Title: Why can't we feel "the wind"?
Post by: mosFET on March 17, 2013, 11:41:28 AM
At the end of this documentary, the scientist says that if the Earth were round and spinning at 1000 miles an hour, that you would feel wind just like when you stick your hand out of a speeding car.
But, the Earth is flat and moving straight upwards. In that case, why don't we feel a strong wind coming from above?

Actually it's completely relevant.

My wind usually comes from bellow.

The Earth must be one big hole!!!

just as an aside, that song has always deserved a better video.

Actually it's completely relevant.

Incorrect.

Its relevant because in the video, the guy says that we should feel 1000 mph winds going from side to side, as if we were driving a car at 1000 mph.

In answer to OP, there are so many different versions of FE, that its totally bonkers to try to learn 'em all. Apparently, these guys believe in gravity, which a lot of FErs don't. They don't accept a universal accelerator either, so using this video doesn't really help much for trying to understand FES.

Also, these guys have as much capacity to understand relativity as Skeptimatic. Hilarious.

I was not responding to the imbecilic claims made in the video, I was responding to the unfounded implication made by the OP. The viewpoint of some lunatic on YouTube is not my concern.

Why should we feel a strong wind coming from above?
why should be feel a strong wind coming from the side?

The scientist in the video says:
"If you put your hand outside of the window of a car which is going even 80 km per hour a terrific wind goes by and blasts your hand back. Imagine putting your hand outside a car which is going 1600 km per hour, it would just take your hand off."

That is said by a scientist who believes the earth is flat. Well, then how can we move upwards with an acceleration of 9,8 m / s^2 and not feel any wind? Sometimes there is wind, sometimes there is no wind. But still we are moving upwards with the same acceleration.

Since the acceleration is constant, there should always be wind, right?

You should discuss that with Sceptimatic.

That documentary is horribly inaccurate, and it's a fake documentary designed to promote critical thinking. It's a teacher's aid based on the incorrect assumption that FET is impossible. We understand relativity, thank you very much.

But it is shared here on the FE-society as if it were very serious. I'm certainly not the first person to post this video here.

Thank you. for the longest time I thought it was an accurate representation of the average FE person. If you say its fake, than fine, I believe that.  ;D

What makes you think he is actually a scientist?

1. He is presented as a scientist
2. This video is shared by The Flat Earth Society, so they must believe that it is a truthful video
3. If you question everything. you can never get to a conclusion. For example, if you question if Obama really exists, if the American senate really exists, if politics really exists, if the war in Afghanistan really exists, if the news presented on TV really exists, then it may take a long time before you can conclude that Americans are involved in the war in Afghanistan. Sometimes you have to assume things (but remember it is all based on an assumption).

Individual members may have referred to that video before, but they weren't officially representing FES in doing so.  If they want to defend the video, they're free to do so.

Out of curiosity, who does officially represent the FES.  That would be important to know.

Because theres no fantastic 1030mph wind.  Because the solid Earth cant set in constant centrifugal motion a gas as the Air, which blows here and there.  Because if people traveled to west they would have to beat this crazy non existent wind. Because if the Earth was rotating it would cause thrilling winds that would throw all stupid heliocentrists to the utmost darkness of Tartarus.

If you accelerate upwards at a constant rate of 9,8 m/s^2, do you have any idea how much wind that would cause? Why don't we feel a constant wind because of this acceleration? Usually there is less wind at night. All the sand in the desert should be blown away because the Earth is accelerating upwards. Conclusion: the Earth is not accelerating upwards as proposed by the FES.

1. He is presented as a scientist
And all the dentists in toothpaste commercials are real dentists who legitimately believe that Toothpaste X is the best. Don't trust everything you see on YouTube.

2. This video is shared by The Flat Earth Society, so they must believe that it is a truthful video
Who was it shared by, specifically? Where, specifically, was it shared? There is no one around here who claims to represent the entire society's views. For example, I have recently shared this video of myself (http://#ws) on these fora. However, this doesn't mean that the Flat Earth Society suddenly believes that I actually danced in space (or that the Earth is round, even though this video does imply it!).

Long  story short - no, just because it was shared "by the Flat Earth Society" does not mean that the Flat Earth Society subscribes to the views presented.

3. If you question everything[...]
Don't question everything - but do question people who claim to be scientists without showing any evidence of the fact. They're likely lying.

Never thought about this before. When I travel in my car and put my head out the window, the wind is unbelievable. If the earth is going that fast, surely the wind would be even faster than when in my car? Some scientist will probably be wheeled out to explain that there are "forces" stopping the wind, but then why can we not reproduce those same "forces" to prevent the wind when I'm going fast in my car?

Are you posting about relativity again? Please stop. I will not tell anyone why electromagnetic acceleration should or should not work because I have no frikkin clue about it. Someone else can. You need to post about religious things because it seems that is your area of expertise.

Are you trying to disprove a rotating earth again? Well ironically, the fact that the earth rotates means we don't feel this 'wind'...
