Title: I'm new too...so what about 24-hour days in Icewall?
Post by: Raylen on November 02, 2007, 10:53:38 AM
Ok so topic, I'm new. I was hanging around reading threads for 3 weeks though. Then I came up with an idea that I bet at least 3 other people have come up with before, so heartfelt apologies, but:

If I stand at a point on Antarctica, due south of Australia, in the summertime, it will be sunny both in Aussie and where I am. However, 12 hours later, it will be sunny in South Africa, dark in Aussie...but still be shining on me. Far as I can tell that would disprove various things. Or does it just get filed under C for conspiracy?

I have another semi-related question but I have noticed that certain people get distracted by such things. So it can wait.

Thanks :)

Our most reliable source of BS would tell you that the notion of a 24-hour day/24-hour night only exists in the arctic, the antarctic one is part of the big all-powerful conspiracy.

I'm going to have to call utter bullshit on this theory of yours because it's just speculation on what should happen based on a round Earth model.

Well, not the source of BS I was expecting, but just as reliable.

I'm not bullshitting anything here, I'm just calling him on his claims, and viably rightly at that.

I was referring to our good friend TB, not you specificly. However the FE objection was predictable.

you can go ahead and stand in Antarctica on 21st December, and trust me, you'll get 24 hours of light.

Seriously, if you don't believe me, do it.

According to some FEers here the sun acts as a constricted spotlight, not an ambient all directional light source.

According to other(s) it's a sphere. Stupid really. The simplest explanation to the OP is that the notion of 24-hour day/night doesn;t actually exist in the antarctic and it has been made up by the big ominous conspiracy of evil.

Yeah, I know. But let's just suspend reality for second and assume that you really can go there and see 24 hours of sunlight. What then?

PS. I know you're not RE. Just would like an answer other than "prove it" from a FEer. Diego.

Really, and what led you to these conclusions, Sherlock?

Quite simply, if there really are 24 hours of daylight at the south pole (which there are), then the whole of FE falls quite magnificantly down the toilet, the same as if many other observations are true, and not caused by wonderous and magical optical illusions.

Ask a predictable question, get a predictable answer. You can't really call bullshit on my calling bullshit.

I'm not sure what you mean. Anyone can go to Antarctica if they're willing to.

I think he means that, in the hypothetical situation where you went to the antarctic and witnessed 24 hours of daylight, how would FE twist and contort to explain it?

that's what i'm talkin' about.  these people need to actually go out and experience some things.  i'm starting to feel like flat earthers are hermits that have been holed up in houses in small towns.  they need to travel a bit... visit antarctia on the 21st of december like you suggested... or go to alaska a couple days before, stay during, and a couple days after the summer and winter soltices... (http://www.alaska.com/about/weather/story/4481284p-4773632c.html)... hell, if i was rich, i'd find the president of this so called flat earth society, and i'd pay to put him up in a space shuttle.  we'd see who was talking about the earth being flat after that.

I'll should be there this December 21, and I will report my findings.

Really? You'll should be there? Oh, but you can't because the government controls icewall and you'll will be killed.

I'm starting to feel like the education systems of various countries are terrible. Evidenced by the above post.

one of my classmates from my course at university is in Antarctica right now. I'm gonna get him to do a live video feed of the sun through the solstice. Since it never sets, you see.

Your friend will fail in his task because the sun DOES set on the coast of Antarctica.

yes indeedy, but he's not on the coast, is he. He's hundreds of miles inland from the coast.

You will fail, TB, because you are a one-man failing machine with a maximum of 3,000FPS.

The midnight Sun is only known to occur in the Northern hemiplane. There is, of course, an area of Antarctica which receives very little light, and one which receives none at all, all year round - at the very base of the Ice Wall itself. Beyond a certain point, the Sun's light does not perceptably shine at all, pre-Ice-Wall.
