Two Questions:
1. If NASA is the one benefitting from the conspiracy, why did people, including the world's smartest scientists, think that the world was round before then?
2. How did Magellan sail around the world going straight? And don't tell me the government rigged his compass.
-
1. If NASA is the one benefitting from the conspiracy, why did people, including the world's smartest scientists, think that the world was round before then?
Inference.
2. How did Magellan sail around the world going straight? And don't tell me the government rigged his compass.
In the FAQ.
-
Do you guys know how to answer questions? Everytime someone raises a valid point, you say "It's in the FAQ." Your FAQ's have no valid sources, so why should anyone believe that? I could make a site that says that the Earth is actually a giant pizza and write anything I want. Give me a valid source. Why is the thing about the conspiracy an inference? People knew the world was round back then, and NASA wasn't around. Most of the flat earthers say that NASA makes the money, so who made the money before then. Go into detail and back up your points. What scientific study do you have that proves your point about compasses?
-
You asked how Magellan could have sailed around the world. All you need to answer that is a possible map, which we have in the FAQ.
-
Who was this map created by? What valid source do you have that made it?
-
2. How did Magellan sail around the world going straight? And don't tell me the government rigged his compass.
The layout of the Flat Earth is similar to the emblem of the United Nations. Magnetic North is at the center of the disk. Since East and West are always at right angles to North, traveling on that bearing will take you in a circle around the North Pole.
-
Ok, who created this flat earth layout? What qualifications do they have? What evidence do they have besides things that are circumstancial?

It was created by the class of 2 year olds in a nursery class, that proves it for me!

Don't even ask about compasses dude. I asked a month or more ago how come you would need two different balances of compasses in a flat earth and no one could answer the question. Everything they believe is based on what they see out of their window. The Earth looks flat, it must be flat. The theories of the people with in the society don't line up with each other. They all have different theories. Some that the earth is an infinite plane, some not. Some that the tides are caused by sloshing, some not. Some believe that the UN map is the Map, others say there is no map. They can't get their facts straight, that's why you never get a straight answer. I bet half of them, haven't even paid their dues to the society. I'm tempted to pay the ten bucks just for the freaking news letter. I need a good laugh now and then... :D
I think the whole thing should be changed to Flat Earth Theories. Or better yet, Flat Earth Hypothesis...
-
I asked a month or more ago how come you would need two different balances of compasses in a flat earth and no one could answer the question.
Because you wouldn't.

But you do today. You can't buy a compass in North America and take it to Brazil. It won't work.

C-Ray is right. A special compass is needed as you get closer to the poles because the magnetic field lines become vertical.
http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/aug98/899130154.Es.r.html
The author notes that a special compass with an axle is already needed for navigation in latitudes past Seattle, Washington. Compasses are only really usable on a relatively narrow part of the earth centered over the equator.
This is all due to the magnetic layout of the earth. In the Round Earth model the magnetic layout looks like this
(http://www.physics.ubc.ca/~outreach/phys420/p420_01/shaun/shaun/whyit7.jpg)
In the Flat Earth model the magnetic field lines looks something like this:
The vertical and horizontal component of the Magnetic Field lines are identical at every latitude. As you get closer to the areas where the field lines are vertical the compass attempts to point downwards and scrapes along the bottom of the compass and stops working. In the Arctic and Antarctic circles it's actually impossible to use a magnetic compass since the magnetic field lines are almost exactly vertical. Navigators must use the Sun Compass and Gyrocompass for navigation.
-
The author notes that a special compass with an axle is already needed for navigation in latitudes past Seattle, Washington.
I find that hard to believe.
People of Canada, do you use normal compasses?
-
There is no such thing as a normal compass. You buy a compass in the area to be used, or you by a global balanced compass that can be used anywhere.
Thank you Tom. Although, your graphic of Flat Earth Magnetic fields either didn't go through, or just isn't showing up for me. I'd very much like that included in your post if it can be fixed.
Edited for the thank you to Tom. Answer appreciated.

Compass without an axle.
-
A compass on an axle is one that is not able to tilt as much when the magnetic lines begin to become vertical. Most expensive, relative term, that you would buy for navigation purposes are this way.

So it's backwards from what Tom said?

I see nothing in my post contradicting what Tom said.
-
So back to my question then.
-
What's the question?

So the FE core is a sphere! LOL!
-
yeah the flat earth model likes really professional. i'm sure that's from a valid and great source that knows how to spell "the".
-
The flat earth model looks unprofessional because the round earthers have all the money. It's a conspiracy remember.
-
It was drawn by a person who doesn't know how to spell "the." If some actual scientist who had real credentials and real evidence instead of just speculation thought the Earth was flat, he could draw up a good model. It's not true that everyone who believes the earth is round is rich, and everyone who plays the earth is flat is poor. The people who run this website obviously make money, and I'm sure there are people here that are upper middle class to rich.
-
I was joking. The FE answer to everything is that there is a conspiracy with a profit motive.
-
Well, no responses. I guess we win?
-
That picture is classic.
Tom you never let me down.
-
Well, I guess you guys are wrong...Well that's kinda obvious though.
-

First of all, this website does not make money. You'd think that that would be obvious from the lack of ads.
Second of all, I'm not sure where this vast overestimating of conspiracy members is coming from. There is no reason for any private scientist to be in the conspiracy, and no serious debater on this site has ever argued as such.
-
I didn't say this website made a lot of money; people make livings doing other things. It would be economic suicide for any real business to advertise on this website, but that's not the point. Give me a qualified peer-reviewed (on the flat earth part) scientist who thinks the Earth is flat.

