Go out at night and look at the moon. You know why it looks like a finger nail? Because of the Earth's shadow.

Are you saying that the phases of the moon are caused by the Earth's shadow?  ???

I think he is saying that the moon's spooky likeness to a finger nail is caused by earth's shadow.
