Ok. I went through this major nostalgia period where I was recapturing my somewhat short childhood by watching my fave t.v. programs, and right now I'm bored doing work on Milton's Paradise Lost...
so to cut to the chase: Since evolution is forever happening, do you think any mutant genes would occure to create a sort of, super-hero species?
I mean, not to the extent that Marvel Comics created, like telepathy, laser-beam eyes, weather-controlling powers etc... but anything like maybe that loser that hopped about like a frog and had a frog tongue?
Or Beast, who became all hairy and blue and stuff?
Or. Failing a decent discussion, just list what sort of power you'd like to evolve to. :|
-
no. Just stupid, horny ones that will breed a lot and vote conservative.
-
They must be stopped.
-
I doubt we will see any more evolving in Humans. Evolution is tied with Survival, and that is just not something we have to worry about in this day and age.
On the subject of mutations, I don't know. Telekinesis would be pretty bad ass. Jean Grey never used her power to the fullest. She could have crushed peoples heart and brain using her powers. Like instant kill hax.
-
haha. Except she had a conscience. She was an Xman. She could only use her powers for good. :|
-
Not when she went all menstrual and killed Scott.

I think this question reflects a misunderstanding of evolution that many people seem to carry. Evolution occured in extremely small degrees over massive amounts of time and generations. Before higher level reasoning in human consciousness humans evolved the same way all other life, only seeking out survival and having no "conscious" concern for the future of the species.
Evolution occurs when slight genetic variations are more adaptive in relation to the environment to survive. Human consciousness alters this slightly because the agents of the genes themselves have the ability to control the natural course of things. This is clear in birth control, how we have gone beyond our Darwinian urge to have sex for reproduction.
Where does this fit into a question about X-Men style genetic mutations developing into full bore mutants. The problem here is that for mutants like Beast the odds of a genetic mutation to form a creature like that right from the womb would be astronomical. A human was never born of an ape. For Beast to emerge in its furry, blue form it would almost certainly be a slow genetic family tree that would eventually grow to a sizable group. This means that there would be many Beasts and the Beastly qualities would be rather common place.
The problem of human consciousness also comes into play that along with our genetic dispositions (finding large hipped women attractive) there are piles of societal constraints (some people not liking large hips). You'd have to think that anyone exhibiting these Beast qualities would not be likely to reproduce. Now, I suppose if the mutations were benifitial (i.e. super strength) they would be valuable for mating however the point remains that it would eventually not be a unique characteristic.
Short answer....Don't expect your child to be born with lasers coming out of his eyes.

yeah cuz that could tear up a uterus. See, God wins.
-
Telekenesis in clearly imba. I mean, essentially you could do anything. Who wants powers of magnetism when you can lift anything? who wants just to be able to freeze things when you know kinetic theory?
With sufficient knowledge youd effectively be omnipotent.
That said, and assuming telekenesis is banned, id go for regeneration like that one off Heroes.
-
I've always wanted shape changing and super speed.
-
Is shape changing supposed to work by altering other's perceptions or by actually physically chaning the person? Cause couldnt you cut peices off yourself and them have them change their shape inside someone else, chestburster style. It would be the perfect assasination...
And assuming you dont need to retain the same mass, there are some pretty good things you can do with that as well.

well obviously, smart arse. I did biology and such.
It's a hypothetical question, and as clearly should have mentioned in my first post to avoid long rants from people like you. :P

Is it only me whos suprised at the lack of superheroes we got after Chernobyl?
I mean, surely we deserved at least one. Even a supervillain would have done, but they tend to be from science experiments gone wrong.
-
Which again is surprising...since I'm sure there have been scientific experiments going wrong left right and centre in the US or Russia.

Sometimes they go right... oh so very right...

....I don't think that's a scientific experiment. :P

Her family had to evacuate from Chernobyl while her mom was pregnant with her. Hmmm sounds kinda funny to me. I think Maria is a force for good though.

