According to Jora this forum is for scientific debate regarding flat earth belief, but is it? The evidence of what he and others post would suggest otherwise. It appears, according to the evidence, a forum for childish ranting and abuse.

Then stop childishly ranting and throwing abuse and get down to real life natural science instead of the nonsense you spout.

As you so eloquently demonstrate.

Yes.

Yes.
I think we need some clarification over what constitutes scientific debate...

I rest my case. Just read my initial question, then read Sceptimatic's reply....I think that gives a good indication of what FEers refer to as Debate!

Yes.
Prove it.

Read the question...I think the answer to your question may be there.
But failing that the question deals with the claim that this forum is for scientific debate, when all I see is childish ranting.
One poster poster put forward a claim that the images being produced by the Japanese Himawari 8 weather satellite proved conclusively that the earth is indeed a sphere.
https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=66042.0
What then followed could in no way be classed as a scientific debate. You, being Jora, in fact contributed this less than scientific post.
Kind of weird how you scream about not receiving empirical evidence from us, and then supply dubious evidence of your own from a third party source. ::)

I challenge you to enter into a proper scientific debate regarding the evidence produced by all orbiting satellites including the ISS that indicate beyond any doubt that the earth is a sphere.

To get the ball rolling here is some background information on the said Himawari 8.

I would gladly accept your challenge, if I did not believe the extent of the argument would be:
REer: Look at these pictures from NASA! They prove the shape of the Earth.
FEer: I believe that NASA has been busted lying in past. Why should I believe these pictures are real? Besides, they readily admit that they use software and artists to generate the images.
REer: Shut up poo-poo head.
Do you think you would be the first noob to make this argument on this forum?

One of the first images produced, though it beams back a new image in hi resolution every 10 minutes 24/7. All the images are freely available to download.

The images have nothing to do with NASA as they are produced by the Japan meteorological agency.
Do you really think your reply could be judged by any standards to be scientific?...inaccurate, yes scientific....no.

You can not have a scientific debate on this site because there is not one piece of science that backs up anything the FE represents. It was started by a con man a long time ago and the premise has simply stuck because of the internet and the underlying trait of all humans to question their existence. Look at how far the Scientology fad has grown and the people who believe in it. And I believe L. Ron Hubbard wrote some great science fiction, but he was obviously mad as a hatter or a genius con man. FE is no different. You can't debate science with people who reject science out of hand. The CGI they claim every picture is created with is in itself science. Irony.

I went to your link and did not find a single image of the entire Earth. Not sure what you want to debate. Yes, they have some cool looking images. They do not even hide the fact that they are composite images (multiple images run through software to make them appear to be one). The interesting part to me is that the images all appear to show a small section of a flat Earth. Perhaps you should step up your game and put your war face on next time you challenge people of supperior intellect to a debate.

It's not our fault that your cognitive dissonance is so strong. I'm sorry but anyone who believes in a flat earth is a moron. You fall into that boat easily because unlike other FE'rs, you bring nothing to the table. Most of these people you can tell, have some level of intelligence. They understand some scientific concepts, some better than most. Which makes me wonder if they just like to debate, or if they really just don't understand enough about physics to get the whole picture. You on the other hand bring nothing to conversation. Which makes you a moron, or a really bad troll. I'm going with both.

You see, I tried to tell you, Lonegranger, whenever we try to have a serious discussion, people like FEskeptic will jump in offering nothing but the oral equivelent of slinging monkey poop. It really makes it difficult for grownups to have intelligent conversations.

Not much "debate." There is scientific evidence presented followed by "Well, it doesn't look that way out my window." It's more like this:

Of course they aren't going to show the entire Earth.
Can you provide me with a picture of an entire tennis ball?
No. That is because the rest of Earth is behind Earth.
It is impossible to do what you ask.
What these are are picture of a roughly spherical Earth.
If Earth was flat, you should see it all.
So why is it only a section?
Also, if Earth was flat, at least according to the common FE bullshit map, then it would have completely different shapes for the continents.
Perhaps you would prefer the images from EPIC?
I know you said they use software and artists to make the images. But you are aware all digital cameras use software to make the image?
They have built in software which takes in data from the photocells and combines that data into an image file which is then saved to some medium or transmitted using some other software (which can be integrated into a single package), and then you have other software on the other end to take that data and create a video or picture stream to be printed or displayed on a screen, and then software inside the printer or display to actually produce the image.
So unless you plan on saying every single digital photo in existence is fake, then using software is no reason to dismiss it.
The actual series of images you are likely talking about has nothing at all to do with EPIC, and instead was primarily a blue marble image where they made a composite image from numerous smaller images to produce a computer model of the globe so you can view it from anywhere. They used an artist for that as the nature of the satellite's orbit precluded it from taking pictures of all of Earth and instead had small bands missing.
But don't worry, none of that applies to EPIC.
If you think they are sections of a flat Earth, feel free to stitch them together (without distortion) into a single image of the entire flat Earth (or most of it).
You also misrepresent the images. They are no more composite images than any other colour digital image.
But don't worry, you can also get the B&W images off their website.
You don't appear to have superior intellect to anyone, or anything, not even a rock.
-
I don't like to call names. So far, though, it seems that FE need to develop more visual-spatial skills. This might help:

