Is there a way to unwatch a thread?
« on: June 30, 2018, 05:19:46 AM »
Is there a way to unwatch a thread so it no longer shows up when I select "New Replies"?

Thanks.

If you can't trust yourself to not click a topic, click the box at the far right. Then click 'Mark as Read'.

You can delete your posts in whatever thread you don't want to show up in Unread Replies.

Thanks.

I use the "New Replies" button to see threads I've posted in with new replies. As a very new member here, there are not very many of those. But over the course of time I post in a lot of threads, and after a while I drop out of some of them. I don't want to delete all my old posts, but no longer care to have them listed as threads with new replies.

Other discussion boards have a button to "Unwatch Thread" for just such times.

Fascinating. What else do other discussion boards have?

I've never actually watched a thread before so I'm not totally sure how to unwatched it.

If deleting your posts is the only way and you'd rather not lose them then PM a link to the posts and we'll split them off.

There's got to be another way though.

Sometimes people can learn from other people. Sometimes a discussion board can learn from other boards. Sometimes a car has such a good innovation that it turns up in other cars. (Anti-lock brakes, air bags, shoulder straps, etc.)

I think an Unwatch button would be an improvement, so I suggested it. Your comment seems to dismiss the idea on the grounds that nothing anybody else does can possibly be worthwhile.

I've had that problem too and made a post here.
Incompetent forum leadership is the reason we still do not have that feature.

Seriously, if you don't want to read a thread, don't click on it.

it's really annoying if threads I don't want to read show up under new threads all the time.

... click 'Mark as Read'.

Clicking on Mark As Read takes you from the thread back to the topic list, but it still shows up the next time I click on New Replies.

New Replies will always show you new posts in threads you have replied to. It's a feature, not a bug. You can turn subscriptions on/off for threads you are interested in (but not necessarily posted in), just like other online forums. Maybe that is the feature you want to try?

Actually, the impossiblity to turn subscription off in a thread you have posted is clearly a lack of a feature. Every other forum I am/was active in had that feature. But those weren't forums programmed in one guy's basement, sooo...

I'm sorry the concept of "New Replies" is lost on you.

If you want notifications that you can turn in/off about certain threads, regardless of whether you have posted in that thread or not, I posted how to do just that.

"New Replies" does exactly what it should do.

So I get an email everytime someone makes a post? That's pathetic and you know it.

No, it doesn't.

And seriously, I know you're a mod and all. But that doesn't mean you have to shut down all your logical thinking abilites and crawl into davids ass. You can still have your own opinion, even if the opinion includes accepting flaws of this forum.

Subscriptions would be nice. I can't make that change. Not only that, but it would be a different functionality than New Replies. New Replies should show updates to threads you have replied to. It is right there in the name. That's its only job.

Since I can't add forum features, I offered a workaround. No need to be a hostile just because that doesn't satisfy you. Jeez.

In case the administration decides to go ahead with this, our implementation of a similar feature may prove to be of assistance:

https://github.com/TheFlatEarthSociety/forum.tfes.org/commit/d968e71b5550994d812751e3d26ee60be31c0938
https://github.com/TheFlatEarthSociety/forum.tfes.org/commit/6ddb4e519572f23b40c4cb0d9e7a723a4c0ddb72

Naturally not an instant fix since our setups are somewhat different, but it might at least be a suitable example

Your solution doesn't pass our quality standards. Thank you though, it is helpful if we decide to implement similar functionality.

You can delete your posts in whatever thread you don't want to show up in Unread Replies.

I'm tired of 'The Number Game' showing up in my 'new replies'. If I go and delete all my posts made there I wont be bothered by it anymore?

Wont that fudge the numbering order?
