Sort of an off-shoot of Supertails' Missing People thread. Just post or talk about super weird things. I feel like I've read everything kinda strange so I'd love to be introduced to new mysteries. I even own a book of the world's mysterious things. Try and give me something new plx.
Something new I learned today.

Will have to give it some thought - am going to bed now - it's late here.

The WOW! signal, or any of the other 11 we have received which meet all but one (verifiability) of the criteria for contact with extraterrestrial life.
Fun fact: 8 of the 11 come from near the plane of the Milky Way, which is an extremely low probability.
Source is Carl Sagan in Pale Blue Dot.
This and the various unexplained noises that microphones have picked up from the ocean: sounds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unexplained_sounds)

The coolest thing about those sounds is the sound that came from roughly where Lovecraft placed R'lyeh.

Cool, I haven't seen that one. I love reading about the mysteries I haven't heard of yet.

I'm not sure if I posted this one before. It's not particularly strange, but the details are kinda scary.

I am reading a book called "13 Things That Don't Make Sense" by Michael Brooks. It talks about all sorts of things from the SETI recordings (WOW signal), cold fusion, placebos, to defining what life actually is, why there is a need for sex, not having free will and homeopathy. I could go on, but I would strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in trying to make sense of this wonderful universe we live in.
On a related note, I am also reading "What We Believe In but Cannot Prove" which is a book full of a series of articles written by 'leading thinkers in science in the age of certainty'. Again, it makes you re-think the way we view our world.
But back to weird things; the Pioneer space probe anomaly. Why are these 2 spacecraft flouting the laws of physics? And more importantly, if they were a test of Newtonian Laws, which they failed, why are we not taking the results seriously?

This was a great idea. I read these before going to sleep and the German homicide story scared the crap out of me.

Not to derail the thread.. But there's still a few mathematical problems that are unsolved, as well as the problems with a unified physics.

Reasonable, but the injuries of the people lacked tissue damage which is what makes the injuries so bizarre. And you could see everyone's footprints which seems unlikely after an avalanche. The deep tan makes perfect sense though.

Women in general don't count as strange and mysterious. Please stop, I just want to read and share weird things.

I watched the Noel Fielding Luxury Comedy show yesterday. That qualifies as weird. I liked it.

Good website for a reasonable look at mysterious stuff (mostly UFO's and monsters). A bit wordy and the font colour contrasts with the background.

They do to men. After all, how can women bleed for days at a time every month without dying?

Lots of men understand women. I'm sure you're aware we don't just bleed, we're dropping our uterine lining and unfertilized egg. Blood just adds the coloring, it's mostly mucus.

Yes, grossed out. There is nothing good about it.

Everything is natural. Therefore, according to this logic, nothing is disgusting.

PS: everything related to growing and birthing children is pretty gross. Periods aren't anymore nasty than a runny nose, guys are only squeamish cause it's crazy foreign lady stuff.

If you keep bleeding through the nose when you get a cold, I suggest you see a doctor. Alternatively, if all that comes out on your period is green gooey mucus I recommend you see a doctor.

I guess you missed the post where I said blood mainly adds color, the rest is uterine lining and mucus (which is almost everywhere inside your body).

Bruising only occurs because of broken blood vessels; the cold conditions could have reduced the tissue damage so that it wasn't detectable.

Anyone else heard of those strange sunken "cauldrons" in Siberia? The area they're allegedly located is known as the "Valley of Death" - so named for the significant levels of radiation to be found there. There used to be details about this region on Wikipedia that have since disappeared, and now the only information I can find is on less than reputable UFO and Bigfoot websites. I'm really curious about what the hell these things actually are and I wish someone would just drain one of those weird ponds already.
Here is a sketch done by a geologist in 1936, while they were still partially above ground:

Cool, I haven't heard of this. You're right about the UFO and bigfoot bit, hopefully I can find something with more substance.

My favorite shortwave radio oddity, UVB-76, or the "Buzzer". It has been continuously running since (at least) 1982, interrupted occasionally by automated Russian spelling alphabet and number messages. Lately, in 2010, live messages have been broadcast. Incredibly informative things like

I've been to some Anasazi ruins before.
That first one's description of that dog was great.
Good stuff, thanks Vindictus.
-
Also, that last link didn't work, Vindictus.
-
It was a joke, but it should be fixed now.
I've been to some Anasazi ruins before.
What were they like? It's pretty hard to get frightened at all by stories like that because there's an ocean separating them from me.
-
There are a lot of pictures you can look up. But they've endured really well since they're so high up on cliff faces. They're just kinda creepy because they are extremely old and the Anasazi did basically disappear. That could be for a number of reasons, they could have built so defensively because of warring tribes and were eventually just killed off or assimilated. It's true that there is a lot of superstition behind them and they were enemies of the Navajo. The word Anasazi can translate to "ancient people", "Navajo enemy", or "old stranger" so some people think they could have been aliens or at least abducted by aliens which is obviously ridiculous.
Anyway, it can be a little eery when thinking about the mystery surrounding them and seeing their nearly perfect structures. Plus, that part of the country can feel very empty and isolated, I can absolutely understand how people can be very superstitious out there.
-

Yeah it was already posted, but definitely the kind of thing I'm looking for. There are so many links there though that if you liked a specific one you could point me to it.
I have family in Point Pleasant, West Virginia so I went there a lot while growing up. During my teenage years I learned about the Mothman and everything that allegedly happened there. My great aunt was a neighbor to John Keel's cop friend (can't remember her name) and they talked a lot about the stuff going on, my aunt was even in Keel's documentary. She told me about seeing UFOs (never the Mothman though) and how she watched her cop neighbor deteriorate throughout the ordeal. And my mom was even very close to being on the bridge when it collapsed.

But that last link was interesting. Poor, stupid dogs.
-
http://www.reddit.com/r/Thetruthishere/ (http://www.reddit.com/r/Thetruthishere/) is good for creepy stories that are supposed to be real (even though some clearly aren't).
-
Yeah unit 731 is one of those things that surprises me in that nobody has ever heard of it. None of my friends. None of my teachers. It's pretty terrible, although I am sure a lot of interesting stuff was left unnoticed in the chaos of that time period.
