Not being you would make a good start.

Why do you guys all gang up on me and tear me down? Using this place is now feeling like being in high-school all over again.
You are not destined for the Modhood, my son. The Lord has spoken to us by making you write this pathetic reply containing a plea for sympathy.

My Raspberry Pi running Debian (wheezy).  The Web Browser is Midori.

BTW my previous desktop post was of the same R-Pi running RiscOS, a legendory OS born in the 80s, specifically for RISC type computers

SONIC BOOM!

This is the correct answer also.

Also, if it makes it any easier, it was once explained to me as a cone-shaped wave that follows the aircraft and intersects with the ground (like a boat's bow wave in 3D).  Someone on the ground feels the cone passing as a boom or loud crack, just as a bow wave breaks on the river bank with a splash.

Oh wow
That's fine, but thousands/millions of other potential FES members also sit on their sofas using iPads with Retina displays. It may not be ideal, but it's the reality.

Have you tried not horrendously upscaling all the images on the screen?
I don't think you can control that in iPad/Safari. (Or I don't know how).

Some of the newer 'star' images are not appearing either. I think that's something that Daniel needs to sort out, rather than Tintagel.

This is how it looks on an iPad running Safari.

The only minor issue apart from the missing images is the banner text "The Flat Earth Society" running into the status text.  Lots of people use iPads (like it or not), so I think this is worth addressing at some point.

Incorrect.  When you make it smaller, you decrease the amount of energy used allowing you to achieve higher clock speeds at lower temps  (aka, making your chip smaller allows you to make it faster).  Also, Ivy bridge has about .2 billion more transistors than sandy bridge does when you compare core to core numbers.  That is proof that they are trying to increase performance by sticking more transistors on an even smaller die.

I didn't say they weren't trying. The problem is that a physical limitation in clock speed has been hit. It used to be that computer chips were getting twice as fast every 18 months, but for the last 10 years the speed of computers has flat-lined.

This is true. I have a HP Pavilion i5 which runs at 2.8GHz. Prior to that I had 2003 Dell with a Pentium running at... 2.8GHz.

Thankfully the HP appears to be about 8 times as "fast". I know this because I've done timings with Mame running games unthrottled.  This is only a rough measure of processing speed, I know.

Tom, with the greatest respect, please educate yourself on Moore's Law.

Moore's Law does not hold any more. CPU's hit a brick wall a long time ago. They stopped putting in more and increasingly smaller transistors on a chip to make it faster. The subtext of Moore's law was that computational power would increase on a single computer chip, and that transistor density would keep shrinking and that computers would continue getting faster. But in the face of a brick wall and in fear of fewer sales the computer industry was forced to resort to tying multiple chips together in the form of dual and quad core processors and convincing customers that it was 2 or 4 times as good. But this is akin to thinking that two people would have twice the IQ of one person. Multi-tasking by running Quicken on one cpu and running a web browser on the other doesn't make the operations performed in those programs any faster.

Multiple CPUs soldered together isn't progress. Now, instead of a computer four times as powerful as a computer from 2004, we merely have four 2004 computers.

See: The Death of CPU Scaling and Why CPU's Aren't Getting Any Faster

Can you please point where in either of those two articles it mentions that transistors have stopped getting smaller?

Increasingly smaller transistors is progress. It's why we're communicating over the interweb on equivalents of Cray supercomputers from the 80s.

Hi Tom

...quantum computing is an absurd science-fiction fantasy on a par with time travel.
I'm not aware of any time machine prototypes ever being built, unlike quantum computers.

We've already seen Moore's Law to be a failure. CPUs are no longer doubling in speed every six months due to the limitations of physics.
Tom, with the greatest respect, please educate yourself on Moore's Law.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: Solar energy
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:02:29 AM »
Sure, density is a big factor. That's why I ask what the sun is made of.

If ALL the energy emitted by the sun reached the earth's surface, at 22.587 g/cm3 (density of Osmium) the sun would last for approximately 44.5 billion years.

Can't have Osmium I'm afraid.

Emission spectra of the sun shows that it's convective photosphere 74.9% Hydrogen, 23.8% Helium.

So not only is the density & therefore the mass many orders of magnitude lowere than the extremely generous figure you have allowed the FE'ers, but they now need to explain what is holding this ball of light gas together.

You have said that the "photosphere" is made of hydrogen and helium.

