Title: Use Play Station 3 to get internet connection on computer.
Post by: Taters343 on July 15, 2010, 03:03:37 PM
The antenna for my PCI adapter is broken, does anyone know if it is possible to use my PS3 to connect to the internet with my computer instead of buying a new one?

The PS3 is not a router, and it does not have wireless, so no, you cannot use your PS3 to connect your computer to the internet.  Also, if you've kept your PS3 updated, then the OtherOS option has been disabled.

EDIT: I stand corrected, the PS3 has wireless.

What do you mean it doesn't have wireless?

You can do that with a computer, not sure about a PS3.

Ok. I Googled it but couldn't find anything. What would the technical term for doing this be?

Using your PS3 as a server?

The only way I could think that you could do this is if you had Linux installed on your PS3.

Answer this, cause I'm confused.

What do you mean it doesn't have wireless?

Also, I can tether my phone to my computer for an incredibly crap internet connection. It also heats my phones battery up to well over 113 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the kind of thing I want to do.

One of the menus has 'internet browser' as an option.

My stepbrother Luke tethers Internet from his phone (a droid as well, I believe) to his computer, so I'm sure if the PS3 has wireless you could tether with it as well.

I USB tether with my Droid. I was hoping that I would be able to somehow connect my PS3 to my computer and use the PS3's wifi.

Shouldn't it tether in the same way?

...No.

This is the first time I've ever heard the term "tether" be applied to internet connectivity.

The difference is that a phone connects directly to the internet and when you "tether" it, it acts as a modem.  The PS3 has to connect to a modem or a router in order to get its internet access and cannot facilitate a connection unto itself.

Also, I'm slightly tipsy so if that doesn't make sense, sorry.

The answer is no. The PS3 is not nor can become a WAP.

You have three choices:
1. buy a new antenna. Probably costs $5.
2. Buy a new wireless card.
3. Connect your computer up with a physical LAN cable.

You forgot 4. Don't use the internet.