But that's how every digital camera works....it's difficult to debate a subject if one side is lacking in the fundamental basics. if you go back to the earliest experiments in colour as presented by James Clark Maxwell at the Royal institute in London back in 1850 something, he showed that a colour image could be produced by the combination of three images, one of red,one of blue and a third of green.
What the satellite is doing is much the same, nothing out the ordinary, it's not black magic, it's fairly srtaight forward stuff, dont let the fact that you don't understand it deflect you. Most if not all digital cameras produce images in the same or similar way combining streams of data to produce a final composite image. Go look up Bayer filters or arrays and possibly you might understand how this works to produce colour images.
I think you have demonstrated a common problem on this site, lack of knowledge on subjects being debated that leads to confusion and misunderstanding.
But that aside this satellite produces colour images of the parts of the earth every 10 mins so how do you explain that?
http://www.jma.go.jp/en/gms/
Are you tying to suggest that the images on this website show the earth to be flat?
-
Jora appeared to be unhappy about the nature of the Himawari-8 images being made up of different data streams! But we all know this is pretty normal when producing both still or moving images.
The satellite to provide accurate information takes many types of images depending on the end use or what it has been set to monitor.
I think it's difficult to see how the images produced by this satellite point to anything other than the earth being a sphere, as this animated sequence of images shows.
-
To start off I will quote Jora:-
Perhaps you should step up your game and put your war face on next time you challenge people of supperior intellect to a debate.
I have as yet seen no proof of any intellect from Jora let alone a superior one. Not understanding how colour images are produced was a bit of a red flag, if you ask me, pretty basic stuff. Up to this point I have seen no counter evidence produced, just a couple of rather off the mark statements.
Let's see how it develops.
-
There is no scientific debate on this form as the science of the earth is already well established and known. The facts have been established and the proof is there to discover for anyone who can put a stick in the ground. There is however pseudoscientific nonsense portrayed as truth which is anything but
It is very amusing though

You do know what a composite image is, right? Google does it all the time and they make people think it is a single image from outer space. Does it make you feel like you are smart to talk about something else? You do realize we have all been to school, right? Or, are you implying that you are the only intelligent person here?
It is almost like the roundies come here to educate us instead of actually putting together a rebuttal. Your ego makes me feel bad.

Yes, we do know. Do you?
Are you aware there are many types?
It is where you take multiple images and combine them.
This could be multiple images of separate sections stitched together as a single image like a panorama.
It could also be multiple images of a single section all stitched together, which can include multiple separate images of different colouration.
The true colour images we are discussing are the latter kind. You can get the raw B&W ones as well.

The original topic for this thread was:
Is there such a thing as a scientific debate on this site?
I think Jora's statement, shown above and below in red, answers that as his responses contain zero science. To summarise.
I posted links to images of the earth, clearly showing it is a sphere, that are produced by a Japanese weather satellite, Hmawari 8. The satalite takes images in a variety of ways to better study differing aspects of the weather. It takes true colour images that are very accurate. Jora appeared to take this method of producing 'true colour images' as something underhand! It does this form of post processing to achieve very accurate colour images....not to trick anyone, The Hybrid Atmospherically Corrected (HAC) true color method uses the red, green, and blue Himawari bands or streams of colour information, in addition to some information from bands 4 (0.86 micrometers) and 13 (10.4 micrometers). A Rayleigh correction is performed at each band in order to correct for the effects of Rayleigh scattering. The result is an image that is significantly more crisp and clear, and less milky, than without the correction.
It's almost like complaining about every tv or computer display, film or digital photo, on earth, as all of them involve some form of data stream mixing or post capture processing.
When this was pointed out to him he came back with the following un-scientific response. His answer was composed of the following:
I went to your link and did not find a single image of the entire Earth. Not sure what you want to debate. Yes, they have some cool looking images. Here you go, you obviously did not look too hard. I think this image along with the many hundreds produced each day is proof enough.