You then presume that the sun is a "Ball of light gas". You have therefore made a huge assumption about the composition of the whole sun, based on the surface emission.  You cannot see the sun's interior, but you know believe it is the same material, based on an observation of its surface.

If ALL the energy emitted by the sun reached the earth's surface, at 22.587 g/cm3 (density of Osmium) the sun would last for approximately 44.5 billion years. I calculated that the cone of sunlight hitting the earth is about 120 degrees. This is a fraction of the whole sphere of energy emitted by the sun. Then take into account the amount of energy absorbed by the atmosphere and reflected by the earth (atmosphere and ground). In other words, a small fraction of the sun's emitted energy reaches the earth's surface. The earth is 4.5 billion years old and going strong. Let's say 10% of the sun's total emitted energy reaches the surface and the sun's average density is that of Osmium. Then the sun should have depleted half a billion years ago.

Luckily for us it hasn't.  Thankfully, the sun has obviously made a mistake in its calculations.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: Solar energy
« on: December 13, 2012, 04:55:22 AM »
While I'm at the questions, how does the sun provide as much energy as it does, yet it is only 32 miles in diameter? The sun consists of 70 276 km3 of __________________?

FET does not attempt to say, which is a perfectly reasonable standpoint. Do you know how dense the sun is?  What the core is made of?  Your question needs to include these factors, because volume is not the "decider".  Then you will need to find the answer.

Flat Earth Q&A / Re: Moon phases and eclipse
« on: December 12, 2012, 02:36:34 PM »
I understand you have a "spotlight" explanation for the moon but what about moon phases?  How does this work with your spotlight?

The "spotlight" is only a description of how the sun illuminates the flat earth below and does not imply that the sun is fitted with a lampshade.  The sun is able to illuminate the moon on both RE and FE models.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Re: antidepressants
« on: December 08, 2012, 12:42:35 PM »
I think that sometimes these medicines can help people, people who have natural imbalances.  I would always try therapy first of course, or in conjunction with therapy, but they have their place.

I think that the main issue is that they are used to widely to help people sustain problems that they should fix rather than dull.  Is a marriage making you unhappy, here, this will make it more bearable.  Is your business failing, here, this will help get you to work every day.  In reality you should either fix the marriage or leave it, and you need to find a job that does not make you depressed all the time.  Sometimes, these drugs can make your miserable life just bearable, without treating the factors contributing to your depression.

This is true.  They can be used to create a stop gap to allow a person to have the energy and motivation to sort their life out.  However in other cases I think people are just born with a chemical imbalance and will always be susceptible.  For them, long term drug therapy is a reasonable option in my opinion, verses self-medication and worse.

The Lounge / Re: "Suicide" yeah right.
« on: December 08, 2012, 10:12:00 AM »
I don't understand this at all. She committed suicide because she was prank called?
She was likely told she would lose her job. The hospital were shitting bricks and probably vented their anger and blame at her. Usually sacrificial lambs are made when an organisation f's up.

Much as I hate to agree with Thork, he's right. The hospital bosses will undoubtedly have told her she will lose her job and probably face prosecution under health record confidentiality laws. That could result in her being struck off the register and unable to practice her profession elsewhere, and I believe it may also carry a possible prison sentence. On top of feeling like an idiot for being fooled, it's most likely to be that which pushed her over the edge.

My understanding of this is that there was no confidentiality issue: The nurse in question only "put through" the call to a nurse on the royal future milf's ward.  See http://news.sky.com/story/1022636/kate-prank-call-hospital-slams-radio-station

BTW I've been away for some time and there seems to be lots of "Flat Earth Curators" around now.  I need to lurk a bit moore.

The Lounge / Re: How dependable are lasers?
« on: November 22, 2012, 11:41:50 AM »
Only 1mW, unfortunately. The most powerful you can buy legally. 532nm wavelength.

Why is your legal limit so low?

I think it was because there was a spate of kids bringing them into schools and doing mischief to teachers and other students a few years ago.

Also, I am suspect that it actually isn't just 1mW since it's also listed as a classIIIb laser, which (according to the fountain of all knowledge) range from5-500mW. It's definitely a low-powered one though since the beam is just about visible in bright light. (Clearly visible if I spray some aerosol around first.)
I think I could have the same one as you Chris, from Amazon(?).  Yes, I was a little curious as to why it says class IIIb when it's only 1 mW.  Is seems pretty bright for 1mW but that could just be because its green, and also I've got nothing to compare it to.

Apart from that it's what I expected.  Really good at night, at lease 800 meters (off a building near my house).