Just because those who practice mainstream science think the earth is flat doesn't mean it is. Most of them probably haven't even been exposed to the evidence we have, and we may be able to thank the Conspiracy for that.
-
I'm sure a few scientists have seen this website (and had a few good laughs). So wait a second here, every respectable scientist disagrees with you, and you say you're right? Who came up with/discovered your evidence? It must not be a scientist... ??? I could make up a theory, come up with my own evidence that can easily persuade someone, and then make a website about it, but it doesn't mean it's right. I'd also like to go back to my first question: When did this conspiracy start? Most flat earthers that I've debated with say that NASA is making the money, so who made the money before NASA?
-

The person most often credited for proving the flatness of the earth is Dr Samuel Birley Rowbotham, who wrote Earth Not a Globe.
I'd also like to go back to my first question: When did this conspiracy start? Most flat earthers that I've debated with say that NASA is making the money, so who made the money before NASA?
It's really hard to say for sure with such sparse documented evidence. Some say the earliest roots of the Conspiracy lie with the Bavarian Globe Makers Guild; still others point back to the Royal Astronomical Society. But it's questionable whether either of these groups have anything to do with the modern Conspiracy headed by NASA. NASA was the first to claim incontrovertible proof that the earth is round, and they've clearly profited a great deal from convincing the rest of the world (perhaps in concert with other space agencies) of this lie.
-
You asked how Magellan could have sailed around the world. All you need to answer that is a possible map, which we have in the FAQ.
that map is wrong so it can't be considered a valid map.

But you do today. You can't buy a compass in North America and take it to Brazil. It won't work.

Those magnetic fields don't match up with things like the aurora and where it's observed. You might answer 1 question here but your "theory" does not fit in with other things.
Neat looking drawing to bad its wrong.

The person most often credited for proving the flatness of the earth is Dr Samuel Birley Rowbotham, who wrote Earth Not a Globe.
Just out of curiosity, what exactly was Rowbotham a Doctor of?
-
Medicine, I believe. He was a healer.
-
Or a snake oil salesman. Back in his day, the odds would have been about even.
-
What qualifications does a medical doctor have in proving if the Earth is round or not? That's like hiring a chemist to do open heart surgery...
-
Neat looking drawing to bad its wrong.
Are you rewriting the physics of magnetism?
-
I'll ask again: What qualifications does a medical doctor have in proving if the Earth is round or not? That's like hiring a chemist to do open heart surgery...
-
I'll ask again: What qualifications does a medical doctor have in proving if the Earth is round or not? That's like hiring a chemist to do open heart surgery...
I've always assumed based on his breathtaking prose that he was a very learned man. Just because he was a doctor of medicine doesn't make him not qualified to judge the shape of the earth. His biggest critic was a biologist! Does that automatically disqualify him from judging Rowbotham's work? It's a straw man.
Rowbotham's method and his math are sound.

I thought his biggest critic (indirectly) was a surveyor.

Alfred Russel Wallace is best known for being a naturalist and biologist who influenced Charles Darwin. He was also an avid spiritualist. Yet he was somehow qualified to criticize Rowbotham's work.
My whole point was that just because he was a medical doctor doesn't mean he didn't have the expertise to judge the experiments that prove the shape of the earth. And his experiments are easily duplicatable, meaning anybody with access to a large body of water and some rudimentary equipment can prove that the earth is flat for themselves!

I don't know about that. Rowbotham seems to have gotten this experiment fundamentally wrong.

Alfred Russel Wallace is best known for being a naturalist and biologist who influenced Charles Darwin.
He was also a surveyor. Being "best known" for something does not mean a persons other achievements didn't happen.
Exactly my point about Rowbotham. Thanks for strengthening it.

My point was that just because Rowbotham was a medical doctor doesn't mean he wasn't qualified to judge the shape of the earth. Like it or not, you strengthened that point.

Ok, so there's two people that aren't physicists that have different views. What should we do? How about we look at what other scientists think? Find me a PHYSICIST that thinks the world is flat, and I'll find you one that thinks the world is round. Go!
-
Physicist (And Astronomer) That Thinks The Earth is round: Galileo Galilei. Ok, your turn. And don't avoid the question, as I know you will. I'm guessing I'm going to see something attacking Galileo. Give me someone that agrees with you, and THEN attack Galileo.
-
What terrestrial experiments did Galileo perform to prove that the earth is round?
-
@jmhudak17
Poor, poor Galileo. He went up against an established theory and look where it landed him. He was laughed at and placed under arrest. Remind you of anything?
-
The other was a quack.
Source?
-
Ok. Flat Earthers. If you really are legit, you can answer my question. I'll say it again:
Ok, so there's two people that aren't physicists that have different views. What should we do? How about we look at what other scientists think? Find me a PHYSICIST that thinks the world is flat, and I'll find you one that thinks the world is round. Go!