I think I've covered the whole composite image thing which appears to upset him in some way!
He then refers to himself as having a superior intellect. Now that may indeed be the case but I have as yet seen no evidence to prove his rather dubious assertion. His inability to grasp or understand composite images may put some doubt on his claim.
I'm not sure what he's getting at by using the 'war face term'.....again not very scientific, more confrontational.......but then again that's what this whole forum is about, it's a joke. We all know the earth is a sphere, yet people argue the toss about the most ridiculous things. Today for example we have:
https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=69832.0
This is from someone who has not got a single clue about basic physics, and yet is using his ignorance to try and prove the world is flat......however if you really think the earth is flat you have a big problem.....all the evidence out there is to the contrary. The only way open is not to counter it with science, as that's not possible, but to rubbish it and dismiss it along with abusing those who try to point out the truth of the matter.
And here we have Intikam trying to solve the energy crisis!
https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=68666.0
That's why my initial statement can never have an affirmative answer, as it is a pure oxymoron. How can there be a scientific debate on this forum when one side operates on science while the other operates on a combination of ignorance, belief, pseudoscience, conspiracy theories supercharged with plain denial.
I predict if Jora does come back with a reply it will contain some or possibly all of the following:
Total denial of the evidence presented.
Mild abuse directed at either me or main stream science.
No scientific content refuting the points I have made.
Another claim of him possessing superior intellect
......but I may be wrong time will tell.
-
Let me let you people in on a little secret. Back in the 1940s, the US military would take lots of pictures and stitch them together to make one big picture, as if it were taken from outer space. You act like this technology never existed, and then present images as proof of a round Earth, as if the longitude and latitude lines do not give away the fact that this image has been manipulated. ::)

Fail, Jroa. Just because someone somewhere sometime stitched together some pictures does not prove that all pictures are stitched together. "I bet your family vacation pictures were photoshopped, because they've been doing that since the 1940s. Don't deny!"

I will concede your point that past events are not evidence for events of today if you will concede my point that images can not be taken as absolute proof because image manipulation is an old technology. Fair enough?

Fair enough....afraid not old chum...life does not work that way, neither does the truth.
I think you would have to obtain proof that the Japanese weather agency can fake images with accurate weather system information every 10 mins 24/7 every day of the year as well as all the other data it provides.
The images it provides is used to provide weather forecasts.
But I'm liking your tone...reasonable...I think it's called, it suits you.

Are you implying that there really are lines of latitude and logitude running around the globe, like this picture from one of your own links, or will you finally admit that image manipulation has taken place?

I can't believe NASA never thought to get rid of the gridlines! Did they think sharp, scientific minds like jroa's would fail to notice this?

Let me let you people in on a little secret. Back in the 1940s, the US military would take lots of pictures and stitch them together to make one big picture, as if it were taken from outer space. You act like this technology never existed, and then present images as proof of a round Earth, as if the longitude and latitude lines do not give away the fact that this image has been manipulated. ::)
No. We don't act like that technology never existed.
However you like pretending that things don't exist, dismissing them as fake/CGI.
I will concede your point that past events are not evidence for events of today if you will concede my point that images can not be taken as absolute proof because image manipulation is an old technology. Fair enough?
We are not providing them as proof.
We are providing them as evidence.
Yes, there are images with grid-lines added, some have the continents outlined. That is all very simple to do.
Creating weather patterns which match reality would be next to impossible.
You can also get the originals.

Oh come on now....that's just being silly. You really go out your way to be awkward.
There are some images with longitude and latitude put on them, for a reason, while there are some that don't. They are not produced to be pretty pictures to convince flat earth believers that we live on a globe, they are produced for weather forecasting, hence the need for datum lines.
What you are very good at is picking holes, but your very very poor at producing any alternative evidence. Why is that? Because you can't. It's impossible to produce evidence of any sort for a flat earth because it's a sphere.
The earth is a sphere and that's the way it is as the evidence is overwhelming. However you are quite at liberty to believe the earth is any shape you like.
People believe in all sorts of things so I suppose if you feel the need for whatever reason to think the earth is flat.....then on you go.......

Of course not. There are some flat earthers who have studied a little more to include some bigger words in their theories and there's some that are clearly just trolling or dumb. I like flat earthers though because they make you learn more about the planet we live on because of their endless questions that you have to answer. It's intriguing to learn more about this planet. Fascinating stuff.
