Title: Do you guys actually believe the Earth is flat?

Or are you just doing it ironically for some sort of satisfaction?

There are some here who actually believe this. 'Believe' is the operate word. They don't accept any observation (even their own), except 'it looks flat when I look outside my window'.

That is the soul basis for their belief.

There literally is nothing else.

All arguments they make to keep their belief can be traced back to that one statement: 'it looks flat so it is flat'.

I think in this forum, there are 2...maybe 3 people that really believe the earth is flat. They're either insane or retarded.

Of course I, and most of the flat Earthers, believe the Earth is flat.  There might be a few here trolling, like the round Earthers, who come here day after day making the exact same arguments.

Spacecow might really believe in flat earth, but she's a redneck so it doesn't count.

Or are you just doing it ironically for some sort of satisfaction?

at the moment im swinging towards a round earth (naturally since this is what i was taught growing up), but i am very open minded to the idea of a flat earth, which is why im here.
you should not assume your current knowledge is correct and disregard all theories that go against it without looking into them, thats just not how you get a proper conclusion. that is how most conspiracy theories get blown out of proportion.

anybody with a need to better themselves (FEer or REer) will take on new information and look at it from a non-biased point of view in order to understand things better.

we are all wrong at some point in our lives.

Don't take their word for it, go outside and do your own experiments. Two weeks ago, I used my telescope and saw the ISS, so I know it is round.

His thread is a great read. But you don't have to leave, it's fun here. lol. I've seen the ISS, seen shuttles launch, used my telescope to view the stars, all of which can used to figure out that we do in fact live on a globe.

great thread. the stars thing is what i was going to ask next. in fact i still will because i first want to understand how the stars act in the FE model. maybe they spin around earth? but thats for another thread

EDIT:
never mind, ive just woken up. the patterns would still not happen on a FE even if the stars did rotate around the earth.

I think the earth could be a plane and not a globe.  I'm coming from the standpoint that we're lied to right and left about everything.  Deception is so pervasive, seems we're forever having to cut through a bunch of crap to get to the truth.

I am, however, a geocentrist.  I believe that the earth is stationary and that the sun, etc., go around it.  Now whether the sun is going around a globe, or hovering over a disc--that's something I'd like to know.

For me the jury is still out.

Jesus Christ was teaching Jews how to be poor so Roman conquerers won't be able
to collect taxes and finance the conquesring army to stay there.
Similar strategy Gandhi used in India recently against Brits.

It worked.

Christianity started to spread in other Roman colonies.
Romans first tried to exterminate them.
They were "thrown to lions in arenas, crucified all the way along roads,
and still their numbers grew.

Last step Romans took is when Constantine I assembled First Nicaea Council,
where they composed Bible, and gave newly created Church authority to
slowly reshape Christianity for the purpose of Roman rule.

It was so successful that Europe had 1000 years of Dark Ages,
and Christianity ruled pretty well, more or less.
At least always had big influence in world's politics.
That influence was sometimes so "wrong" that Protestants in Germany
and Anglicans in Britany permanently separated from Roman Catholic Church.

(Roman Catholics separated from the rest of Christians 1054 AD for other reasons.
One was to establish Pope as "God on Earth": Supreme authority and Errorless.)

Vandals ruined Rome, but you can see where was later the Holy Roman Empire.

In all that, Church still never abandoned ancient knowledge that the Earth was sphere.
Static, in the center of Heavens, but since everything on Earth tends to the center,
it all compresses it into sphere.

Virtually every scholar, even during Dark Ages, knew the Earth is sphere
and could calculate diameter, area, volume.

Later, for Renaissance, Copernicus, Bruno, Galileo and others were showing that
GeoCentrism (EgoCentrism) is not real, Sun is much bigger than Earth and other planets,
Bruno was burnt, Galileo almost burnt, and so on.

Force could always keep truth hidden for some time, but never forever.
Heliocentric system couldn't be distorted any more and hidden from ordinary people.

