Philosophy, Religion & Society / Number that cannot be written
« on: January 31, 2008, 04:01:27 PM »
I dont know if im gonna do this one justice or not, but its an interesting paradox. Im saying its philosophy because it sure aint any of the others.

Ok, so. You take every number between 0 and 1 (an infinite ammount)
You the lengthen them to an infinite length by adding 0s on the end
so 0.1 becomes 0.1000000000000000(etc)
then, you take the first digit of the first number, and the second digit of the second number, and the nth digit of the nth number and so on. and you call that number X
then you take number X, and write it out again, but you add 1 to all of the digits (9 looping round to 0). call this number Y
This number has to be different to all the other numbers in the list, as X contained one digit from every digit in the list and number Y has every digit different to the one in number X.

Hense, we have not written number Y in the list, even though it contains every number between 0 and 1.

« on: January 31, 2008, 03:16:59 PM »
Is it just me who can't shake the idea that its pronounced row-bot-ham? like "robot ham"

Seriously, id prefer a theory that comes from a mechanised pig. it would know what it was talking about.

The Lounge / Starcraft 2
« on: January 31, 2008, 09:45:01 AM »
This thread is bound to have been made before, if it has been, consider this a bump

Is it going to be as good as the original?
What is the plot going to develop?
Your thoughts?

Now, I personally loved the original more than I could ever love a person, so i'll be getting the new one because blizzard deserves my money anyway. But it does actually look to be a very decent game in its own right.

Zerg FTW (kekek)

The Lounge / Best City
« on: January 23, 2007, 02:46:22 PM »
OK, this thread is for a discussion on what you all think the greatest city in the world is. This is not a "the best county in the world's capitol" discussion, the city needs to be a cool city in itself.

Im gonna start it off with : London
For a start, London is the most populous city in the EU, with 7.5 million inhabitents. Its a multicultural paradise, so much so that it has earned the nickname "Londistan". 27% of all London-dwellers are non-British . London has created its own ethnic groups, Cockneys being an example, complete with their own dialects and customs. It has many great landmarks, The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Westminstor Abbey for example. It is also creating new landmarks for the future, the London Eye being one of these.
London has been important for over 2000 years, being a centre of administration under the Romans (although it was named "Londinium")
London is also now officially the financial capitol of the world, generating £219 billion pounds a year (the london metropolitan area generates 345 billion -- according to wikipedia) . This means it has outstripped New York in terms of economy.
New money is constatly poured into the City, shown in its regeneration of the Docklands area, which came from being a lower-class slum to being a highly sought after buisness district in less than 20 years.
London is also famous for its intricate tube system, one of the first of its kind.
London is build on a "when-needed" basis, which gives it a labyinthine feeling that allows many people to lose themselves wandering around its streets.
This is why I feel that London is the greatest city in the world. Any other opinions would be great.
Im thinking in a while we could have a vote, but i dont want to add a poll cause i dont know what cities will be nominated.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Assumptions
« on: January 08, 2007, 01:09:28 PM »
This is a fairly weak pro-religion argument, i know, but i wanna throw it out into the open anyway.

One of the common complaints against religion is that people say it requires accepting something without evidence, or that any evidence is self-justifying and therefore useless.

But

The whole basis of science is based on an assumption. There is no proof that the universe exists, other than the fact that it justifies itself. We can see it, but sight is a property caused by the universe.
Scientists use this assumption to base all other theories off.

In the same way, religion takes the base assumption that God exists, and uses that to prove other things. The universe can exist because it is within Gods power to make it happen.

An assumption is at the bottom of both science and religion.

The Lounge / Positive Discrimination
« on: January 04, 2007, 04:24:58 PM »
IS it right to force companies to hire X% of their staff from Y ethnic minority. Should minorites (and women) be given extra measures to prevnt discrimination, or should they be truly equal and left to be potentially discriminated against?

Personally, i am againt positive discrimination.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Mind Control
« on: December 20, 2006, 03:09:27 PM »
Looking back at projects like MK Ultra and the regiems in Japan, mind control seems to be a recurring aim for governments.
I'm wondering to what extent it could feasibly exist, and if it does exist, to what extent is it being used.

The Lounge / Victimless Crimes
« on: December 07, 2006, 09:37:48 AM »
There are a number of crimes that can be committed without anyone being hurt.
A couple examples of these being: Stealing Wireless internet from a neighbour (assuming they dont need the bandwidth)
Illegally downloading songs off the internet (assuming you wouldnt have bought them)
WHat's everyone's opinion on these types of crimes?

www.timecube.com

Aparently there is a theory that Time is "cubic" and that we have all been brainwashed by people in Education.

You might want to read his rant on the above link, it contains such pearls of wisdom as
Quote from: "TimeCube.com"
If I tell a human that his 4-corner
head (nose, 2 ears and back corner)
has only a 1-corner face, the dumb-
ass will say to me - "prove it". He
knows not that his face is a corner.

Flat Earth Q&A / Formation of Earth
« on: November 19, 2006, 02:21:54 PM »
A lot of people are making arguments about how the Earth had to be formed as a sphere because of the Interstellar Nursery and giant Gas coulds and the like. That cannot be true.
When the big bang happened, all of the matter would have been propelled outwards, spinning all the time. This would generate a vast Centrifugal force, which would have propelled the heavier bodies on top of the Earth to its outsides. Things like.....Ice.
As a side effect, all the ice carving its way to the edge of the Earth would have destroyed natural formations in its way, effectively flattening the Earth in the same fasion as using sandpaper.
