By jove I've figured it out! I just realized that Tom is Simplicio and Gulliver is Salviati. Now the question is, who is Sagredo?  Hmmm…a mystery to be sure… ::)

Flat Earth Q&A / Lunar Eclipse
« on: July 13, 2007, 02:45:46 PM »
I must have missed this in the “FAQ”. Actually, it seems SOP to imply that someone asks a dumb question due to NOT reading the FAQ, but, in fact the data is usually not covered there…but I digress.

As a new FE’r, I’m confused about the eclipse issue, especially the Lunar Eclipse. Can someone clarify this issue for me?

As a side note, I observed a ship dropping below the horizon one beautiful morning while visiting the west coast this past weekend…that sure was confusing… ::)

I was wondering: Where does the data in the FAQ for the diameter and circumference of the flat earth come from?

Around 300 BC a man named Eratosthenes measured the circumference of the earth using a stick and the shadow from the stick and some very simple geometry. Can you help me understand how his method was flawed and how the numbers posted in the FAQ where calculated?

I can provide the complete details for the Eratosthenes measurements if you like – didn’t want to use too much e-paper unless needed. Thanks.

This site has ruined my day. I planned on collimating my 12-inch Dobsonian telescope and preparing for a wonderful evening of stellar viewing, however, after reading the arguments for a flat earth, I lost my initiative…  :'(
