-
I can't put my finger on what it exactly is, but somehow I find browsing the Show new replies to your posts really annoying.

It doesn't really matter, all of the options are terrible.

It's true, but there are better ones than the one that was up though. Thx

There's a mod that compares the memberlist and new regs to the SFP spammer database. It blocks known spambots from registering. This mod plus the questions might actually stop the bot invasion http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1547
