do US PS3 games work on UK PS3's?
-
I know they definitely don't work the other way around, so I wouldn't count on it.
-
Well, I'm pretty sure the systems themselves are region free, but PAL games will not work with NTSC TVs and neither vice versa. It doesn't matter if you're using HDMI though, if I'm not mistaken.
-
The consoles aren't region free but the games are, so excluding I believe only a few exceptions, you should be able to play them on your PS3. And as long as your TV isn't box-shaped, that shouldn't be a problem either.

We use the same format as the UK, iirc

The only way US PS3s and UK PS3s aren't "region free" is the NTSC/PAL conflict when using sub-HD resolutions. Otherwise there aren't any kind of region specific encoding or encrypting going on, and all PS3 games support 720p, so if you're using an HDTV set you don't have anything to worry about.

False.
1) Some Blu-ray discs are region locked, and they do not work with PS3s from another zone.
2) PSN is region-specific, so while an American game does work on an European console, you cannot download European DLC for the American game.

so if i got a US game and ran it on a UK ps3 would it not install the patches if/when they were available.

No, the PS3 does recognize the game region and downloads the correct patches, but you'll need to use the American PSN to download correct DLC.

Is PSN actually tied to the system, though, or is it decided by physically where you register (Probably determined by the first IP address you use)? Of course som blu rays are region locked; The MPAA has no concept of the planets boundaries fading thanks to the internet.

I don't think so - you should be able to register an account to the US PSN and access it from an European console.

But it wouldn't be an issue if the PS3 was truly region free.

You can, a friend of mone created a Japanese account under the assumption he would be able to get game demos earlier. 1 small problem, he doesn't speak/read Japanese

Fair enough, but the OP was asking about games in particular.
