Ok, so I want a small tablet so I can read e-mails and the internet etc without sitting at my desk. Also want to be able to watch movies and maybe play the occasional terrible game like chess or cards.
Now I was waiting for the Retina iPad mini to come out. However ... Apple have released upon the earth iOS7. I hate that OS like no other. Its on my iPhone, I can't get it off and it has turned my phone into a psychedelic kid's toy. Its also buggy and keeps crashing my apps. I hate it so much, that I won't be buying an iPad mini after all. Well done Apple, you useless shitbags.
I'm not really locked into Apple as my phone is a work phone, so I can choose to sell my soul to any vendor and get locked into their particular flavour of electronic evil.
Now, I'd love to make an ethical purchase (maybe based on privacy, tax compliance or even litigious prudence), but being as the front runners in this market are Apple, Google, Samsung, Amazon and Microsoft, I'm on a hiding to nothing and will have to give my hard earned wonga to one of the most odious companies on earth. So which ar*eholes to choose?
Below is my thinking, but as always its a thread to let you guys try sway my decision, especially if you own or have used said devices.
We'll start with the
iPad mini 2.As mentioned I didn't get the first one as I was holding off waiting for a retina screen. Yeah, they have the most apps, but quantity isn't a measure of quality. There is so much terrible crap in the app store.

I'd made up my mind and know iOS like the back of my hand, but its so ugly and I hate Jony Ive so very much, that Apple can do one. Also its gonna be expensive compared to the others and I'm not sure its worth it.
Estimated cost: £300Microsoft Surface MiniI'll knock this one out of the park quickly too.

The OS is almost as ugly as Apple's new offering. Its neither a laptop nor a tablet. Its heavy to hold for extended periods whilst reading, it doesn't have the x86 processor of its big brother, their app store is nothing to write about and it has been priced by people who don't understand money. Rumour also has it that they might miss the xmas sales and release it in early 2014. MS are a bloody mess right now. I don't want this.
Estimated cost: Over £450Nexus 7Ok, so now we are into the serious contenders. Its relatively cheap, They are fast (I used a Nexus 10 and its like greased lightning compared to an iPad), does everything I want.

Well priced, tons of apps, works well. Just, well ... I don't love it. I know its cheap but it kind of feels like it too. I find their take on android a little fussy and things are small and finicky. Maybe I'm just so used to iOS6, but I want something that feels that nice.
Estimated Cost: £150Kindle Fire HDX 7"Now, you may be thinking "why have you added this?", but I've added it because it makes a pretty convincing case. Ok, hear me out.

First up, they've used some seriously good components. The Nexus 7 above has a 1.5Ghz processor from Qualcomm. This new Kindle has the new Qualcomm snapdragon quad-core 2.2 Ghz processor in it. Its got a 1900x1080 screen like the nexus (retina quality), it has dual speakers unlike the others, faster wifi, 2Gb of Ram like the Nexus, 16Gb-64Gb of hard drive space. Its as good as anything else from a hardware perspective. Amazon really want people to buy them. They are shipping them at cost in the hope you then buy into their particular environment. And again, for me, that kinda makes sense. They have Amazon Prime which is 500,000 books, they own Lovefilm so I can subscribe to movies and they have a reasonable app store now. My mum owns the older one and I was stunned by just how good it is. If I have to be locked into anyone's store, theirs is the most useful.
I know the kindle is for pensioners with poor eyesight, but unless I see some pretty convincing counter-arguments from you guys, I think that's going to be the one.
Estimated cost: £150 (£160 without adverts) - I'd be getting the without ads version (obviously).
If there is something out there I have not thought of, feel free to suggest that too.