I believe that this is a plausible scientific area. I mean, animals mutate in real time. There is a case on the Animal Planet show about that island near the Rock of Gibraltar. The snakes that live on it, live nowhere else on planet earth, but INFEST that tiny little island. Point? The birds there are home-raised finches, and they have been shown to now be immune to the venom. They were accidentally set loose (the finches) in 1965 by tourists. If that is not evolution, I don't know what is.
The thing about mutation interests me. I will think about this and post more at another time.
-
Mutation happens all the time, but mostly in humans it forms cancers and genetic diseases, very rarely does it create superhuman abilities.
-
what if there was a cancer that fired lasers?

Examples of those aforementioned superhuman abilities being....what?
-
I heard of a girl who grew a nipple on her foot. Thats pretty impressive...although it was on something awful.
Breast-foot-girl could certainly prevent crime though.
"THE NIPPLE COMMANDS YOU RETURN THE GOLD!"
-
Well this man has bones, muscles, a heart, and his lungs, all much larger than they should be for his size. He looks overweight but constantly wins triathlons. I'd call him superhuman.

Superhuman ABILITIES, not LIABILITIES.

His heart and lungs are perfectly healthy. Though i may misunderstand you. He is in the shape of a collegiate athlete at the age of 40. I do not see this as a liability.

Quoted for the lol.

Peter Petrelli is the ultimate human.
-
spider baby
-
Peter Petrelli is the ultimate human.
Does that make Silar the penultimate human?
-
Peter Petrelli is the ultimate human.
Does that make Sylar the penultimate human?
Peter will always own Sylar, because he doesn't have to kill someone to get their power. Plus he stops time, now that's just cool.
-
I realize that, but if Peter is the ultimate, wouldn't that make Silar the penultimate? Of course just absorbing powers by being near them is far superior to having to steal them, but being able to steal multiple powers is still better then only having one. That's why Silar isn't the best, but the second best.

Actually, since Sylar has intuition, (that's His power I think) how knows how the powers he takes work, so he would be able to control it better, in my opinion.
I think that a cool power to have would be quantum, you could be in multiple places at once, you could walk through walls and you could teleport and all sorts of other neat stuff.

ITT We talk about Heroes.
When the hell does the next season start? Or Heroes Orgins? That was supposed to air a little bit after the second season ended, but the writers strike pushed it back.

I hope either:
a)The strike is settled soon, or
b) The strike wrecks the oscars so it gets resolved.
I want season 3- "Villains" Sylar is back, defend your brains!
I read somewhere that Sylar and Adam may meet and join forces... I don;t see that happening.
-
I can't see Adam joining forces with Sylar. Unless Adam has no idea what Sylar is. I mean...Adam is wise. Dude has been around forever. I think he could deduce that Sylar would just stab him in the head with an ice pick and eat his brains. Shit I miss Heroes. >.<
Yeah, Writers Strike is retarded. Just give them what they want damnit. You can't have TV/Movies without writers. They are a necessity in the biz.

Sylar don't need no icepick... his powers are back.

Being in superb physical shape does not make one superhuman. Superhuman is defined as having physical and/or mental characteristics that SURPASS human ability. Being built like a brick wall doesn't translate over.
Fail.

That's the thing. He is at such a weight and size, it is above human ability to carry that much weight that far in that amount of time.
Your definition of superhuman wouldn't allow any human to be superhuman. The second they accomplish the feat you could declare it is not beyond humans, one just did it.
-
The human population is currently producing children whose parents are to stupid to use a condom and to ugly for self esteem.
-
Although, Peter Petrelli and Sylar would both just be ordinary humans if there were no other humans with superhuman abilities.
Hmmm....

a thread sparked by an episode overdose of X-men Evolution has turned into a debate about Heroes?
good lordy.
-
They're all queers I'm afraid.
The mutation would have to lead to whatever mechanism within the laws of physics that would enable the ability.

You're not alone. Another good power- the ability to change probabilities.

I actually joined this site when someone linked it from the heroes forum. I still post there, in fact.
-
Mental note: prod admin for installation of a rofl smilie.
Heroes are mutant humans anyway, so I guess it's relevant.
You all fail in taking the topic way of topic!
-
They aren't mutants!!! Well...I guess...kinda...yeah.
-
They are, technically. Their dna is different.

There's a heroes forum? Where, where, for the love of God where??
