Hello, I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place, seeing as I have just joined this forum...
Anyways, I am a Freshman in high school, and I need to give a persuasive speech. My speech must have three main points to support my idea, mention the opposing view, and have 7 types of sources cited in the speech. 4 of these sources have to be different types (book, website, magazine, etc.)
What I really need help with is the sources and three strong main points, so if anyone could help me.... that would be great! :)

Or you could read Earth Not a Globe by Samuel Rowbotham a.k.a. Parallax. It's available free on line here: http://www.sacred-texts.com/earth/za/za00.htm

Unless you go to a hippie high school, or unless you don't care about your grades and social life, I would highly recommend NOT doing a presentation on the flat earth. It would be social suicide. Presenting on a controversial issue is one thing... trying to present that the Earth is flat is something else. Not trying to give merit to either side, but you will just be laughed at.

Rowbotham lectured for 20 odd years about the Earth being flat and he did fairly well for himself.

He lived back in the 1800's, where there was not as much proof of a flat earth as there was today. There was not that many people sailing (and seeing the famous "masts is visible before the rest of the ship")or flying around the world back then, or using GPS, or seeing many countries send rockets, sattelites and manned spaceflights into space, and there was not that much of a globalisation either. There was not that many big towers etc that could be used to see how the world curve first-hand.
Today you would get ANNIHILATED for saying something this stupid in public, and actually believing it.
(in before "The Conspiracy", "bendy light", "circum-navigation", "huge ice wall guarded by 600 men on snow-mobiles", "huge GPS-towers everywhere" etc etc)
And the only reason he did well, was because he was well-spoken and idiots actually believed him. No-one here is well-spoken (no-one answers questions or come up with sound theories and try to counter Round Earth "theories"). Its all just "its the conspiracy", "look out the window, the earth is flat", "read the faq noobs" etc. But ofcourse there will always be idiots that will believe anything and people make lots of money off of that. Scientology, the moon-landing-was-a-hoax, 9/11 etc

But he never tried to convince a bunch of his indoctrinated, pubescent, extremely judgmental peers.

I gave a speech once about how in Canada, milk comes in bags. I had the class in tears it was so perfect. I suggest just taking the FAQ and morph it to your speaking style. As for sources, dig up Tom Bishop's signature.

Brilliant.

Absolutely horrible idea.
Reasons:
1. There are no plausible or reasonable arguments supporting the FE theory
2. FE idiots are mentally challenged, so they won't be able to provide help
3. It is definite scientific FACT, that the Earth is spherical.
4. You will be laughed at and people will know that you are a retard.

I just stumbled on this thread and I'm a little confused. Why do you guys hang out on this forum? I've been here a few days and it is clear that some people here are complete insane, but it seems there are some sane people sprinkled in.
-
As near as I can figure, every person who has posted in this thread so far is a "round earther". The attitudes displayed in each response has caused me to forget which theory is the retarded one.
If it needs help eating or going to the bathroom then it's retarded.

My father needed help eating and going to the bathroom before he passed away and he was not retarded. Thanks a lot you insensitive prick. >:(
-
Don't make anything like this if you wan't to keep your credibility. FE is supported by NO evidence or observations. It's as stupid if not even more as for example creationism

I didn't know your father. Therefore it is not insensitive.

You made a blanket assertion without knowing any facts. Insensitive or ignorant. Either way, you're still a prick.

The point is, it doesn't matter if FE is wrong or not. He will be absolutely, positively, be ridiculed. His social life will be over. So unless he believes so strongly that the Earth is flat that he is willing to sentence himself to becoming a pariah, he should definitely NOT present on a Flat Earth.
-
If he says it with a little laughter in the soul,he will be praised not mocked. L2KNOWHOWTOHAZASOCIALLIFEZ.

I do suggest that you get all aspects of the theory down well, and practice with friends/family. This way,you won't look like an idiot up there.
-
I've decided that I'm just going to make my speech as funny and stupid as possible, and provide a few laughs. Hopefully my teacher has a sense of humor, and I get away with at least a D minus...

I think hes going to be looking like an idiot because hes trying to convince people the earth is flat. I think youd get a better response your way, just make it funny. Tell them about the ice wall, that always gets a good laugh.

Would be pretty easy to make your speec as funny and stupid as possible - just say the Earth is flat and quote the FAQ etc. :)
-
ive got many good laughs out of telling my friends in detail, which can take up to 6 mins and is kinda like a speech i guess :P. Just try that, will be awesome.

OR you could actually make it educational. Making it "as funny and stupid as possible" isn't going to help anyone. It might make you feel superior to make fun of flat earthers for a few minutes but at the end of the day your goal should be to enlighten people with your speech. It's an oral presentation, not a comedy routine. I hope you do get a D minus.
-
What evidence have you got that the Earth is actually flat? There's the Bedford level experiment (which disagrees with bendy light) and probably some more along that line (which have never been confirmed by proper scientists, right, just FEers?).
-
Is there any particular reason the OP chose this topic, which not only arguing is going to be difficult, but finding SEVERAL academically sound sources for his speech is going to be impossible.
Supman.... take my advice and do a speech arguing that Corvus corax, the common raven, is the most intelligent bird species. Thats a reasonable topic, the center of a TON of well-documented, actual research... and actually probably true.
-
if i knew this theory was still around when i was in high school (7-11 years ago) i would have done my persuasive speech... as long a people know you are not serious (not saying if you are its a bad thing) i think its a good idea on a tough subject.
then you need to start a thread and put your speech in it
-
Hey, little nooblets, this thread was made back in May.

meh true, I hope the guy at least gave a disclaimer before his speech. Personally, I want to know how it went