The question is an appeal to authority and therefore a fallacy.
500 years ago it was the Church deciding what constituted reality. Now it's the physicists. I wonder who it'll be 500 or 1000 years from now.
-
Ok flat earthers let's trying again. I see that you can dance around my questions, but it actually makes sense that physicists make decisions about physics. Ok, so answer my question. What physicists agree with you? Let's go.
-
The question is an appeal to authority and therefore a fallacy.
-
Actually it's an appeal to someone who has studied extensively the topic were talking about. Now let's answer the question. What physicists thinks that the earth is flat?
-
Actually it's an appeal to someone who has studied extensively the topic were talking about.
Exactly. An appeal to... authority.
-
Answer the question.
-
It's not a valid question.
-
Actually it's an appeal to someone who has studied extensively the topic were talking about.
Exactly. An appeal to... authority.
Appeal to authority is only a fallacy when the authority appealed to is not qualified in the field in question. And you know that Roundy. >:(

I've been saying that for ages. Quoting physicists to answer a question of physics may be an appeal to authority, but not a fallacious one. If physicists aren't the authority in physics, then who is? The same goes for astronomers to answer a question about astronomy. Flat Earthers should consider reading up on the definitions of fallacies before they start throwing accusations around.
Occam's razor would be another topic to read up on while they're at it. Tom seems to think the definition of Occam's razor is "the theory that I can explain in less words and simpler terms is always correct".
-
Ok, Roundy, then answer this. Is it true that no physicists, that you know of, agree with you?

My response below not only is in reference to the above quote but all other observations i made while reviewing this site. I have read your FAQ and many responses to threads on this site. If you are to make anyone a believer you should probably have the smartest of your cult or whatever it is answering people. The people giving responses do not seem to even have the enthusiasm to try debate your theory. And if you believe in it so strongly im sure one of your members has a enough money to bring you to the wall and you could have a radio or some device making contact to people back home. I think maybe your society is part of a conspiracy that has mislead you people maybe because of your same reasons that the government wants money or that you guys need attention and couldnt think of anything more believable???? I do appologize but after reading this site i am feeling very strong that there are people out there who dont see all the facts out there that make complete sense and have been proven! other remarks on here also state that we too must prove our beliefs and what i dont understand is that they have far more than anything i have seen on here.
While reviewing the article located at the link you sent i quickly noticed that their explanation constantly keeps using an example that if you keep TILTING your compass the marker will start to sway blah blah... notice how tilting brings you in a round circle. If you want to convince people of your theories i would only use links that do not use terms that go against your beliefs. Also we could forget about buying a bunch of different compases trying to travel in one direction. NO matter where you are the old process will still work with a leaf, water and a needle. So lets start an adventure with a couple round earlth believers and a couple flat earth believers and close this site when we arrive back at the same point without running into government guards at an ice wall. :) Also not everyone is 100% loyal to government, what about people who have small chit chat with friends or get fired would they not write a book or start talking about the conspiracy? I would also like to note that many responses to questions on this site are VERY POOR. Any other topic i want to learn about i get scientific facts even for things that have been researched for less than 7 years. How do you disagree with thousands of scientists not working for the government plotting out galaxies which definately not stand for so long if the world was indeed flat. I came to this site curious and have within 30 minutes been able to find scientific research that is NOT ALL DONE BY GOVERNMENT!!!! that goes against what you are saying. Another thread also had a quote that the government wouldnt shut down this site because it would confirm there was a conspiracy. We can probably all agree that if they were so smart to have a conspiracy this big your little site would be shut down due to an unexplained circumstance that would not be tracked back to the government. I think the 3000 members of this society should really start researching their beliefs and the scientists who are in your 'group' probably didnt get very far in school because isnt it known that scientists only believein facts!!! I am done ranting. No response really required because i most likely wont be back to this site. If anything your belief makes me sad that you are singling yourselves out from the rest of the world and would believe in some theory proven wrong in a million different ways. But if it makes you happy i am sure you are not hurting anyone.

You nice response Roundy. What the hell does tl dr mean? And let's go, answer my second question because you couldn't answer my first. Do you agree that no physicists that you know of agree with you that this Earth is flat?

tl; dr means "too long; didn't read" as in ch posted an irritating and headache-inducing wall of text and I wasn't going to read it.
I know of none. Now, explain to me what you think that proves.
-
Roundy is a lone gunman on a grassy knoll?
I choose to think of 'Roundy' in this quote representing the conspiracy. Seems apt. I may use it as my new term for the RE conspiracy.
-
This proves that no one with a background studying physics, which is what the RE/FE "debate" is (I hate to call it that), agrees with you. I could easily make up a theory about why the sun comes up every morning. I could say that the gravity of the Earth pulls the Sun towards it everyday. And then, I could make up something and say that reverse gravity pushes it away at night. It doesn't mean any of that is true.
