Title: RESOLVED: Broken Images on Different Languages
Post by: Raiku on January 27, 2010, 07:23:54 PM
At least it's made me memorize which button is which:

Many of the forum images of this type (except for the options image) are broken, at least on my browser.  They weren't a week ago.  Anyone else experiencing this?

It is fine for me. You should use firefox.

I think that most of the broken image links are in CN which uses a different theme than the rest of the fora.

When I goto the URL of the reply image, (http://theflatearthsociety.org/forum/Themes/SoftMC_Blue/images/english_british-utf8/reply.gif (http://theflatearthsociety.org/forum/Themes/SoftMC_Blue/images/english_british-utf8/reply.gif))

I get a 404:

Code: [Select]

The requested URL /forum/Themes/SoftMC_Blue/images/english_british-utf8/reply.gif was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I've had the same problem for months, and have bitched about it as well, but nothing has been done about it.  Not a big deal though because Firefox uses the alt text as it's intended unlike other browsers (apparently) so there's no memorization required.

Wait, so there is actually supposed to be pictures for those buttons in CN? I had no idea.

LOL.  Btw, what happened on August 30th that I should nevar forget?  I can't even forget things if I have never heard of them.

FES was hacked and we lost everything.  Except there was a backup from the host that was recent, which ended up only losing a few hours worth of posts.  Still, we should never forget.

@Raiku: I don't think it was ever discovered who did it.  It was last year, 2009.

I LOVE YOU!  Not really.  But thanks so much helping me get the images to work!  There's three English options, and two have the same name...  Very confusing.

You would wait another hour and a half for me to see this thread, only to find that Tom beat me to it.

Also, use Firefox. Even if the images don't work, it displays the alternate text as a link and not just a blank image.

Firefox is a browser. It does not work in a browser. It will always use alt text on any site that isn't loading an image for you.

That post confused me. I was like, "Firefox is always Firefox, so that will always work."

False, because that's the theme I had before and I had already tried switching between themes before.  The problem was there weren't any images tied to the "English UTF8" namespace.  I have no idea how or why my board language got changed, but that was most certainly the problem.

Not false, it's working fine for me. No "fix" or whatnot. Had the issue, switched themes, and all was well.

Regardless, that did not fix the problem for myself, and Raiku either evidently.  Just because it worked for you doesn't not necessarily mean that is the only solution, nor that the problem that you had and what I've had for months was even the same thing.

It's probably a cache error or something but I'm far too lazy to try and fix it on my end.

Found it and fixed it.

Yet I can't help but scold the person responsible for maintaining this forum.  Not only is that an easy to fix error but there are 3 "English".  English, English, British English.  I run 3 SM forums and this kind of error is inexcusable.

Idiot.

There is a solution to the problem but it has not been fixed. One should not have to "lurk" to fix it because it should not happen. The images should work on the default language, or the default language should be the one where the images work.

These are my suggestions and concerns.
Title: Re: dead images
Post by: Lorddave on April 15, 2010, 03:42:09 PM
To fix it is pretty easy.

First, delete that other English language folder/setting.  It's only confusing.
Second, take the files from the English and copy it over to the British English.  Make sure the names on the language list is the same as the file name (I suspect it is).

Done.

@Parsifal: The issue is that whilst using "British English" as your language, images are broken. Said solution does not exist to fix problem, only to cause another issue, that being the use of a language that I am not proficient in.

Both Chrome and IE explorer have the missing buttons.
In addition IE has problems with the post reply as it always jump scrolls back to the beginning.
So to browse I use IE, and when I want to post I switch to Chrome.

It's no the browser.  Make sure you change your language settings in your profile to the "English" that is between Persian and Spanish in the list on your Account Related Settings page.  There are a couple "versions" of English in there and the others are broken for whatever reason.

While it wasn't easy to make that change and it took about 30 minutes to be effective, your suggestion did indeed clear the problem. Thanks.

That worked for me. Using Chrome. Now everything is ok.
Only took me 1 min though. Not 30 mins as suggested above. Maybe that should be the default when you set up your account? Mods?