Few people are trying to revert history back to GeoCentrism (and Church rule),
and even go step further, introducing Flat Earth as consequence of
Rowbotham's deception in 19th century, but people are less amd less superstitious.

They want to KNOW.
Belief and Dogma is not enough any more.

It is fine to believe that the earth is still and everything moves around it, but it makes calculations a hell of a lot more complicated.

I suspect that some people are here for fun, the way that some others are involved in Star Trek websites as if it were reality.
And others, like me, are here because it's an easy opportunity to argue.
And, frankly, to most people even in the modern world, the real shape of the planet does not affect their lives, so it's a purely academic discussion.
The number of people here who seriously believe that the earth is flat, immobile, etc., is probably around two dozen.

Why do you include jroa in your list? You know he is not a real FEer. I doubt you are either. Initkam is for sure. Daniel, Davis, Ski, JRowe and maybe sandokhan might be although I'm sure they have their doubts. Most of the rest on your list are just goofing around like jroa IMO.

Why do accuse everybody of being angry? Especially when your "victim" never gave a thought of anger till you brought it up.

So many Flat Earthers (you, Flat Earth Scientist, sceptimatic and many others) pass judgment on the psychological state of others, so I thought I would "join the club".
But, being a complete tyro at this sort of thing, I sought the ultimate professional help Dr Google, PhD in everything.
And I believe I have found the offending syndrome (I've no idea what that is, but it sounds cool).

For another example of a defense, let's look at "projection," and we are all familiar with this.
         1) The angry person accuses someone else being angry
         2) A liar accuses others of lying
         3) The cheater accuses others of cheating
         4) The thief accuses others of stealing (Notice how the thief is not accusing others of lying? No he's obsessed with only his own sins.)

Projection is not just a Freudian defense mechanism, it a powerful tool for justifying aggression.
. . . . .
And here's projective identification:
         1) An angry person accuses their victim of being angry, until the victim becomes angry.

From Psychology Of Hatred Part II: Projection & Projective Identification (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/5/12/1187645/-Psychology-Of-Hatred-Part-II-Projection-Projective-Identification)

I could name some people to whom the first three in that list apply.
Some of these sure seem to fit some at least of the above. Lots of interesting stuff in that article.

With the then dozens of FEers relative to the number of REers on this site taken as a ratio of general Earth population, you could estimate the number of total FEers on the Disc.

It could even be as high a number that existed before the RE movement came into being.  The population explosion is made up of...yes members of the RE pack.

FET has a much longer historical timeline and this intrusion of RET is temporary and just because its membership is currently higher does not equate to correct Earth shape determination.

Possibly, but he is not the only one ascribing motives to others - look at Sceppy, he doesn't joke.
In that post I did make quite a big mistake. I named "Flat Earth Scientist", all his posts are "jokes", when I meant "Humble_Scientist".

He was always psychoanalysing his "opponents",  but we don't see much of him lately. He would post this sort of stuff.

Rabinoz, my old buddy, I've never expected reading that NASA document can make you so over-excited. I remember that you almost died of excitement last fall while chatting with me. rabinoz, you have been here long enough to realize this forum attracts trolls. Sometimes they are the fun kind who just want to make people laugh, but we have been plagued by a certain type (maybe even the same person) who takes great pleasure in pretending to diagnose us with mental illnesses. Sometimes the targets are RE, sometimes they are FE.  Do you object when the target of these internet diagnoses are FE, or do you give them a reach around?

I'll give you intikam and sandokhan - they seem to put in a lot of groundwork which I don't think anyone would do unless they had some sort of belief in it. If you insist to me that you think the earth is flat then I'll believe you - why would you lie? So you make 3.

Some on your list I've not been around long enough to see their posts. The rest, I think, are pretending. I get the impression John Davis would like to believe but I don't think he does.

John Davis has been arguing for the FE for a really long time. I'm not sure why you wouldn't believe him, but you're entitled to your opinion.
