Cool. I thought the automatic transmission was a much newer invention.
Naaah, they've been quite popular on US cars since the early 50's. It's funny, one of my instructors at mechanic's school used to say that the worst two inventions in automotive history were the electric starter and the automatic transmission - because they both were designed specifically to encourage women to drive.
Just for the record that is not a pic of my car. But mine looks exactly the same. Same rims and all.
LOL. Yeah its got the original 302. Only rebuilt once. Original tranny. Does 17s in the quater lol.
That's how mine was when dad and I got started. Base V-8 with a 327 and a 2-speed powerglide. We initially rebuilt the original engine to around 350-375 horses, but I recently built a 414ci small block and dropped it in. 520 HP @ 5800, 560 lb-ft @ 2950 on motor, with a progressive 250 shot not yet installed. I can't wait. I've had nitrous on my 540 for about 3 months now, and love it.
Never get rid of the car - or the original motor. Mine's on an engine stand, even though there's nothing special about it except that the numbers match the car's.
